Well, if Sealion had been succesfull, and the UK navy severly crippled in Atlantic, and Mexico and Cuba joined the Axis, maybe then a limited invasion could have been launched.

Yeah - and if that Chamberlain geezer had put the UK on a war ecomony in the late 30's built up a huge Empire Army and spent serious money developing sensible tanks with 75mm guns and wide tracks and increasing the navy - getting rid of all the WWI stuff (except a certain lady of course) and building great big %^&* off battleships and carriers (with proper aircraft to go with them) and convoy escorts - and an air force complete with a proper balanced force including tactical support for the army. If he'd done all that then maybe we could have kicked bottom.

Nice fantasy.

Read Maiolo's 'Cry Havoc' to understand the economics of why that was not possible.

Put simply, HM Government understood that the only way they could match Hitler's profligate arms spending in peacetime was by effectively becoming a fascist dictatorship themselves.

The French realised the same.

Heck, even Stalin figured out that he couldn't have guns and machine tools (let alone butter)!

I highly recommend the book, it has some important insights as to why decisions were made and what constraints limited the decisions that could realistically be chosen ... and puts paid to many popular 'alternatives' such as the one you suggest.

Fantasy? It was not meant as a sensible comment.
