Mini_Von -> Carrier Launch Order (3/2/2016 1:20:19 AM)

Hi Guys,

I'm looking for the most realistic aircraft launch and recovery order from a US carrier according to the mission. The order that I normally adhere to for a typical Strike Mission is as follows:

Launch Order
============
AEW
CAP
SEAD with Jammer support
Strike
Recon

Recovery Order
=============
SEAD
Strike
Recon
Jammer
AEW
CAP

I am especially curious about which aircraft should be launched first (AEW or CAP) and which should land last. Any comments or suggestions would be welcome.

I would think that, based on logic alone with no inside knowledge, you've got it about right!

I know from interactions with pilots and documentaries/clips that AEW is always first up and last back. I imagine tankers are next with everything else being situation dependent.

Thanks for the verification guys.

A quick look at "One Day in a Long War" has the tankers after the AEW and before the main strike force. The idea being, they circle the carrier for the strike force to formate on and then top up their tanks there and then before they depart on the mission.

It makes perfect sense, thank you for the insight.

In the Vietnam scenario Down town i had my Hawkeye AEW a/c airborne first and had them out on station about 30 or so nm from the carrier, then i created 2 Alpha strikes one to strike the bridges and the other to strike the railway yard. Didnt bother launching my tankers because all a/c wouldnt need refueling due to the strike radius they had. But for some reason i noticed a group of Skyhawks whilst on their way back from their strike were flying at low altitude and using a lot of fuel. 2 of them ran out of fuel and crashed about 20nm from the carrier....how i wished that i used those tankers. But no idea why they were flying so low, think it was something i did with their mission.

Both strikes on the targets used Mk82 LDGP. The bridges strike had 4 Corsairs and 4 Intruders with an 8 ship fighter escort, 3 ship DEAD, 2 ship recon and 1 ship EW. The other had 8 ship Skyhawks (in 2 pairs of 4) 4 Intruders with all the same escorts. Destroyed the targets but lost 17 a/c.

I read in an old magazine that in a 80s strike package, fighters where the last aircraft to be launched and the first to be recovered, because they had the lesser flight endurance, and the fastest cruise speed (in WW2 it was the same way).

But those were the F-14/A-6/A-7 days... nowadays, maybe a Super Hornet loaded with AG ordnance has the lesser endurance, compared with an AA armed F/A-18.

In any case, AEW would be first and last (more endurance and less transit speed) and tankers would be second to launch and second to last in the recovery.

This provides the parameters for strike planning. Launch sequences depend on a number of factors involving distances, loadouts, endurance, and time on target for the mission.
