Attack Condor -> (4/29/2003 7:55:49 AM)

It may be too late this turn, but in the future, if you have a FT TF heading in harm's way, just change them to a surface combat TF and have them wait with a Patrol/Do Not Retire option... maybe move a hex or two if spotted. Once the enemy TF leaves, switrch the DDs back to FT TF and finish the mission :)

wobbly -> Things get hairy (4/30/2003 3:48:37 AM)

d@mn, I forgot to send my combat report to work, so I'll see if i can remember what occured:

6 nells launched a nighttime raid on PM - 4 runway hits - fixed by the morning. 1 Nell damaged by flak

My FT DD's make it in and out without hitting mines or finding enemy warships; however, how they did it I don't know! They must have just cleared harbour as a slow transport TF of japanese pulled in! One of the transports hits one of his mines and they begin to unload. More Naval attacks in the wind from PM thinks me.... Nope, that's because he has moved an AC TF down to provide LRCAP over the landing site! My bombers magically realise there is CAP and don't go. Thank God I kept my CV's in the barn! The other transport TF above Buna is again scouted, it is above Buna still, this goes with a Coastwatcher sighting of a DD in harbour during the night. Have I mistakenly scouted the AP's form the previous day as APD's? They are only 2 hexes above Buna and FT missions come form further afield - fuel problems?? Who knows, anyway it is a moot point as PM doesn't strike the TF.

a couple of raids of Rufes over PM - P39's go up but they are ships in the night. Maybe he was just getting experience for them?

So, what does this mean? Looks like he is serious about gili and I am unsure as to what to do. With air cover the gili force will probably be immune from PM attacks. However, if the AC TF is LRCAPing the invasion hex it isn't CAPing itself - window for AC TF attack? Or do I look to send in a surface force? He has some DD's guarding the transports - experience tells me that the DD's are the targets and it is unusual to hit the transports; more importantly the time it will take to get a surface group up there will mean the troops will have disembarked anyway. This of course goes over and above the fact any combat damage - like a mine or torpedo hit - is likely to slow a retreating warship down to the point the AC TF hammers it when the sun comes up.

My Carriers are not loaded with planes and pilots yet, and I still have the F4F-3s rather than 4s. Also making my AC TF strike just the invasion hex and not the enemy carriers will be an exercise in control. The problem of course being, I can hardly control my own fleet - when the keep wanting to react (even with react off!) - let alone control where his will be. I have to be prepared for a possible CV battle. It will also take time to get the TF into position - again the troops will be off so i am just looking to hit empty troop ships.

I am leaning towards giving him the base. I have very little on the base (engineers without their vehicles) I can always congregate what subs I have in the area where I think his AC TF is likely to go and also line up for the retreat of the transports.

As always comments welcome, I also have the luxury of not having done my turn yet, so I can act on the best ideas!
Check it out 5 stars!!!

wobbly -> (4/30/2003 6:27:41 PM)

OK, so after all my twiddling of toes and wondering what the hell to do I got back to my turn to notice the DD's returning from the FT mission. Each has over 3000 fuel and are still within one sprint of Gili so I changed their mission and turned them around. I can't remember the leader I had but he was chosen for caution and that saves a few rounds shot at the landing force that the japs have positioned at Gili. However we do manage to sink 2 ships and put a few holes in 2 others.

Attack Condor -> So you wanna be in charge...? (5/2/2003 3:54:48 AM)

All I would suggest is if you are in fact unsure about defending GG and/or PM then get out of there ASAP. Halfway defensive measures leave units all the way dead.

In my game vs. Quark, I am holding onto PM and GG, but it took a commitment from the first turn to do so along with a slick move to keep GG from falling and then building it up to where it is a real threat to anything afloat sailing within its "kill zone" - and even with all of that it took a lucky hit on his CV providing LRCAP for the invasion helped even the odds. With the defensive factors of "non-combatant" troops raised via patch 2.30, the task of defending NG is a little easier, but the real key is not how many troops are there, it's how long can you keep them in "bread and bullets".

As I said, it can be done, but don't fall into the trap that the US moves are easier early on because they "don't have to invade anything". FWIW I think of my supply TFs as invasions in and amongst themselves, and plan to defend them as if they were gold.

They are :)

Welcome to command! ;)

wobbly -> (5/2/2003 6:53:28 AM)

Gidday guys (and girls in the minority I guess). No turn update today although Herbie looks like he has updated his info. I am away from my home PC and its game so I have no info to give - still have internet access though.
Back at home tomorrow.

Attack Condor; I so hear you, I am having kittens worrying about my gamble in "operation back-passage". A hell of alot depends upon supply and my level of commitment.

Worrying issues:

1. Taking enemy bases.

2. Supply of Kanga force and any other airlifted units into the bases forward of Wau.

3. Providing aircover for the air supply.

4. Getting the boys out again - if the need arises as I am pretty sure it will. Especially as my plan is to NOT commit to PM.

Ponderings:

1. My initial intentions - mainly due to previous advice during this campaign; was to take Nadzab, it is right next to Lae and will provide greater consternation for Herbie. However, if Kanga doesn't take either of the bases in between Wau and Nadzab, wont the overland supplies be restricted (for reference I have gone inland)?

If so, then Kanga needs to take the base to allow the supplies through. Obvious this will give away the plan and Herbie will likely move a unit to Nadzab for defence - something Kanga will not be able to overcome.

A question then: and this is very gamey. Can Kanga take the inland base (name alludes me) while half way on the march to Nadzab? You can have engineers build bases on the move. If so, will it reset the movement of the marching force, defeating the purpose.

Obviously I could just airlift another force into Wau and march them to the inland base - but more troops require more supplies. Which leads me nicely onto problem 2.

2. Supplying all these troops. If I don't intend on keeping PM, which is my intention, all these troops and aircraft are going to require air supply (ouch - very hard), once PM has fallen. So I don't want to be sending more troops than are absolutely necessary.

3. So, if I am air supplying I need to defend my air transports. More fighters, more supply required. This is getting out of hand!

4. So now I want to get everyone out, means I have to base some C-49's there, something I saw coming, but again is upping the commitment, and the scary question I come up with next is: what is my goal? How could I instigate this without having a clear goal?

Some advisors have put forward the actual capture of Lae: with added defence capacity of support units, this will require a couple of battalions (I would have though) without their heavy guns too!

Others have said I can use my P-39's from Nadzab to Naval attack TF's going to LAE (he doesn't appear to be slow transport supplying it) or air attacking Lae itself.

Personally I am leaning on it being more of a pain in the backside for him while he tries to take PM, so much so, that he may fail. In which case should I be trying to hold PM - arrgggghhh this is impossible :D

To add fruit to the mix, I don't know whether airlifting and air supply has the capacity to pull this off.

What a fun game :) :) :)

Attack Condor -> So you wanna be in charge...? (pt. 2) (5/2/2003 9:12:25 AM)

Don't count on the Dakotas to provide much in the way of supply... I've run tests between PM and Buna with a full squadron of C47s (16 aircraft) with fatigue <10 on a supply mission and a grand total of 80 supplies arrived. I re-ran the turn with the same results.

80 :rolleyes:

FWIW, I'm using the transports for just troop movements. 80 might be fine for a recon team (of course, recon teams usually don't go where there are "unoccupied" level 1 airfields), but even if the only unit at the base is the BF unit, it will eat almost 80 supplies a day on its own. Add the fact that as soon as a "fresh" C47 unit gets wind of having to fly a supply mission of more than 3 hexes, it gains 40+ fatigue! lol

And you're right about things spiraling out of control if you aren't careful. You haven't even addressed the fatigue your troops will rack up on their tour of the IJN bases.

If you want to abandon NG and bide your time ubntil you are stronger, check out my thoughts in the early posts of my AAR with Grotius "Do Condors Eat Sushi?".

Just one more piece of advice for you to mull over :)

wobbly -> (5/4/2003 3:21:20 PM)

Herbie and I have managed to coordinate a few turns this weekend - amazing considering i wasn't at home for most of the weekend - it's a sod when work gets in the way of your addiction!
Anyway, the japs are coordinating the offloading their troops at Gili and that looks to be almost over bar writing the last stanza's. However, his CV group that was guarding the landings - situated south of Gili - has now moved north again. this means I have put together a SC TF under Lee to try a little snipe at any remnants at Gili, realistically I think it is a little too late.
I have a problem with my F4F-3's they of course haven't converted to 4's - d@mn the marines :) - but I also have 17 3's in stock that aren't being released to my current squadrons. I'll have to wait and see.
Operation "back-passage" looks in tempestuous straights! Obviously any loss of any of the bases in-between the forward troops and PM, puts the front troops out of supply. I have also had to fly extra troops in to take the base in-between Nadzab and Wau - again for supply reasons. I am going to continue to make him worry about the taking of PM. I know he is LRCAPing gili - I sent recon, so the itchy trigger finger is on the "release the CV hounds". Not without my fighters though...

wobbly -> (5/5/2003 5:13:57 PM)

I'll pass on the combat report, just a bomb run against buna and more passes over PM with his Rufes.
However, there is a plethora of targets above New Guinea. He is also setting himself up to take the islands south of Lunga (can't remember the name). His CV's are still north of Gili.
In more important news, Lee is within strike distance of Gili and there is still a TF in port.
Now, I expect him to have a surface force on react and he obviously has his CV's ready. hope I get away with it - have a nasty feeling about mines!
My CV's have fleshed out their compliment of F4F-3's but they are in need of repair and they don't have pilots. I am heavily contemplating moving them against the larger Buna landing about to happen. Next turn - if he is still north they will sortie and head east south east of PM, try and hit him with only the Dauntlesses. Gaud I hate the windindicators!

Stay Tuned!

wobbly -> (5/7/2003 6:52:44 AM)

Dan Curruthers diary updated.

Nothing much happening of much interest. I torpedoed one of the retreating Gili TF's ships.
My Air Combat TF has put to sea.

he still has his carrier north of Buna and is going to invade the dot hex next to buna (can't remember the name).

wobbly -> Whether the weather is kind... (5/8/2003 3:55:55 AM)

As you may have noted there was noone home for the surface fleet to tangle with at Gili. The returning fleet was set to intercept the new AC TF heading up towards PM. This fleet - 21 ships strong, built around Lex and Yorktown - is set to no react no retreat, with a target hex 7 hexes south of Dobadura. The main problem is the weather - we have thunderstorms. I could back off and mask the fact I am on this side of the Coral Sea or continue with the attack. Unfortunately the target wont stay there until the weather clears up, so I am praying for clear spots! His AC TF is still in the vacinity, it has parked 5 hexes North of Dobadura. I should be able to launch a strike against the ships at dobadura without his carriers attacking mine - unless he has react on that is! In case of this the AC TF is set to 70 and 80 CAP on both fighter sqds and all planes Naval attack. The weather is the kicker.
In other news, the DD's I noticed on the beach below Lae had indeed been bringing troops. A small naval garrison or some such. This could be a major problem for operation "back passage". Do I need to send still more ground troops in!!!!

Kanga force has made it to Nadzab. Unfortunately the japs have covered their bases in that regard and moved an infantry unit there. Kanga is bombarding this turn to get me some info on who they are. It does however look like operation "back passage" is a failure.
As you will notice, by the combat report, my CV TF was socked in; this was no real surprise. However, I have taken the incredibly foolhardy approach of keeping the CV's there for another turn. Here is my thinking: unfortunately my TF was scouted - however the report only mentioned a CA and 2 DD's; I may yet be un-noticed. We are on separate sides of NG: therefore a strike that injures my carriers will be unlikely to sink them. I am in close proximity to PM - therefore have a base for homeless planes to get to. I have also closed the gap on his TF by 1 hex. he has stayed parked in the same position for 4 turns - if he stays again he will still be out of range - I will have a crack at his dobadura force, if he moves in he will not get a range 10 unanswerable strike at me.
Next turn they retreat no matter what!

Kanga is up against 2 garrison units. Therefore it is retreating back the way it came. I'll instigate a retreat as best I can. I will likely have to move the C-49s and some fighters in to extricate everyone.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

wobbly -> (5/11/2003 5:15:37 PM)

Well after finding Nadzab defended things have changed. The Japs have managed to get a unit to Wau at the same time as the unit I had at Wau moved on to Marilinan. This of course means I could have the line of supply cut. So there is only one course open, and Herbie knows this - the dakotas are met over Wau by marauding Zeros; but the post gets through, the Aussies are ready for the Japs and they hold the base.
The Long Island puts to sea from Noumea with a small detachment of DD's and on board are the marine wildcat squadron. See how he likes them over PM.
The majority of the surface units split from the Air TF and return to Cairns - their new home - Dan Curruthers among them. The Air TF continues - unscouted now - on to Koumac then Luganville (which is now level 3 so can semi hide their location). His carriers are scouted at shortland.

Allied forces CAPTURE Marilinan base !!!

This reduced unit is returning to Wau. Even if this hasn;t been a perfect success it has definately caught his attention. He has not managed to provide enough troops to capture the locations and if he has to deviate some units this has been a success!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

wobbly -> (5/12/2003 5:02:11 PM)

Wau is no longer allied real estate. I was under the delusion the hastily flown in aussies would hold - no dice. They retreat to Marilian and join their compatriots there. I will make this the base of operations in regard to getting them out.

Pearl will not release Enterprise despite her being there. She is intergral to plans so things better change.

There is some naval activity at Buna and Lae, also the Goyo Maru, previously bombed by the PM forces and Mitscher, seccumbs to her wounds.

I am moving the NZ def force, 1 batt of troops and a base force to Luganville - along with 5 tankers of fuel. however, I envisage doing alot of surface action against his PM task force (assuming he creates one) so I am sending 4 tankers to Townsville as well. These tankers will serve Oz.

Little else of interest, Herbie is complaining of a lack of troops - no doubt you all know more of this than me! So maybe such an attack could be a fair way off. These variable settings have really thrown the cat amongst the pigeons - for instance argonaut is 200 days from Pearl!

Hagaru Maru sinks. There is a TF at Lae bolstering troops stolen to stop the kanga force. He has another transport TF between Gili and woodlark island: I don't know its direction - so it could be going to woodlark from the west or to gili from the east.

So far 13 ships to one S class sub sunk. I have twice the air losses and 17 troop points as opposed to his 5; but I am not too worried about how things are going at present.
Enterprise is still not being released! (commitment is still high).

wobbly -> (5/15/2003 5:44:05 AM)

Things were again quiet this turn: more sweeps over PM by Rufes - they do nothing; and more surprising 2 sub attacks in Brisbane harbour! He hits one medium AP with 1 torp (doing a hell of alot of damage actually) and misses with the next run - only PG's and SC's defending so no hits in reply.
More importantly 2 TF's of cruisers are heading towards PM - I think this is the opening of the PM invasion. Herbie has sent me an email to say 2 whole divisions are on the way. Even with variable I can't imagine them being 2 complete divisions. If they are then he has been feeding me misinformation for some time about his lack of troops! Far more likely he has the 38th and a hodge podge of the other battalions.

PM has only 1 infantry batt - 2 divisions will roast that! My subs are being recalled to the Gili straight, unfortunately I have been very remiss in keeping their fuel stocks up and most are down to a few more days on station; they may have to return to PM first.

I put all my surface forces still on the Aussie coast into a suface TF under Lee - they move towards PM with orders to react (on memory I have snaffu-ed again and left them with retire orders - doh). My thinking here is - I am likely to suffer some ships damaged but so is he. From previous experience it is far better to suffer damage close to your own ports than close to his. Ships that I damage will be open for air attack from PM. If CA's are all that he is sending he wont close PM down. The A-24's and Blenheims - my best anti naval weapons - are back to about 55 morale so may have to go to PM for a little hunting. My carriers are on the wrong side of the map so they can't help. We have other plans for them anyway!

As an aside - I can't wait to get home (a new turn is ready)- herbie no doubt has written in his AAR if a surface action happened - can someone at least tell me if Lee reacted?

wobbly -> (5/16/2003 6:40:02 AM)

Dan Curruthers diary updated - 28th - 30th May

The first turn herbie has really struck back - caught with my trousers around my ankles!! My intention, as stated before, was to move Lee up and have him react to an invasion - or more likely a bombardment TF. Unfortunately his Carriers had managed to sneak up to the Gili straight and then through it during the night. My TF was too far to the west and was caught. This does fill me with a little chagrin because I had completely intended to stay close to the Aussie coast in case of an Air TF in the vacinity, then got greedy - I hoped to pick the location of an invasion TF and do a sprint to that location and back - as it passed through the Gili straights.

The Minneapolis, Australia , Farragut and Walke sink outright. Everyone else bar Monaghan has damage - the New Orleans is in a very bad way. The Chicago and Chester team up and hope to return, so too do Hobart and Aylwyn.
Everyone can do 5/2 movement or better except New Orleans. My plans if you can call anything from here a plan, is to cover the two 2 ship tfs with 2 sqds of LRCAP and leave the poor New Orleans as aircraft bait - hope it attracts most of the strikes as an easy target. Subs are another thing entirely - the ships are that badly damaged a torpedo will likely finish them.
Unfortunately i haven't really hurt his air groups either so - all in all very disappointing.

wobbly -> (5/17/2003 7:25:45 AM)

Dan Curruthers diary updated - 30 and 31 May - as an aside - is this a usable format? In other words do you go back to read it or just the combat report?

I can't get PM open again to get the aircraft grounded there out! In the past It has been possible but Herbie is throwing masses of little bombardment TF's at the place and they are all adding up. Supplies down to 8,500 and the airfield is 72 percent damaged.

72 sorties of level bombers against his invasion force and only one hit. However a certain destroyer captain's heroics may allow them to bomb slightly slower ships!

This turn my Air combat Tf will get in range of Lunga - he has AP's and TK's unloading there so I hope to make a mess. I have to worry about newly released carriers at Shortland reacting, but nothing ventured nothing gained.

Speaking of carriers, I now have Enterprise AND Saratoga sitting in Pearl gathering dust - get those 2 sent to me and that will be 5!! Then we may start to give Herb a real bloody nose.

I have never seen a single ship - especially considering its size - fight so well. Talk about punch above your weight!! The remaining MSW and a PG both had a massive explosion "extra damage" occurance.

In other news all the remaining ships from the air attack debarcle have made it to port! Was so sure I would loose more. The final tally was 2 cruisers - New Orleans and Australia, 1 Cl - Hobart, and 2 DD's (I mistakenly report Minneapolis sunk - FOW AAR style :) - in fact for 8 torpedo hits it only has 43 system damage! I also quoted Walke as being sunk - as you can see it is very much still afloat!). Of course this is a little early to count chickens, a port attack could sink some and they all still have hefty flotation damage; they also have to get back to Noumea, but things are looking up.

wobbly -> (5/19/2003 3:31:37 PM)

PM gets back into action as no air or bombardment attacks are made. I have decided to retire the air groups while I can - 45 planes are still on the ground broken.
Alot of sub attacks and I loose another sub - he has been so effective here. I have another surface group pulling into Cairns - 1 CA, 1 Cl and 4 DD's. Not much with BB's about but I don't want him to get away with an easy conquest of PM. His CV's have moved back above NG so sneaking in on a day raid may again be an option. He no longer has a surface group at PM but another is sneaking through Gili. Unfortunately my main defence - subs - are taking a pounding, 2 more arriving on station though.
I have moved 4 DD's to the top of the barrier reef - orders patrol and react - we will see if the react during daylight.

First attack on PM and it's a cracker. He has 1 to 1 odds already and that was with a deliberate attack. The fortifications save me this round but next round he may assault and I think it will be goodbye PM.

A question to some knowledgable general - I looked at the base and it has a fortification percentage of 104%????? What does that mean?

A small ray of sunshine is the fact he did not take Lea lea so I have somewhere to retreat to.

37 planes left on PM field. Can I just hold out long enough to get a few more of these out of dodge.

The operation to evacuate the troops from Marilinan has begun, again I hope PM can hold out for a bit while that goes on - all distractions would be helpful. I forgot weather - thunderstorms next turn so maybe I will get a reprieve from air attack.

As you can see not much happening. Herbie forgot to attack with all his battalions so I think PM will fall this turn - 27 planes left.
Most of the Kanga force is out - mainly support troops left. Moving 14th aussie batt this turn. Then rest the planes.

Herb has a small surface fleet of 3 CLs and 2 DD's moving to PM - I am sending 2 TF's 1 with 4DD's and 1 DMS (there are mines) and one with 1 CA 1 CL and 4 DD's. If the DD's get there first it could be carnage for them - but they might light up the CLs for the larger TF. If the larger TF gets there first they might get torpedoed to death and the DD's included - this new TF is brand new and has rubbish night experience. If it comes off though there is a plethora of transport ships for the TF's to get amongst.

His surface target turns out to be Lae Lae. I had grown complacent and thought that he might not take the place. He has deposited an 808 man naval unit there. Just to be a fly in the ointment I am going to move some of Cairns troops into Lae Lae via PBY. It should be enough to hold Lae Lae against one of these little units.
18 planes still left in PM - amazingly the place held again although we are at 2-1 odds now. No more fortification. However, if he is getting his timing right I would think he would want to take Lae Lae first before assaulting PM otherwise I might still hold it - leaving a retreat option.
All of the aussie 4th (except 2 AT guns) is now out of Marilinan - I am going to keep going while the going is good - moving rest of Kanga this turn.
The retiring ships of the 2 surface TF's are going to advance again to likely locations of the retiring transport TF (it is going through gili straights this turn - unless he turns around). 3 hexes are targeted, 2 with 2 DD's, 1 with 4 DD's and a CL. Can only try.

PM's days just have to be numbered, the aussie Batt there is slowly getting more and more dismembered. However, they have done me a great service with 8 aircraft remaining at PM.

All of the troops bar 2 AT guns and 4 air service squads are out of Marilinan - the dakotas bug out leaving 5 behind - we'll see if the pittance of service remaining will rebuild them.

Bit stuck as to ideas now. Have sent a transport TF with an air base unit and 1 see bee unit.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/10/42

Weather: Overcast

Well there it is - sweet FA to report. Hornet is now in the fold and she goes into dock at Noumea.
I have update the diary.
I am starting FT missions to PM to try and withdraw some of the troops. Starting with the engineering batt I flew and FT'd in earlier. I have noticed his CA's retreating towards Rabaul.
He has 2 subs of Cairns and 1 in PM harbour so this is taking the DD's in FT for granted. If they get shot hopefully they will also manage a shot back.

As those of you following this little disagreement between Herbie and I will now know, he pulled a fast one on me!
Managed to sneak a CV TF down to within striking distance of Noumea. There was nothing at Noumea but there sure was something at Wunpuko - my TF unloading construction engineers and their supplies. Never saw him coming and didn't have LRCAP allocated so he hammers the TF.
Assessing the damage after the encounter shows 1 sunk transport and one sunk SC. I had to scuttle one other transport and another is very unhappy and unlikely to make it to Luganville. 2 others are lightly damaged and should make Luganville. The last 2 are undamaged - and here is where luck shined on me as 1 of these actually held troops so is spared. I will continue to unload.

So, what to do? The obvious temptation is to make a CV TF and go at him. Managed to over-ride that and instead transfer 2 F4F-3 sqds and 3 dauntless sqds from the carriers to Luganville. I doubt he will come much closer but if he does they will hopefully retaliate.
The P-39's already at Luganville go on LRCAP over Wunpuko.
3 more tranport TF's were on their way to Wunpuko, Luganville and Efate. these are smartly turned out to sea - with patrol orders - and sent in the opposite direction from the enemy CV's.

In other news the Minneapolis makes it to Noumea and is sent to Pearl.
