Rayfer -> Auto Sub Op's on (1/13/2016 6:57:04 PM)

Started a campaign as the USA with the Auto Sub Op's option on. Seems to be working except for when I went into Manila and saw nearly 20 subs just sitting there doing nothing. Now I realize I'm only on the Dec. 9th, 1941 turn so maybe they just haven't reacted yet. Have I missed something here or is this normal? Thanks, Ray

Auto subs On is not....optimal [:(]

Where control can act submarines and so achieve inflict more damage it is vital.

as was said auto ops for you is suboptimal (oww)

the AI will eventually deploy your subs but not in any any real functionality. sending subs to patrol the west coast sounds good but not for the allies.
s boats patroling Dunadain NZ also not a help.

take joy in your first turn click fest 25 subs in Manila alone. with subs on computer control elsewhere.

search for the Argonaut and all of the pre fleet boat types. you don't want them on regular patrol.

your S boats have working torpedos. get an AS forward with a small AO disbanded and hurt the IJN.

As some have said the AI auto sub ops doesn't work well, for the most part they seem to be set to patrol in home waters rather than front lines unless your home waters are the front line or just sit in port altogether. I normally will do it the following way - I manually select/set up a tf (1 sub early in game but later in game 3-5 subs) then use the patrol area & click on the area I want to patrol in & let the AI set the waypoints automatically & if I don't see attacks happening in the following turns I then will redo in another area until it's time to refuel where it then will start to function correctly of patrolling hot areas & going home to refuel etc. somewhat laborious but I've never had more than a dozen or so sub tf going at one time.

Early game Allied subs ideal areas are around the northern Phillippines & Taiwan area as many IJN ships moving through that bottleneck so you can have 4-5 subs on patrol easily doing much work w/ rest being repaired at Manila or rebasing to somewhere N Oz or DEI w/ an AS/AO w/ the soon to be eventual loss of the PI & Manila. The S boats & Dutch subs are your early Allied strike force to bloody the IJN nose as much as possible.

The specific reason why here the subs remain in port is that a Task Force will not enter a known minefield. Under human control, a TF will transit a known minefield if that is the only available route to get to a human selected destination. Under computer control that limited override does not exist.

You will find your computer opponent laid a minefield at Bataan on 7 Dec 1941. You have to clear the minefield first before the computer controlled sub TFs sortie out of Manila. Due to their short range the S-class boats will then be given defensive patrols. Then depends whether the AI considers any defensive zones within range exist.
