Riitaoja2 -> What if SPWAW had a more realistic 10m hex scale (3/24/2016 6:44:54 PM)

So I was thinking how would SPWAW look if all the hexes were 10m instead of 50m and all the graphics were in a more realistic scale. Also instead of just having ~50x50 pixels per hex we would have ~100x100 pixels. This would give more pixels to work with for the pixel artists.

I came up with this simulated screenhsot:

This is ofcouse just a fantasy and would need whole new game engine. But it does show how the game could have looked if they would make it today with higher resolution and still utilizing the 2d top down graphics.

But a pipe dream, I'm sad to admit.

I would love it, as long as you could zoom out far enough to see as much (or more) of the battlefield as we see in the game now.

That goes without saying JEB! [;)] A smooth zoom with mouse wheel to any zoom level you like.

But yes this is just me dreaming. [:D]

And one could do alot more with that simulated screenshot. I was just lazy and used already available SPWAW graphics with the exception of the T-26 (taken from a top down detailed color drawing I Googled). With a 32-bit color palette the sky is the limit!

I just love 2d graphics so much. You have complete control with every single pixel and there is always the potential to make even completely photorealistic graphics. For a top down turn based game like SPWAW it is the best choice always.

Sadly many people today think that 3D is the only way to go...

So let's hope that Steel Tigers (or whatever name will be) could include that scale in future[;)]...

To avoid any confusion:

- It's using hexes.
- The engine is much more advanced compared to STUB (BA/BA2/P&S/Hell/Jidai), it just uses some of the same paradigms internally.

I appreciate that in the absence of real information people will create some, but... [;)]

Cheers

That was just posted in the General Discussion about Steel Tigers. Very exciting! [sm=00000289.gif]

Steel Tigers?
we worked on that game years ago, then they shelved it with no explanation
did they start working on it again?

Wargamer article from June 2015:
http://www.wargamer.com/news/slitherine-to-stop-making-games/
quote:

... it was mentioned that the first game to use this engine will be called Steel Tigers and is being developed by 2 by 3 Games (i.e. Gary Grigsby, Joel Billings and Keith Brors). The name is also intriguing as it suggests we will be looking at a “spiritual successor” (to use the over used phrase) of Steel Panthers …

And since then it has been mentioned here on Matrix games forum at least in these threads:

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3885806

EDIT:

Not sure if Steel Tigers will be the actual name of the new game or if it is just a working title.

Great idea. I would be happy if it was. And destructible trees.
