Kel -> Siege arty counter question (3/10/2016 7:18:19 PM)

Could the designer explain why the Siege Gun counter has no gun complement (and no siege gun/heavy mortar whatever) symbol ?

To put only the inf detachment seems a bit counterintuitive to the common sense wargamer - the counter is lost among infantery formations and does not stand out at all.
It seems a bit weird to put the less significant part (the infantry detachment) as a symbol and not the decisive one (siege gun).

My request : can someone provide an alternate counter with a proper nato symbol ?

Hi Kelblau,

The siege artillery counter represents the detachment of infantry and engineers assigned to it, not the big guns themselves. For the scale of the game they are below the radar.

However there have been a number of requests to change the counter and it's on my list of things to do.

Cheers,
Cameron

Thank you for the quick answer - and for this good game (just received yesterday the hardcover manual, which is gorgeous).

The only problem I see with this is at present while the keen eyed Soviet player who pays attention will see the siege artillery among the crowd of other counters, its still quite subtle. A siege artillery counter telegraphs 'get out of dodge' in big flashing lights before the firing actually starts. I quite like it as is. If the German commander doesn't know where his heavy guns are more fool him.

Hi Gunnulf,

Good point. Hadn't considered that.

Probably only applicable to PBEM though.

If you take that argument too seriously you might have to stop using the armor and mechanized symbols on the grounds that they give your opponent too much information.

The Soviets had a pretty good spy network and they were probably getting reports on things like the movement of heavy artillery.

Hi Philippe,

Good point there as well.
