You seem to be having very good success attacking DDs with torpedoes. Mine always seem to miss such fast moving targets.

the trick is to damage them before, in this case Zuiho's Kates already bombed it

Lowpe -> RE: Dec14: Raiders of Noumea (3/19/2016 1:55:32 PM)

Well done with the AMCs, and I like your thinking on these ships. Here is hoping they get away!

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: Dec14: Raiders of Noumea (3/19/2016 2:25:59 PM)

Thanks, and this is the status on Malaya. Tomorrow will be important

- BB Nagato was the original carrier escort, but since Kongo spent most of its ammo against Marblehead, I decided it was better to swap places. hopefully 4 heavy cruisers and Nagato will be enough to take care of anything he throws. He still have an intact Force Z, Boise, Houston and a slightly damaged Mauritius.

- BB Haruna is too damaged to be part of the operations; it will be, for the time being, a floating AA trap at Brunei. Eventually it will got to Hong Kong for repairs

- Carriers run at full speed for 2 days (this is why they arrived much earlier than the battleships), so having AOs ready for refueling was critical.

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: Dec14: Raiders of Noumea (3/19/2016 8:56:45 PM)

I knew it!
the raiders were intercepted: AMC Hokoku Maru sunk, AMC Aikoku Maru still alive, and it might make it

otherwise a quiet turn.

I made a big mistake in the invasions of Kuching and Singkawang: I low balled the required number of LCUs needed to quickly grab them, in the case of Singkawang this was compounded by the cruiser attack that sank one freighter. I will need to send some of my reserves (already embarked, actually already near Borneo): The reserves are 3 or 4 SNLFs. I have decided that 2 will go to Singkawang, the other two will remain on reserve.

In other news:
Jolo will be fully operational (HQ-a included) tomorrow.

Manado shock attack achieved 1-to-1 but left with too many casualties; I will wait another day, I am also sending
a naval guard unit as reinforcement. They will need to dodge the coastal gun fire.. I hope they do, as they are moving "lightly" escorted.. I just can't use another cruiser at the moment.

Ternate successfully invaded, will fall tomorrow,

Small invasions at Oroquieta and Zamboanga; this is the starting moves for the invasion of Mindanao

Do you have any plans to move on Mersing to try and cut off his troops fleeing south?

quote:

ORIGINAL: Anachro

Do you have any plans to move on Mersing to try and cut off his troops fleeing south?

Recon shows me he already fled, so it is not a high priority.
I will eventually land at Kuching and Mersing; I have actually a naval guard unit preparing for it, but because this operation will require naval assets and the gains will be marginal, it will be postponed for some time. Priority now is North Borneo then Palembang.

Jorge_Stanbury -> Dec15: Kuching fell (3/20/2016 2:08:16 PM)

Kuching fell on December 15th, Ternate too. And there are now 3 LCUs at both Singkawang and Manado, these two bases should fall next turn. Hong Kong should also fall next turn, it somehow survived the last one, fort is at level 0 while all Takao bombers are hitting it.

What else?
- He surprised Tarawa's (weak) invasion fleet of one freighter. or maybe it was a mutual surprise? he certainly mined Tarawa, just in time when I was finishing unloading. so at the end I managed to unload at least 90% of the naval guard LCU before he sank xAK Aratama Maru

- Overall I had been reckless with my good cargo ships, I have lost :

Warships : not a lot I could have done to avoid these losses, Isuzu and Kari went down fighting a major Allied cruiser strike, CM Nasami doing escort duty (to submarines)
CL Isuzu
TB Kari
CM Nasami
SSX Ha-24
SSX Ha-22
SSX Ha-19
SSX Ha-14

Merchants : here is where I have been reckless, at least a half of the important losses could had been avoided:
AMC Hokoku Maru (Aikoku maru class): reckless raiding near Noumea
xAK Yamasimo Maru:(YusenA class) not escorted
xAK Noto Maru (YusenN class): not at fault, submarine attack, convoy was escorted
xAK Aratama Maru (YusenA class): reckless Tarawa invasion
PB Eiko Maru (Ansyu-C class: not at fault, sunk defending a convoy from cruisers
xAK Teisen Maru (Aden class): sunk by fires, after cruiser's engagement, most troops were able to escape
xAK Yuri Maru (Akasi class): not escorted
xAK Ryoyo Maru (Gozan class): not escorted
xAKL Hanakawa Maru (Daigen class): not at fault, surprised by PBYs near Batan island
ACM Kyo Maru #1 (Tosu ACM class): not at fault, bombed by B-17s at Babeldaob

So I have lost 1 irreplaceable light cruiser, 1 torpedo boat, 3 good Yusen freighters and 1 excellent auxiliary cruiser [:(] ... and this even before Palembang invasion.

- Talking about Palembang, tomorrow I will send a destroyer division (Naka + 7 DDs) to do "reconnaissance in force", they are ordered to run at full speed, reach Palembang, then return to base. I expect to see torpedo boats, I also expect mines, maybe enemy cruisers and destroyers? I certainly expect losses...

Jorge_Stanbury -> Dec16: Manado and Singkawang fell (3/20/2016 11:04:39 PM)

- At last Manado fell! moreover, Singkawang also fell, which means ground based Zero and LBA support, this last one, is important, even if limited due to supply and lack of HQ.

- Also in the news, Rabaul invaded successfully, troops are all in land, tomorrow they will attack. I believe he has been taking Lark brigade to Pt Moresby using Catalinas, if anything this would make it easier.

- Also invaded: Davao, Hollandia,

- AVD William Preston sunk, it was guarding a small convoy of 2 xAKLs. CL Danae sinking is confirmed in the OPs report.

- Somehow my bombers decided to naval strike Singapore [X(]. But thankfully I have been sweeping it daily, thereby the Buffalos didn't take off. In the end it was a decoy fleet of small xAPs.. all destroyed.

- Talking about CAP traps, he put the fying tigers on LRCAP over Hong Kong, once again, thankfully it came with few planes and the losses were minimal

- And more decoys/ CAP traps: he sent a fleet of small xAKLs up the Makassar strait; this was to set the Netties against Balikpapan's Dutch Buffalos... for a 3rd time, I had good luck that very few planes took off, and thereby I was able to destroy most xAKLs for little damage.

- Where I run out of luck: submarines; I am losing the submarine war: today I lost 1 cargo plus 2 more are severely damaged and likely will sink tomorrow. I am so pissed about this that I have decided to stop any convoy that doesn't have an escort. I am still a few days before the xAKs to PBs conversions are completed.

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: Dec16: Manado and Singkawang fell (3/20/2016 11:31:05 PM)

Next turn will be fun to watch: I am sacrificing Yokosuka 4th SNLF in a run to Palembang.
I am still sending a heavy cover force to protect, but it is likely that they will find whatever surprise he has prepared for the occasion.
4th Independent Mixed Brigade will then have an easier time one turn after

Jorge_Stanbury -> Dec17: Ambon surprise (3/21/2016 3:49:05 AM)

First of all, the fleets moving to Palembang traveled unopposed, this except of some inconsequential air attacks and two unlucky tankers that should not have messed with battleships.
Tomorrow they will all hit the beaches, I have 2 DMS minesweeper task forces also moving there but it is most likely that Yokosuka 4th SNLF TF will arrive before them.

Other than that:
- Rabaul attack failed, will try again in a few days. Davao in the other hands was captured quickly. Hong Kong finally enter the co-prosperity sphere, DMS will clean the mines and afterwards start loading for the next phase.

- Ambon: naval search showed xAPs/ xAKs TFs at Ambon last turn. Thus I sent Nagara's TF to investigate... and it found several xAPs and xAKs loading what looks like a base force [:'(] [:D] I hope they know how to swin

Jorge_Stanbury -> Dec18: Palembang, Mersing and Houston (3/21/2016 2:46:31 PM)

A great turn [:)]

- Houston spotted and torpedoed by I-159, his skipper just won a ticket to the most expensive Geisha house and a boat load of sake. As you can see from the map, this is likely a strong SCTF; Houston, Jupiter, Paul Jones, I bet Boise is there too.. maybe Repulse?
In any case, I don't think he will keep moving north, he should not... but we will see... I have mostly light cruisers at Ternate, he can defeat them, but not without getting exposed to the torpedo happy dance

Jorge_Stanbury -> Dec19: Palembang damaged (3/22/2016 2:35:43 AM)

Mersing and Palembang captured, Rabaul held.

I don't know if damaging 99 oil and 82 refinery is good for a PBEM; against the AI, I almost always get it with no damage or at most a little (20s)... so this suck.. moreover, I also lost 27 at Miri.. which means a lot of supply will need to be moved to the SRA. Only the oil will be repaired

What else? one DMS sank at Hong Kong... minesweeping is a dangerous business, I should had sent the pretty abundant xAMcs instead...

Also, I am seriously losing the submarine war, I had several attacks, most unsuccessful, but still, I am losing a freighter or 2 per turn, this with escorted convoys.

I also lost a couple xAKs at Palembang to LBA naval strikes.. but these were kind of unavoidable. Now that I captured the base, I will provide some serious CAP

Anachro -> RE: Dec19: Palembang damaged (3/22/2016 3:13:02 AM)

In my game, it's definitely the Dutch that do all the damage earlier. I think the US subs have scored around 40-50 hits so far - all duds for the most part. I just got lucky and had one US sub score 3 successful hits on the Ryujo in one turn.

I think as Japan you really need to make use of land-based ASW along your convoy/supply routes. Just make sure you are training a bunch of army pilots in Manchuria on ASW...well, I'm sure you are already. I'm playing a game as Japan right now as well and took the option of destroying a good portion of the Manilla sub fleet, which I think has helped.

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: Dec19: Palembang damaged (3/22/2016 3:35:34 PM)

I think it is a matter of too many ships moving, all over the place. The chaos of December 41 really gives an advantage to submarines. Once things start to settle down: like he loses his forward bases, I mine all choke points and PB conversions are completed, and more important once only heavily escorted convoys cross the oceans, then losses will decline.

I am not too concerned, yet, as only 4 freighters sunk, so far, are worth mentioning: one good AMC raider, two Yusen A and one Yusen N. All others easily replaceable, won't be missed.

I haven't yet started ASW training, my starting focus is on naval search for the navy, and I will not yet use Army planes for ASW.. eventually, but first priority for the Army is in building a good bombing force.

Based on my experience playing Allies, I prefer to train "generalists" first, then focus on specific skills. In other words, each and every pilot will be trained on one primary skill, then move onto a secondary an maybe a third. This makes it easier to manage them, if I am in urgent need of dive bombers, for example, I can move some patrol pilots already trained in search, then it is only one more skill to add. I am certainly too lazy to do very specialized training, in my Allied game I ended using my ASW or low bombing specialist as high level bombers simply because I run out of pilots, so I ended wasting skills.

The specific skills I plan to focus on are as follows:

Army and Navy Fighters
Primary: Air. Secondary: Defense (strafing)

Navy torpedo or 2E bombers
Primary: naval attack torpedo, Secondary: naval attack bomb, Tertiary: search

Navy dive bombers
Primary: naval attack bomb, Secondary: search, Tertiary: ASW

Navy Float planes/ patrol
Primary: search, Secondary: ASW
some (few) squadrons working as proxy for recon and fighter (sweep) squadrons

Army bombers
Primary: ground bombing, Secondary: low ground
Only when I have a good pool of army bombers, I will designate a few squadrons to train for ASW

Army and Navy recon
Primary: recon, Secondary: naval search

Army and Navy Transport
Primary; Transport, Seconday: General skills

KB: ASW
Only pilots with excellent primary skills get into the KB, hence they can work on improving their ASW

Jorge_Stanbury -> Dec 21: Mersing unloading continues (3/23/2016 8:40:30 PM)

On December 21st the invasion of Mersing continues with minimal problems.

He sent a small fleet (DD Encounter, DM Stronghold) to try to disrupt it, but failed. the former sank, the latter left undamaged.

Air strikes were weak at Mersing, with few bombers capable of crossing Zero's CAP (provided by mini-KB). some subs were spotted, as I have all Kates and all float planes on this TF doing ASW.

In other news:
Rabaul naval bombarded, next turn will be "shock" attacked.
xAP Dominion Monarch ate two torpedoes, hopefully it will sink
Guam invasion (1 xAP, 1 TB) attacked by AM Penguin. minor damage, invasion/ unloading continued afterwards

Anachro -> RE: Dec 21: Mersing unloading continues (3/23/2016 8:44:20 PM)

Wow that weather mod is very nice. Any idea where I can find it? That would be a lot easier to read than the current weather toggle... The other icons too. Or maybe I've just been using the wrong weather toggle.

Also...good job at Mersing, should help speed up attack on Singapore. And that is a very nice transport your opponent just lost. Too bad for him. Has he successfully gotten most troops out to Burma or have you stopped him at all?

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: Dec 21: Mersing unloading continues (3/23/2016 9:31:04 PM)

The clouds and combat icons are from Jace11
https://sites.google.com/site/jacesstuff/home/other-files/war-in-the-pacific-admiral-s-edition

Mersing at this stage will fail to trap significant forces, I am expecting only a few LCUs,
but it will expedite the final conquest, as it will allow me to capture rail terminus, then those forces currently at Taiping or Alor Star will quicker for a final showdown at Johore and Singapore.

I have been sinking several transports, but I haven't seen anything "big" in terms of troop losses; just a few trying to leave Cebu, Manila or Ambon. Still I am more interested in getting the real state at the moment.

I haven't started yet the move to Burma, just the preliminary moves. I expect another few days, maybe a week before the 33 division arrives to Rahaeng, by then I would had consolidated Malaya and thereby in a position to move some components of 3rd air fleet, recon in particular, to the Thai-Burma frontier

Jorge_Stanbury -> Dec 22: Rabaul, Dragon and Durban (3/24/2016 3:50:46 AM)

South West Pacific theater got exciting this last turn;

After my cruisers bombarded Rabaul for a second night expending all ammo and returning to Truk... in the meantime I guess my opponent saw an opportunity to do some harm ro the invasion fleets and unleashed cruisers Dragon and Durban, followed by 4 USN destroyers... but he failed to spot another TF I had there; patroling the waters south or Rabaul. This TF was composed by battleships Hiei and Kirishima, of KB fame. The resulting battle ended with two cruisers and one destroyer sunk and another DD severely damaged.

Then the question is where is the KB?? I left it at Truk, I didn't want to risk it on secondary objectives, and I like to keep him guessing on its whereabouts. The fact that Hiei and Kirishima are here will make him nervous.

Dragon and Durban are very poor ships, and the same can be said about already sunk Marblehead, Danae, Java, Tromp and DeRuyter... however, considering how few ships are available to the Allies early on, this is a good win as it reduces his options to intercept my invasion fleets

I am building, monthly, 15 Petes + 15x2 Dinah = 45 in total. I am in balance at the moment, however, I will need more as I have a 30 plane Sonia factory turned off (enough inventory). I will eventually need to build some Topsy-II and a few Ki-45c and d.

Ha-32: 2 factories at 73(17) and 16(14), this is required for several important planes: G4M Betty, Ki-21 Sally, B6N Jill, H8K Emily and JM Jack.
I am running dangerously low on inventories. I want to increase this to 120 as a starting point (just enough to cover production of 30 Betties and 30 Sallies). Eventually, when the supply situation is less constrained, I will increase it to 150 or more.

Ha-33: 2 factories at 81(9) and 16(14). This is required for G3M Nell, H6K Mavis, D3A Val, E13A1 Jake among others
Since I stopped Nell production (enough inventory), I am just barely OK with 120 per month. I am using 40 for Jakes, 30 for Vals, 20 for Tinas, 40 for Mavis and 40 for Dinah; thus I need no less than 230, probably more, but supply is too low to increase it, so I will simply stop production Tinas or Mavis if inventory becomes too low

Ha-34: 1 factory at 26(4). This is required for Ki-44 Tojo and Ki-49 Helen, so not needed yet. Moreover these two are not popular PDU OFF models, therefore I most likely will keep this factory small

Ha-35: 3 factories at 190(0), 16(24), 16(4). This is required for several important models: A6M Zero, B5N Kate, Ki-43 Oscar, Ki-48 Lily, Ki-45 Nick, among others.
Difficult to say how many I will need. 240 is just barely OK for now as I am using: 60 for Zero, 100 for Oscar, 68 for Lily and 15 for Kate. I might be better with around 260 a month, but I want to be careful as I certainly don't want to overproduce, specially considering that I will likely turn off production of Zero and Oscars once they reach a certain level of inventory.

Not Building
Hikari will be spent on B5N1s

Ha-5 will be spent on Ki-57 I Topsy

Amakaze will be used on E14Y1 Glen.. however, I will need to leave a few for Q1W1 Lorna. squadron Sasebo Ku T-4 will need 7 planes and it won't upgrade to anything. So I will likely build no less than 20 Lornas which means I will have to save 40 Amakazes.

Hitachi early: used by underwhelming dog Ki-54 Hickory. Its inventory should be enough to cover the small production

Kawasaki early: used only by Ki-32 Mary and although I would be happy to build them all 85 in the pool, there are very few squadrons that use or upgrade to this model. Moreover, starting inventory of Ki-32 is high, thereby there is really no need to build any.

Kotobuki: obsolescent, used by Ki-27 Nate or A5M Claude, neither is in production or desired

Ki-43 Oscar will be built in important numbers as it is the main Army fighter (PDU OFF).
Sooner than later I will need to restart production of K-51 Sonia
Sally production might be turned off for a few weeks, this to improve Ha-32 inventory situation

I am keeping Zero A6M2 production relatively small, as it doesn't upgrade.
I am resizing float plane squadrons, thereby I 'll need E13A1 and F1M2 in good numbers.
Nell inventory is high and loses small [:)], thereby no need to produce it yet
I am not building any recon plane yet. I simple don't have any leftover production line to build C5M2 Babs... at least all squadrons are at full strength, moreover in my Allied game experience, it is OK to run recon missions without a full plane complement; one or two planes are enough; not to mention JAAF abundant recon squadrons can take over in extreme need

Thanks for your explanations on the air production/research, need to understand this better for my own Japan PBEM...

Jorge_Stanbury -> Disaster! (3/26/2016 5:11:43 AM)

The stupid commander of the battleship force covering Mersing invasion had the great idea of reacting to one DD parked at Singapore... Which meant they had to run a gauntlet against heavy caliber CD guns and mines

Losses so far:
- BB Hyuga at 99 fires, it will sink tomorrow
- 5 first class destroyers: 1 Yugumo, 4 Hatsuhara class
- 1 second rate destroyer: Momi class
- I-124 somehow also decided to get inside Singapore, hit 3 mines and sank

Well, at least this disaster was not due directly due to my orders. The AI will sometimes make some really weird decisions. It is a game, so I will simply move on

But I will also do some investigation on possible indirect ways I could have avoided this. I tend to prefer aggressive commanders and I was under the impression that react would avoid fortress/ known minefields.

Anachro -> RE: Disaster! (3/26/2016 5:27:53 AM)

Damn...bad luck there. Did you have your reaction set above 0 or 1? I guess we found out why Yamashita came through the backdoor to Singapore.

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: Disaster! (3/26/2016 1:24:09 PM)

Yes I always put my TFs to maximum reaction, and never bother changing them afterwards, unless of course the TF become a cripple. But then, never before did any of my TFs react to the guns of Singapore.

And remember that if the leader is aggressive, then the TF will react regardless of the setting.

One potential "lesson learnt" is not to use "patrol" setting near ports. Patrolling TFs are more keen to react, better to use "remain on station" if being close to a defended port is unavoidable

Lowpe -> RE: Disaster! (3/26/2016 4:56:06 PM)

What a horrible outcome, but what a great reaction![sm=happy0065.gif]

I tend to like my naval commanders less aggressive for Japan.

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: Disaster! (3/26/2016 5:06:28 PM)

This was the setting; I initially thought it was Raizo Tanaka's folly, but then I realized he was leading the Kongos. The commander's aggressive rate is 68... not a lot for Japan

Big contributors = big mistakes:

- "Patrol" instead of "Remain on station", the later is less reactive.
- Threat tolerance absolute, routing normal: these two are usually good, as I didn't want them to run away from LBAs, but should be disabled when operating close to a fortress.
- Max react = 6 : Not needed in the particular task of covering Mersing landing
