Rayfer -> USA West Coast City Supplies (3/9/2016 12:12:24 AM)

I'm at the Dec. 20th, 1941 turn and Seattle, San Fran and San Diego all have yellow supply exclamation points. What am I doing wrong here? It doesn't seem right. Thanks, Ray

Turn the supply demand spinners to max for a couple of turns and see what that does.

Thanks BW58....but I'm not familiar with the terminology "supply demand spinners". What's a spinner and where do I find them?

Usually they will not require any spinning. What you're observing is normal, the supply system will catch up (or is it Ketchup?). The US has virtually infinite supply. There are many things worthy of obsessing over, supply on the US west coast isn't one of them.

Uhm, that is strange. Aren't you perhaps stockpiling supplies on the East Coast?

CaptBeefheart -> RE: USA West Coast City Supplies (3/9/2016 7:19:01 AM)

What scenario are you playing? I think some of the mods may start with pretty low CONUS supply.

Cheers,
CC

Lecivius -> RE: USA West Coast City Supplies (3/9/2016 2:36:30 PM)

Yeah, relax. They all start a little low, but build up in the first few months as the game progresses. This is historical so you don't build up a few fortresses in the first few months. WAD.

Yes, I did have the east coast set to stockpile....I take I should put it back to no?

Being a beginner and my first campaign, I decided to do the full campaign, quiet China, non-historical first turn and Japanese surprise off.

Thanks...! This is most helpful. In the glut of stuff to learn in this game, this part had slipped through the cracks.

Put it back to No. Right now the supplies aren't moving from East Coast to West Coast. That is why you are seeing the supply shortage in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

And there really is no reason to have it set to stockpile in any case. The East Coast has infinite supply production really.

Even running supplies from the East Coast to Cape Town, you'll never see a significant reduction in the East Coast's supply level.

And by the way. This is something you should be doing both with supply and fuel.

The East Coast is your endless supply and fuel depot.

I've conquered AI West coast once (except SF), and it was a re-e-e-eal hassle to fulfill all those crazy supply demands in coastal cities [:D].
Darn American consumer lifestyle, they all require 60k+ supplies with just a garrison in the city. Had to slow down operations and wait for supplies shipped in because the cities just did not give any supply outside for troops.

Edit: fired up a save, and not all cities, but a number (PrR, Vancouver, Seattle, Tahoma, LA, Mare Island) have 20k supplies as minimum req, whcih translates into 60k hoarded. Must be a port+airfield threshold. Since I started with north, went through most of those hoarders on the way south, and it was a hassle given I was unlucky with capturing yankee supplies

Well, it seems all port bases on the West Coast have those high supply needs. I guess this was done to attract inland-produced supplies to those bases, especially from the East Coast. The downside of this is apparent in your case - the bases are now occupied by the Japanese and their only supply need should be dictated by your garrisons' needs. Right now, I don't think you can conquer all Continental USA, because the supply will be stuck in the ports. I think only a Japanese command HQ can ovveride this mechanism and pull the supplies inland.

Never stockpile anything in the US/Canada, you need a fluid supply net. Eventually you'll want to set all your big west coast port bases to draw 25k extra all the time, that should ensure a large enough surplus builds up so you can fill all your supply convoys with no needed delay as the base waits to draw in more supply as the convoy empties whats on hand.

It'll take a few weeks for the supply net to fill out the empty bases across North America, so don't pull the extra 25k until about mid February. If you draw the 25k too early your inland bases will run dry and your planes will get damaged or destroyed due to lack of supply, so give it a few weeks to normalize things.

Jim

Actually the advice from Jim D Burns can be extended to all bases, not just those in USA/Canada.

There really are very few circumstances where stockpiling or use of the spinners is essential. Most people who think they understand the overland auto logistic operations and therefore can play around with stockpiles and the spinners really do not know what they are doing. The simple rule of thumb is that use of stockpiling and spinners will distort the auto logistic operations to the disadvantage of the player. The malus will not necessarily be experienced at the base in question but it will be experienced elsewhere and create a more severe problem.

Only play with stockpiling and the spinners if you really know what you are doing. And if you have that degree of knowledge you will know how the same benefits can usually be achieved without resorting to stockpiling and the spinners.

Alfred

geofflambert -> RE: USA West Coast City Supplies (3/19/2016 7:11:55 PM)

malus? Are you talking about apples or misfortune or both? I sure wouldn't want to run out of apples.
