This is the land situation at Burma: 2nd Infantry Division assaulted Chittagong in a surprise invasion; opposition was too heavy, thus I decided to invade Cox Bazaar instead, which was successfully captured by 4th division. Afterwards several reinforcements had been rushed (both sides). For the moment, my key objective is to open a land corridor so that 2nd ID can move out of Chittagong if needed. This is Burma; air and naval: Naval situation is precarious, but this is after a really nasty slug fest in which I lost 2 heavy cruisers and 3 destroyers with several others having to withdraw to Singapore. I have a battleship TF coming as reinforcements, so the critical timing is the next few days in which only mini KB + a few light cruisers and DDs will need to cover important invasions. The situation is as follows: - March 27th 1942, near the end of amphibious advantage - My main focus had been in taking over the SW Pacific islands (Suva, Noumea are taken, Pago Pago will be the last American stand). - Burma and India had been secondary on my conquest list. Main objective here is only to push the Allies out of range of Magwe oil, to put the fighting focus up north to gain as much oil as I can before the inevitable heavy bombing campaign - I have command of the sea; this after heavily fought battles in which, at the cost of 2 heavy cruisers and 3 destroyers lost, I sank 3 battleships and several cruisers& destroyers, wiped out Hermes air squadron and left 2 additional battleships in heavy damage, inneed of long repair. The specific question is; what should I do with Chittagong? try capturing, bypass or leave? as you can see, he brought pretty much everything available to guard this base. I am debating if the benefits will out weight the costs of capturing it some key benefits: - Chittagong is "clear terrain" - His LCUs are numerous, but poor quality until much later on - Good chance to destroy scarce British devices, even more considering low rate of replacements - Coastal hex is subject to battleship bombardment - British air forces cannot maintain the kind of attrition losses we are both suffering over Chittagong skies; once he is depleted, I can easily start a bombing campaign disadvantages: - as mentioned already, lots and lots of troops - he is on a rail junction, he can easily bring reinforcements - he is on a rail junction, his supply flow is much better than mine, - monsoon coming - I will need to bring a lot more LCUs to this theater - Lots of AA will deplete my bombers fleet Thoughts?? [X(] Supply for your troops at Chittagong must be really difficult; I would imagine that without a good supply line you have no chance to take Chittagong. Also there is the British base at Akyab to your rear (which maybe you're going to take anyway). How confident are you of long term air superiority? The Allies could send some American fighters to India and/or move some or all of the AVG there.

All those losses in the Indian Ocean. Confirmed: Ramillies, Resolution, Prince of Wales Revenge and Royal Sovereign heavy damaged; maybe one or both of them sank, as I have "Oklahoma and Colorado" flagged as sunk near Akyab in the FOW ships losses list. I saw one British carrier in the Pacific a month ago, if I have to guess, I would say he has all his carriers together And more important, I have 3 CVLs + 1 CVE at Rangoon. I can take care of the British unless he supports them with the USN. Even then, I would have the upper hand as long as I keep the fight within LBA range All supply at Coxs bazaar was hauled by sea, I guess I will need to keep pumping with the hope of some moving to the front. Akyab is just leftover LCUs from Burma, I will eventually deal with it, I have two more division joining the party: 14 division just entered the Malacca strait, and 48th resting at Manila. Then I also have 38th and 21st divisions at Batavia. If resistance is weak (fingers crossed) then I can storm Chittagong in a month or so I haven't seen any hint of US forces in India, but I would say even if they appear, I won't be worried for at least another 4 months. By then I will most likely be on the defensive anyway

That's a pity no China involved [:)] About Chittagong: it seems a juicy target, lot of stuff here and you are doing a great job sinking his ships. I would say go for it and then retreat if you don't want to be heavily engaged in India.

We are actually fighting on China; it is just at a very slow tempo.. I will post some maps tonight. With regards to sinking and fighting in general: he is very aggressive, in land, air and sea, which means I am inflicting quite a lot of damage, but I am also getting a bloody nose in return. He is also good at placing submarines (or maybe I suck at ASW??); I have lost way too many tankers already: 3 "good" oilers + 2 more on shipyards repairing torpedo damage and lots of small 1,250 capacity ones. The former are irreplaceable, the later only useful until I start converting St-C in ~60 days

So this is where I am as of April 1st, 1942 Pacific: Allies are still holding Pago Pago and Koumac. In the former, they have 1 USA division, 2 Marine def battalions and one base force, this against 2 Japanese division + eng + art. I am very confident it will fall soon. For the later: I am not sure, he might be reinforcing it (or maybe evac?). heavy losses: I am still in tears about one fast oiler, two slow oilers and one medium tanker lost [:(] all 12 others [X(]are of the very small type. With regards to damage ships: - Zuikaku at Kure, will be back online in 4 days. then it will likely go to Rabaul - Fuso at Singapore will need 61 days - Yamashiro and Ise on transit to HI, the former will need around 30 days, the later around one year - Chitose at Yohohama will need 7 days, will likely follow Zuikaku - CAs: Suzuya at Yokohama 14 days, Haguro and Ashigara at Rabaul& Singapore respectively 7 days. CA Kako, CLs Kis and Abukuma at Suva will require a month to get emergency repairs prior to moving to HI. CL Kuma at Singapore 22 days. Enemy losses are of course much harder to assess: I have excluded (in red) those that are probably too good to be true: - I believe all USN BBs survived, with maybe 4 still under repair; but for some reason they keep coming on the sunk list. - I have also excluded submarine torpedo hits, because it is really difficult to sink anything bigger than a destroyer with only one hit. I am playing PDU- OFF so main focus of R&D is on the Zero line for IJN and Oscar/ Frank for IJA I just noticed the very useless KI-54c Hickory... this will be replaced for another 30 KI-61a Tony EDIT: no, actually I will change it for another D4Y1 I plan to keep the two A6M3 factories doing research (next in line would be A6M3a) and convert the existing B5N1 production into A6M3, this once A6M3 is available and I run out of Hikari engines (should happen in a month). Where is the army? Pago Pago fell suddenly, so it will take me some time to redeploy the 2 victorious divisions. I am still in the process of bringing LBAs and air support to this region. which is an underdeveloped wasteland except for a few bases A turn ago 25th Air HQ arrived to Suva, this is good news because I can now have torpedo carrying Betties here. Before this, the only air support, other than a few float planes, was only what KB could provide, and this is "expensive" support in terms of fuel consumption, unbelievable expensive, 6 full (big) tanker loads had been spent in capturing Suva/ PagoPago and that just let me fill the tanks, Suva is still at zero fuel. So I want to move the KB out of here ASAP, it will most likely leave escorting redeploying Pago Pago divisions. KB will likely be based somewhere between Rabaul, Kwajalein and Suva; maybe Tulagi or Tabiteau? I have started building all these outlying bases; each has some sort of construction battalion (playing DBB-C, so really not a lot in the building department) There are very few other L2 bases with air support present: Noumea, Baker, maybe a couple more. So really not in a position to stop a convoy unless I send the navy. That said, he has been smart in not sending fat convoys within Japanese controlled waters. I don't think I can stop USA to Australia supply route, at most I am forcing him to go south, to follow a southern leg: USA-NZ-Australia I will position submarines to make it as painful as possible, and I will build a strong LBA/ Patrol/ FP system of naval search. I might even send raiders from time to time, but stopping the supply route is impossible, too much fuel!

The "expansion" cost me 5 AMCs and 12 xAPs I still have 6 AMCs left, but I doubt I will risk them, as they are navalized "APs" and can be more helpful on future, limited invasions and/ or as convoy escorts that are capable of carrying cargo (troops, resource, supply). Still, I can use destroyers and light cruisers to raid enemy convoy lanes, of course not too far away from Japanese seas. More important, I used amphibious capable ships sparingly and therefore I have: 2 LSDs + 4 APDs: capable of carrying ~ one regiment 15 Yusen A/N each capable of carrying between 1,350 and 1,600 troops each. This plus 6 AMCs is roughly equivalen to ~ 2 divisions. KB found a small TF of raider; I bet he was heading to Suva or Pago Pago His fire was very effective against destroyers; I ended up with 4 seriously damaged, definitively at risk considering how far away are they from the closest shipyard.
