Hungarian Manors

Obuda, Hungary, December 27, 1944: After the Soviet 2nd and 3rd Ukranian Fronts had encircled
Budapest on the 25th, the tempo of the fighting in Buda had increased. Both sides fed units
piecemeal into the battles developing in the hills surrounding Buda. Units of the 8th SS found
themselves engaged in a fierce, often hand to hand battle to prevent the Soviets from occupying
all of the strategic high ground North and West of Buda.

Game Length: 7 turns

For the Russians to win they must capture both buildings on the hilltops
For the Germans to win they must defend the high ground

Russians: Squads, HMG, MMG's, LMG's, FT, DC's, AFV's
Germans: Squads, HMG's, MMG's, LMG's, PSK, AT Gun, AFV's

Boards: #41

Aftermath: The Soviets stormed up hills, attempting to force the Germans from their defensive
positions, while Soviet and German tanks stalked each other in the narrow streets below. These
battles would go on for almost the entire seige. Only when the defenders ran out of ammunition
would they vacate their hilltop villas which, during the see-saw battles, had been reduced to
rubble heaps.

For those who have served on this Veteran's Day...

Aachen Redoubt

Aachen, Germany, October 14, 1944: "In the early stages of the American attack upon the
first German city to be reached by the Allied forces, two battalions of the 26th Infantry
Division were tasked to force their way into the city from the southeast. Two companies of
the 2nd Battalion, clearing the city block by block, met the strongpoint at St. Elizabeth's
Church, guarding the edge of Farwick Park and the Palace Hotel beyond that contained the
German headquarters. Augmented by the battalion's light and heavy machine-guns firing up the
streets, shelling usually drove the Germans into the cellars where the infantry stormed them
from behind a barrage of hand grenades. Whenever the enemy proved particularly tenacious, the
riflemen used other weapons at their disposal, including demolitions and flamethrowers. After
a few bitter experiences in which the Germans bypassed in cellars and storm sewers emerged in
the rear of the attackers, the riflemen soon learned that speed was less important than pertinacity."
(Excerpt from the book: 'The Seigfried Line Campaign' by Charles B. McDonald)

Game Length: 8 turns

For the Americans to win they must capture two buildings from the German defenders
For the Germans to win they must defend the building strongpoints

Americans: Squads, MMG's, FT's, DC's, BAZ's, ART Gun
Germans: Squads, HMG, MMG, LMG's

Boards: #1

Aftermath: Early on October 14th, when two companies combined to overrun the strongpoint at
St. Elizabeth's Church, the momentum of the attack carried one of the companies a few hundred
yards past the church and into Farwick Park, the big park surrounding the Kurhaus and Palast-Hotel
Quellenof. Yet this company's hold was tenuous at best, for the rest of the Battalion still was
occupied in the buildings on the approaches to the park.

No matter how much I try, I still try...

Sherman Marches West

Krupki, Byelorussia, June 28, 1944: Operation Bagration, launched by the Soviets on June 23rd,
was turning out to be highly successful, German reports noted that the Russians no longer
attacked as in the early days with masses of infantry across a broad front but instead employed
concentrated groups of infantry supported by well-controlled fire from heavy weapons with follow
up forces available, once favorable forward positions were established. In addition, the German
high command did not believe that this was the major portion of the Russian summer offensive and
refused to send strategic reserves immediately. Finally, however, the situation on the ground
proved threatening enough that the 5th Panzer Division with Tiger tanks of the attached 505th
Heavy Tank Battalion was sent to resist.

Game Length: 7.5 turns

For the Russians to win they must capture the buildings of the train station
For the Germans to win they must defend the station against the Russian onslaught

Russians: Squads, LMG's, AFV's
Germans: Squads, HMG, MMG, LMG's, PSK's, FT, AT Gun, AFV's

Boards: #T, #V

Aftermath: As the Tigers arrived they advanced to contact with the 3rd Byelorussian Front near Krupki
Railroad Station. The Russians with their lend-lease Shermans had marched west in an effort to surround
the demoralized and retreating elements of Army Group Center at Borisov. A sharp engagement occurred
and while the experienced Tigers inflicted heavy casualties, they could not stop the capture of the
station. Ultimately, the 505th destroyed 128 tanks of the 3rd Byelorussian Front over the following
few weeks but lost all 29 of its own Tigers in the process. The heavy losses to the Russians caused
the relief of Marshal Pavel Rotmistrov, but not before the elimination of some 350,000 German soldiers,
almost all of Army Group Center.

Smasher Karl

Seelow, Germany, April 16, 1945: With a large bridgehead across the Oder around Kustrin, the
1st Belorussian Front was ready to drive on Berlin. Opposing them was the 56th Panzer Corps
commanded by Lieutenant General Karl Weilding a capable and highly decorated panzer leader
known to his friends as "Smasher Karl".

Game Length: 10 turns

For the Russians to win they must take VP buildings to capture the town of Seelow
For the Germans to win they must prevent the Russians from capturing the town

Russians: Squads, HMG, MMG's, LMG's, Radio, AFV's
Germans: Squads, HMG, MMG, LMG's, Radio, AA Guns, AFV's

Boards: #2, #15, #22

Aftermath: The 8th Guards Army advanced into a hornet's nest. The 54th Panzer Corp pinned down
the Soviets in the most crucial sector for 48 hours until the night of the 17h when in the face
of superior numbers, they conceded the heights.

Hailstone -> RE: Submitted Scenarios (11/24/2019 10:36:01 PM)

Sunday, here we go...

Grunewald

Charlottenburg, Germany, April 26, 1945: Berlin was being crushed in a Soviet vise.
The situation looked hopeless but Hitler believed that Wenck's 12th Army could
disengage from the Americans on the Elbe and race over the Havel River to save the
stricken city. To facilitate this operation the Fuhrer ordered a thousand Hitler
Youth and the 18th Panzergrenadier Division to hold open the bridges and an east-west
corridor into the capital. Suddenly, Soviet spearheads drove through Grunewald, the
city park, striving to close the gap and completely surround Berlin.

Game Length: 8 turns

For the Russians to win they must exit enough troops to surround Berlin
For the Germans to win they must prevent the capital from being surrounded

Russians: Squads, MMG, LMG's, AFV's
Germans: Squads, HMG, MMG, LMG's, PSK's, AT Guns, ART Gun, AFV's

Boards: #5, #6, #23

Aftermath: Even though tremendously outnumbered, the defenders were able to halt the
advance of the 3rd Guards Tank Army for another day. The corridor shrank but the way
was still open for Wenck to save Berlin. The 12th Army was engaged on so many different
fronts that while units did succeed in reaching as far as Potsdam it could move no closer
to Berlin.

Victory at Pratulin

South of Pratulin, Poland, June 22, 1941: For many German units, Operation Barbarossa
began with the crossing of the Bug River. For the 17th and 18th Panzer Divisions, this
crossing was accomplished with specially modified tanks that could travel underwater
to depths of 10 to 15 meters. Originally designed for Operation SeeLowe (the invasion
of England) they were now deployed in Army Group Center's opening move across the Bug
River.

Game Length: 11.5 turns

For the Germans to win they must exit units to expand the bridgehead
For the Russians to win they must contain the German bridgehead

Germans: Squads, MMG's, LMG's, ATR, AFV's
Russians: Squads, MMG, LMG's, ATR's, AFV's

Boards: #4

Aftermath: The initial German thrust outside of Pratulin was quite successful. The Russian
frontier guards were completely surprised. Russian armored cars, however, had shown up and
were harassing the German infantry's bridgehead until the amphibious tanks crossed the Bug
River and attacked. Several armored cars went up in smoke while others fled. The Germans
had successfully expanded their bridgehead by the end of the first day.

Hell Freezes Over

Panovo, Russia, December 14, 1941: As Operation Typhoon ground to a halt and the brutal
Russian winter closed in, The German Army was left in a position of extreme peril at the
gates of Moscow. Strung out and suffering from heavy casualties, the Germans were in no
position to deal with the cold and the Russian counter-offensive that was brewing. The
German generals pleaded with Hitler to withdraw their frost-bitten and exhausted troops
to more defensible locations. Incredibly, and with rare good sense, Hitler sanctioned
the retreat of his troops. Not a moment too soon. Even as the Germans were pulling back
and digging in, STAVKA was positioning tough and especially equipped Siberian troops and
armor for the counter-offensive. Among the positions, the Germans were determined to hold
was the highway bridge near the town of Panovo. Partially destroyed during Operation Typhoon,
the town still provided the Germans with cover. Grim and shivering infantry of the 3rd
Motorized Rifle Regiment hunkered down in the frozen, burnt-out rubble and waited for the
Russians to appear.

Game length: 8.5 turns

For the Russians to win they must break-through the town of Panovo
For the Germans to win they must prevent the Russian break-through

Russians: Squads, MMG's, LMG's, ATR's, AFV's
Germans: Squads, HMG, MMG's, LMG's, Radio, AT Guns, AFV's

Boards: #12, #33

Aftermath: The Soviets were determined but lacked both leadership and a clearcut strategy.
Russian troops and armor swarmed across the bleak landscape time and again, but the Germans
had entrenched and fortified the key positions into hedgehogs. The Russian attacks were broken
up by German MG and artillery fire, and breakthroughs were headed off by the timely arrival of
German armor and mechanized infantry. In the case of Panovo, the defenders were invested from
several directions at once by Siberian ski troops and armor. Only the intervention of reinforcements
from the 6th Panzer Battalion prevented a breakthrough. German flexibility and combined arms had
driven off this attack. But it would not be the last.

Just Before Breakfast

September 11, 1944, Arnaville, France: Forced to evacuate Dornot at night,
XX Corps struggled to reinforce the sole remaining foothold it had across
the Moselle at Arnaville. At dawn, the Germans launched a strong counterattack.

Game Length: 7 Turns

For the Germans to win they must take most of the buildings in Arnaville
For the Americans to win they must prevent the Waffen SS from capturing the town

Germans: Squads, MMG's, LMG's, AFV's
Americans: Squads, HMG, MMG, BAZ's, AFV's

Boards: #2, #10, #17

Aftermath: At dawn, a strong counterattack was launched against the 1st Battalion.
Accurate fire from artillery and tank destroyers emplaced above the village of
Arnaville managed to drive the attackers back.

Here's a short tournament scenario...

Prelude to Fall Blau

Kramatorsk area, Russia, May 17, 1942: On May 12th the Soviets made their second
attempt to recapture Kharkov. Missing their initial opportunity, they committed their
second echelon troops. Unfortunately for them, it was too late as the Germans counter-
attacked to the south.

Game Length: 6.5 turns

For the Germans to win they must exit troops to meet with 6th Army to cut off the Russians
For the Russians to win they must stop the German offensive

Germans: Squads, LMG's, AFV
Russians: Squads, MMG, LMG's, ATR

Boards: #4

Aftermath: The 9th Army was not prepared to throw back a German attack. The Germans
threw the Soviets back with superior forces. On May 23rd, Army Group "Kleist" joined
up with the 6th Army to cut the Soviets off from the east. The Kharkov offensive had
failed.

Hailstone -> RE: Submitted Scenarios (12/6/2019 1:54:55 PM)

Here's another battle in the last days of the Reich but from the other side...

The Final Assault

Berlin, Alsenstrasse, April 30, 1945: The battle for the Reichstag was no
longer in doubt and the only remaining question was the date the former
parliament would fall. The situation was desperate but the defenders still
held. A new Soviet attack was launched at 1130 hours under the shelling
of German guns firing from the Kroll Opera House and soon the infantry
reached the anti-tank ditch and the edge of the Alsenstrasse. In the face
of this danger, the Germans quickly gathered a counterattack force: a
battalion of marine cadets.

Game Length: 8.5 turns

For the Germans to win they must recapture buildings in Berlin to delay the end
For the Russians to win they must prevent the Germans from delaying the final
assault on the Reichstag

Boards: #6, #23

Germans: Squads, HMG, MMG, LMG's, DC's, AA
Russians: Squads, HMG, MMG, LMG's, DC, ART, AFV's

Aftermath: The Alsenstrasse was crossed under enemy fire and the Cadets
seized a foothold in the buildings on the western side of the avenue.
After a promising start, the counterattack collided with elements of the
525th Infantry Regiment. Russian reinforcements quickly arrived to bolster
the defense and soon the Germans were thrown back to their starting line
with heavy losses. The last attack to delay the end of the Reich, from now
on reduced to a few square kilometers, failed.

Here's a short and sweet scenario...

Gavin's Northern Assault

Near Nijmegan, September 18, 1944: General Gavin's paratroopers were attempting
to capture the bridge at Nijmegan and link up with the British XXX Corps.

Game Length: 5.5 turns

For the Americans to win they must mop up the German defenders as they exit to meet
the British XXX Corp
For the Germans to win they must stop Gavin's assault

Americans: Squds, BAZ44"s
Germans: Squads, LMG's

Boards: #13

Aftermath: Gavin's combat-hardened paratroopers push forward under light resistance
and mopped up the German defenders. One day later they linked up with General Dempsey
and the British XXX Corp at Nijmegan Bridge.

So here's how I spent a rainy day...

Battle of Lake Ladoga

Near Lake Ladoga, August 4, 1941: Mannerheim's plan to recover the Karelian
Isthmus took the indirect approach. First, his left-wing would clear the area
north of the Vuoski River, outflanking Vipuri, and then turn towards the Gulf
of Finland to cut the Russians off from Leningrad. By the 4th, the Russians
were trapped against Lake Ladoga.

Game Length: 5.5 turns

For the Finns to win they must control the buildings by the lake
For the Russians to win they must fend off the Finn assault for the buildings

Finns: Squads, LMG's
Russians: Squads, LMG's

Boards: #5, #8

Aftermath: With the Russians trapped against the lake they once again fought
a skillful rearguard action. The Russians were able to evacuate most of their
men. By August 23rd, the Finns had cleared the whole north bank of the Vuoski
River.

Well here's a quicky or nooner or whatever you call it...

Surprise at Kalfertshaus

Germany, February 24, 1945: After XX Corp's 94th Infantry Division and
elements of the 10th Armored Division had established bridgeheads on the
east bank of the Saar River, plans were made to continue driving east and
capture the town of Zerf. In a move to expand the bridgehead by encouraging
a German withdrawal, the 5th Ranger Battalion was ordered to infiltrate the
German front line and out the main road leading to the German rear.

Game Length: 5 turns

For the Americans to win they must capture the two buildings along the road
heading toward the German rear
For the Germans to win they must prevent the Rangers from penetrating their lines

Americans: Squads, MMG's, BAZ45's
Germans: Squads, HMG, MMG

Boards: #16

Aftermath: As the Rangers approached the objective B Company came under fire from
a farmhouse. Not wishing to bypass a German stronghold they attacked. Just as the
Germans were being overrun, a machinegun in a hidden pillbox opened up, pinning
the Rangers. A flanking maneuver around the pillbox, combined with a rush of
the farmhouse, gave the Rangers the upper hand. All the Germans either surrendered
or were killed.

Now that's what I want to hear...

Mission Accomplished

Sicily, July 10, 1943: It was D-Day and Operation Husky was in full swing.
The 1st Battalion of the 505th Regimental Combat Team had the mission of
blocking the route to the invasion beaches of the U.S. 1st Infantry Division
at Gela. They were deployed in a valley astride the road leading from Niscemi
to Gela when, at about 0700 Hrs, a column of the Western Kampfgruppe, Hermann
Goering Division approached.

Game Length: 7 turns

For the Germans to win they must exit sufficient numbers to reach the invasion
beaches
For the Americans to win they must block the German advance to the invasion beaches

Germans: Squads, HMG, MMG's, LMG's,m AFV's
Americans: Squads, HMG, MMG's, MTR's, BAZ43's

Boards: #2, #19

Aftermath: The German column was preceded by a small advance guard which the
Americans ambushed from their hidden positions. Hearing the gunfire the Germans
deployed their infantry and advanced. The paratroopers maintained their concealment
until the Germans approached to within 100 yards. They then opened fire and pinned
the Germans in the open. German tanks rushed forward, but these were driven off with
accurate bazooka fire. Most of the German infantry were killed or captured and the
armor was forced to withdraw.

Here's another night scenario...

A Midnight Stroll

Northeast of Rzhev, November 15, 1941: Earlier in the day, and under cover of
heavy snowfall, the Russians captured Hill 747 which endangered the right
flank of the 464th regiment. At 2200 hours, after moving up to their jump over
positions under cover of night, the Germans counterattacked. Shouting loudly,
they broke into the Russian positions on the hill.

Game Length: 6 turns

For the Germans to win they must capture Hill 747
For the Russians to win they must hold the high ground

Germans: Squads, MMG's, LMG's
Russians: Squads, HMG, MMG's, LMG, MTR

Boards: #2

Aftermath: The attack confused the Russians who were taken by surprise. Caught
unawares, the Russian artillery remained silent throughout the battle. When
the signal flare went up, the German artillery opened fire on the Russian held
side of the hill. Russian machine guns covering the flanks put up fierce resist-
ance before being put out of action in hand-to-hand combat. After 45 minutes,
Hill 747 was completely in German hands. About 60 prisoners were taken and in
the morning 70 Russian dead were found on the hill. Of the five German casualties,
only one was seriously injured.

A Day on the Farm

Coxen's farm, Tunisia, November 25, 1942: Elements of the 1st Battalion,
commanded by Lt. Colonel Waters, were making rapid progress in their drive
toward Bizerte and Tunis. At 0700 Hours they seized a road junction south
of Mateur and then pushed east across the Tine River toward the Chouigui
Pass. Two miles northwest of the Pass contact was made with German Parachute
Engineers. The Germans fell back to a walled French farm.

Game Length: 8 turns

For the Americans to win they must capture the farm
For the Germans to win they must defend the farm

Americans: Squads, HMG, MMG, BAZ43's, MTR's, AFV's
Germans: squads, HMG, LMG's, DC's, AT Gun's, AFV

Boards: #6

Aftermath: The inexperienced U.S. forces were unable to dislodge the German
Paratroopers. However, when a U.S. Reconnaissance Company out-flanked the
farm and advanced east toward Djedeida, the Germans were forced to withdraw
to Mateur during the night.

Hey, it's that time of the year for ...

Winter Hell

Northwest of Moscow, Saturday, December 6, 1941: The winter, the attrition
of long months of war and finally the dramatic resistance of the Russians
have stopped the German offensive on Moscow. Between the River Sestra and
the Moscow Lake, five battalions of the German 36th Motorized Division are
scattered among several villages and groups of houses. At 0600 Hours, on
the coldest day of the winter (-40 Deg Celius), the Russian counteroffensive
is launched all along the front. In a nondescript hamlet, one German infantry
company supported by an ad hoc AT detachment is assaulted.

Game Length: 8.5 turns

For the Russians to win they must capture the stone buildings and exit troops westward
For the Germans to win they must stop the Russian offensive through the village

Russians: squads, MMG, LMG's, ATR, AFV's
Germans: squads, HMG, MMG's, LMG, AT Gun's, AFV

Boards: #16, #17

Aftermath: At top speed, four tanks mounted by 10 to 20 men stormed the village,
ejected the first company from the houses and tried to overrun the AT guns. Three
of the tanks were soon destroyed in close fights but the Russian infantry now
attacked from the woods following the artillery barrage. Despite heavy casualties,
the Germans were able to contain the assault with small arms and MG fire. Suddenly,
two more tanks appeared from the south in search of the remaining AT guns. Having
destroyed one of those tanks a 50mm AT gun malfunctioned at the moment of being
overrun. The last Russian tank crushed the piece three times before being destroyed
by the last AT gun. Too meager reinforcements and fires blazing everywhere in the
village imposed a German withdrawal. The Russians' constant attacks made this retreat
a nightmare and the 36th Motorized Division was nearly destroyed in the progress.

Running A Mook

Mook, Belgium, Wednesday, September 20, 1944: Operation Market Garden
was on its third day and already 24hrs behind schedule. Nijmegen Bridge
still was not in Allied control. German pressure on the airborne corridor
was increasing daily. In Mook, the Germans had taken the town thus threaten-
ing the only bridge the 82nd controlled at that time. Colonel Eckman quickly
rallied all available forces and attacked Mook.

Game Length: 5.5 turns

For the Americans to win they must capture the town of Mook
For the Germans to win they must defend Mook, the pathway to Nijmegen Bridge

Americans: Squads, MMG, BAZ44's
Germans: Squads, MMG, LMG's

Boards: #3, #10

Aftermath: General Gavin recognized the importance of Mook and asked for help
from Cold Stream Guards. Meanwhile, Colonel Eckman attacked and, in an all-day
house-to-house engagement, slowly pushed the Germans back out of Mook just as
the Cold Stream guards arrived.
