heyhellowhatsnew -> Any chance of this appearing on Steam? (2/26/2016 1:21:12 AM)

I was just wondering (and hoping) if this game was appearing on Steam anytime soon or if at all. I've always bought directly from Matrix/Slitherine and always will, but it would just be convienient to have all my games in one place.

Thanks! Crossing my fingers!

Sorry, not. This not that kind of game...

That's too bad. STEAM has what 20 million or so users? If just .01% (that's 1/100th of 1 percent) of them buy that's 2000 sales. Not knowing how the STEAM/Publisher relationship works its very possible that 2000 sales isn't enough to put something there. Then again I remember reading somewhere that around 1.5% of computer gamers are serious wargamers (gotta be a marketing site with that kind of demographic data) and if that is the case then you're looking at some seriously high potential sales numbers from STEAM.

The power of STEAM is the number of people who are gamers that a product gets in front of.

Tigers on the Hunt looks a HELL of a lot like the original Avalon Hill Squad Leader game. That would be a draw for many one would think.

Which begs the question: Was ASL the inspiration? Is it similar in ways other than the appearance and that it covers WWII?

Peter Fisla -> RE: Any chance of this appearing on Steam? (2/26/2016 2:15:26 AM)

Yes, ASL was the inspiration

heyhellowhatsnew -> RE: Any chance of this appearing on Steam? (2/26/2016 4:14:45 AM)

I understand :( Thanks

That's unfortunate. You sound almost disdainful.

As Werewolf1326 says, you will be losing out on a potentially huge revenue stream. There is no particular "kind" of Steam game. Steam is just a digital store and DRM platform. It's a means to get your product into the virtual hands of your customers.

If Gary Grigsby's War In The East is a Steam game (and it is) then so is Tigers On The Hunt. I hope you reconsider.

kylania -> RE: Any chance of this appearing on Steam? (2/26/2016 1:13:13 PM)

Another great benefit of steam is not having to worry about how to patch or add content. This day one patch and the the bonus scenarios would simply be part of the game instead of zip files that you have to explain to people how to find, extract and overwrite files with. Instead of having to worry about keeping track of the install files, and the key and the patch zips and all the mods and what order to install them, you'd just add Workshop support and players would subscribe and again, it would just all work. From a user perspective every game should be a Steam game.

FroBodine -> RE: Any chance of this appearing on Steam? (2/26/2016 1:48:05 PM)

Yeah, that comment put me off a bit, too. Steam sells ALL kinds of games, from the most grognard wargames to the lightest mobile games.

There is something for everyone there. Don't knock the almighty Steam cash cow.

Lagedor -> RE: Any chance of this appearing on Steam? (2/26/2016 2:43:26 PM)

A bit of a shame - I too tend to buy my games direct from Slitherine/Matrix, but have always taken advantage of using Slitherine's feature to redeem a Steam key for the games they also launch on Steam (which tends to be most of them nowadays).

It is good to have all my games available in one place for installations and upgrade - much more convenient than having to trawl sites for latest updates and patches and having to dig out old serial numbers for re-installations. Steam also acts as a backup repository for my games - I can be sure I won't lose installation media/ resources given some major catastrophe causing me lose my PC hard drive and/or local backups.

Tamas -> RE: Any chance of this appearing on Steam? (2/26/2016 2:53:05 PM)

If we decide to eventually release the game on Steam (there are several factors to consider), your Matrix serial key will make you eligible to get yourself a Steam copy of the game.

Also while I don't want to belittle the very convenient nature of Steam, let's not forget that our launchers have a check for updates feature which do the patch-hunting for you ;)

FroBodine -> RE: Any chance of this appearing on Steam? (2/26/2016 6:04:19 PM)

But, I thought this game didn't have the update feature yet, hence the issues some folks had unzipping and copying the patch into their game folder.

I rarely due this but:

The above says it all and is "quoted for truth"!

A long time ago in a Galaxy far far away I used to be a STEAM HATER. Not now and not for a very long time.

Why the change. Read the quoted post above and the reason becomes apparent.

I've got well over a 100 disc based games sitting on my desk next to me and it's equal bought on STEAM. The last game I bought on disc was Civ V when it came out. It was just a steam link. Man was I pissed off. I called the publisher support and raised major hell. No use of course so I reluctantly signed up for steam and got Civ 5. I've not bought a disc based game since.

Digital all the way: STEAM, Matrix, Amazon, Origin, Gog, Stardock and Gamespot all get my business. STEAM gets most of it and Matrix is 2nd. Given the option I'll go with STEAM every time - even over Matrix if it's available at both for the reasons stated in the quoted text.

FWIW I think the TOH devs should reconsider their decision.

Matrix's update feature is why they're #2 on my digital purchase list. The lack of mod management features is why Matrix isn't #1.

I'm getting too damned old to want to bother with managing mods, installing them, uninstalling if they don't work the way I wish them to - etc.

STEAM does all that for you.

philabos -> RE: Any chance of this appearing on Steam? (2/26/2016 11:07:53 PM)

I really get that Matrix wants to get the release high dollar sales. I just bought WITE in the sale from the Matrix site because I want to support them, although I wonder if Steam does not get their pound of flesh by issuing steam keys. They have to be making something on the deal.
You would think Matrix has certainly done the numbers based on their experience, but have to wonder if a potentially high selling game like this would not be better off on Steam from the get go. Get new release prices on a much wider sales potential without discounting.

It might not be a good idea to bring it out on Steam at the beginning...

Firstly, most steamers (sic [:D]) are used to big 90%-75% discounts, which this game will probably never get. Besides, it's realy a board game--again something most steamers won't appreciate. Perhaps they would if the game were $1.99 or somehting. But for the current price and the "simplicity" of its graphics, the game would get a thrashing on Steam, just like many Matrix/Slitherine games do. There seem to be lots of people there who hate Matrix/Slitherine...

I guess it might come out on Steam one day, just like GG's War in the East did, eventually. BTW, have you ever wondered why GG's War in the West isn't on Steam yet...?

are you talking about TotH or DCB?

Delaware -> RE: Any chance of this appearing on Steam? (4/15/2016 12:29:36 PM)

My understanding is WITW and DCB will arriving on Steam eventually.

To be honest, we like Steam because it's convenient to us, the end user. I have no idea what the particulars are financially between Steam and game publishers. I assume there has to be some drawback to the publisher, despite the huge potential audience.

Also, remember when WITE finally appeared on Steam? The reviews and comments were heavily negative because the target audience was outweighed by people who we looking for simpler games. For a small game trying to get started, those uninformed trolling type reviews can be crippling

Not sure that matters in this case though. I imagine there's more people that would buy the game from Steam instead of Matrix if available than wouldn't buy from Matrix at all based on Steam reviews from 12 year olds.

The assumption/rumour is that Valve's (Steam) cut is 30% of the price of the game. The exposure to a potentially huge customer base is worth it but Matrix would obviously be better off selling the game exclusively to begin with and then selling on Steam some months after the initial release.

I don't recall any negative reviews of WITE on Steam. You have to own the game there in order to review it and I'd imagine people would do their research on the game before buying it. There were some stupid comments in the game's discussion hub but they were quickly drowned out by comments supporting the game.

As an aside Decisive Campaigns Barbarossa will be released on Steam soon and I'm sure WITW will find it's way on to Steam eventually. Who knows, maybe even WITP:AE will also. [:)]

haley3 -> RE: Any chance of this appearing on Steam? (4/26/2016 8:00:57 PM)

I've just seen this thread. Had I seen it earlier I wouldn't have created mine. I'd also like a Steam version and I'd be happy to pay for it when it arrives.

For me the benefits are convenience, and not having to manage local files: I reinstall my Windows VMs quite frequently and I always get into trouble with DRM, downloads or registrations. (How big is this game? I do not have much local storage and the 30-day download limit on this forces me to save the installer). Steam is one of the few platforms that actually works for my lifestyle.
