Stimpak -> (Version 2) Polish Faction (2/1/2016 6:23:48 AM)

I've been hinting at this for awhile, and while it's been wracked with delays, I'm proud to release an early version of the Polish Forces for Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm.

One thing is noticeable about Poland right away in the game - and that's their unit organizations. Polish land doctrine was radically different to that practiced by other Warsaw pact nations, emphasizing fire and maneuver by company, with the emphasis for tactical innovation being placed on the shoulders of company and platoon commanders. Consequently the battalion normally operates as distinct Company MEs, unlike their Warsaw pact equivalents, which operate as a single, large ME. As a result of this, you'll often find Polish units divided into platoons rather than the large companies of the Soviets and East Germans. Likewise, their command structure also enjoys greater freedom - but not to the standards of NATO - than their fellows in the Warsaw Pact.

The background of this lays in the Polish October - A series of changes and reforms that marked the De-Stalinization and partial liberalization of the Polish People's Republic. A SOFA with the Soviet Union saw the Northern Group of Forces reduced to just two divisions, and a re-organization within the Polish military. Transitioned from a "Puppet state" to a "Client state" as the historian Norman Davies remarks, Poland defied typical Warsaw Pact structure and began forming Brigades in areas where there typically were Regiments, specifically in the artillery and engineers. Changes continued as Soviet influence waned and in 1989, Poland disbanded all Tank Regiments in their Mechanized Divisions and reformatted their Mechanized Regiments into a 2x Tank Bn, 2x Mech Bn structure, that are referred to in the OOB as Brigades, although Mechanized Brigades were not formed proper until 1993.
The Polish were typically dissatisfied with Soviet rule and continuously held protests, demonstrations, and reforms in defiance of Soviet rule. By 1989, Solidarity had gained significant power in Poland, and the first semi-free democratic elections were held just a month before the timeline of Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm. Many western analysts conclude at this time that, had the war turned against the Warsaw Pact and the Soviet union, Poland as a whole was very likely to switch sides to NATO. Even then, many predict wide rebellions and partisan movements which would have hampered Soviet logistics in the theater.

(Map in the background is an excellent remake by The Plodder. You'll be seeing more inspiration from his maps in my later works [;)])

Included in Version 1 are the basic Armoured and Mechanized formations of the Polish forces, covering 1979-1989. Also included are divisional and army level assets, all of which see use of equipment not in use by the Soviet union - these include the Czech OT64 SKOT and Dana SPG. The Polish counters are not final and I'll probably switch them out for a style that does not obscure counter information like the white colors do.

In Version 2 I will seek to include Air Assault regiments and the Polish Marines, a significant unit in Warsaw Pact operations north of Germany.

Like the East Germans, I'll seek to include new maps and scenarios alongside the Polish factions, but not a whole campaign.

Version 1 is attached to this post. Scroll down to find Version 2, attached to another post.

Feel free to report any bugs and errors!

Polish Mechanized forces advance against German reservists...

Version 2 is partially done and just needs some review/testing.

Hi Stimpack,

great job.

Wrt the unit icons, by taking some artistic freedom, readability can be improved by either:
- shifting the red bar downwards, so the black text stay on white. This, however, still leaves the problem with the pips (center top) being hard to read.
- alternatively, use a shifted Polish checkerboard so there is a red background for the pips.

See below.

New map: Jever-Wilhelmshaven

http://puu.sh/mYet7/4586aa2875.zip

Special thanks to The Plodder for heavy inspiration. This map is in no way meant to "rip off" his style and is merely my interpretation of an art style that I found superior to the one I was using on my previous maps (CEG 1-4).

The map contains both Jever and Wilhelmshaven. Jever for it's brewhou- err, Airbase, operating F-4 Phantoms and Tornado multirole fighter-bombers. Also on the map is Wilhelmshaven, the largest naval base (And only deep water port) in West Germany. From there operated the Deutsche Marine's relatively smaller navy, with it's biggest ships, the 8 Bremen-class frigates being relegated to a convoy escort role rather than combating the Warsaw Pact Baltic fleets, a task reserved for submarines. Both Jever and Wilhelmshaven are highly valuable strategic targets that would likely have been hit by massive airstrikes/chemical/nuclear attacks.

Jever should be the first of an (un)planned series of maps occurring in Lower Saxony.

"Rip off" from my style as much as you want.[:D] Very nice work on the map.[&o]

baldbrother -> Polish and other added factions. (2/9/2016 1:00:31 AM)

Great work with these. Where can they be used? Will you be writing some scenarios? Thanks in adavance.

Stimpak -> RE: Polish and other added factions. (2/9/2016 1:53:06 AM)

Currently I do not have any scenarios written up for either the Netherlands or Polish factions. East Germany has a full but untested campaign, however. These factions can be selected in the scenario editor so that you may create your own scenarios with them, to access the factions you simply have to set one side to them in the "Set Key Scenario Parameters" here:
[image]http://puu.sh/n139z/101135d839.jpg[/image]

Once the faction has been installed (By extracting it's folder into the drive:/Flashpoint Campaigns Red Storm/Modules/FPRS/Data folder), they should appear on the list.

Jever, as a map, contians strategically important locations, but itself is not under the jurisdiction of any local NATO units. Any battle that did happen here would have to be between "second echelon" forces like POMCUS units, and the Polish Front. If I wanted to do any further battles, then in turn I'd have to create additional battlefields [;)]
I have been brainstorming ideas for where the FPRS story would go after the (what I assume are intentionally ambiguous) events of Thor's Hammer; the general idea I've come up with is a last-ditch attempt by NATO to prevent the total collapse of NORTHAG: A counter-attack by recently-arrived III US Corps and I NL Corps against the now-exhausted WGSF.

Other ideas/conclusions:
-3rd Brigade, 2nd Armor is destroyed in the Battle of Bremen, but not before taking the 47th GTD with it
-A spent 9. Panzerdivision (NVA) meets it's fate at the hands of the 5th Infantry Division, leaving the 8. MSD the only active East German unit in NORTHAG
-If Thor's Hammer ended conventionally, the remaining fighting is conventional and Nordhorn is either a staging point for the NATO counterattack, or a Pact stronghold for the I NL Corps to push back out
-If Thor's Hammer ended nuclear, remaining fighting sees liberal use of NBC weaponry and story briefings hint at rapid escalation

Back when I was doing the East German campaign, I contemplated adding a "News Ticker" section to the briefings that simply told the story of what was happening elsewhere; ie. Soviet progress in other sectors, victories and defeats in the Atlantic, spill-over in the Koreas and other client states...

Mad Russian -> RE: Polish and other added factions. (2/11/2016 1:38:57 AM)

Very nice looking!!

Good Hunting.

Stimpak -> RE: Polish and other added factions. (2/11/2016 2:21:00 AM)

Thanks for all the kind words.

MR, you did most of the scenarios. Any ideas on where the "story" would have gone after TH? Or is it a "To be continued..." until Southern Storm?

Small errors with the .fp9 corrected.
