Started playing my first game a few weeks ago and started with default settings set to Easy. I wanted to have fun and learn the game.

I set the time to as slow as it would go and to be honest I think it is the best setting. Gives me time to think!!! and handle each situation as time allows. I don't feel in much of a hurry to do anything now.

At first I was ahead of one empire and they gradually pulled slightly ahead of me. So I checked my victory conditions and what I need to do was colonize as much as possible and build fleets as much as possible. Error corrected.

Gradually I pulled ahead of the other powers and was the strongest military power and my policy was to pay the pirates to keep them off my back but take out their bases when I could and maintain the peace as much as possible. In other words, no war which by the way was one of my victory conditions. Declare war the least.

Eventually I needed room to grow I planted some colonies between my main rival colonies which forced him to fly fleets through my territory. Turned the colonies into fortresses and piled in the fleets to those bases. I refused my adviser's advice to declare war.

Then my fleets just attacked their bases on their own and a war started. I know how the Japanese leadership felt when their armies attacked China without their consent. Since I was the dominate military power I let the war run for awhile till I took a significant part of their empire and paid to stop the war.

My taste for blood had been aroused. After making myself overwhelming I sent the fleets off to war and ignored the pirates. Most of my main rival's empire is gone and is part of mine.

My empire follows the Way of the Ancients (formally a democracy but discoveries allowed me to have a revolution and change my form of government). My former rival followed the Way of Darkness which made us natural enemies.

Love the game. It is all I want in a computer game. Played last night till 4:30 AM. My only complaint is it is not in a window so I need to stop the game to check email, etc...

interesting situation, do you have the intention to continue with this AAR when you will resume DW playing ?

Nice little recap.

I believe you can make the game windowed by removing the 's that are comments in the Startup.ini. Set the desired resolution.

When I play, I have a second monitor, and I have never had any issues writing AARs on the other screen as I play, and take my screenshots with a screen grab tool. Of course, this is better done while paused. That is without doing anything in Startup.ini.

By the year 2200 give or take a few years I had defeated and absorbed my main rival the Ackdarian to become the supreme power in the universe and the game was won. In essence, I controlled a quarter of the known galaxy.

But I had noticed a new group which due to their name I gave a pass on the ?? Refugees. I began to notice their military power had grown and after a short war I was leary of getting into war with them even though I was at least twice as strong as they were. Eventually around 2220 we entered into a semi-hot war but we had not declared war with each other. I was attacking some of their bases and just had a big battle with one of their fleets in my territory. Whether I wanted a war or not I am in a galaxy wide war. The Refugees have been unmasked as the Shakturi. But a powerful ally, The Ancient Guardians, who have stayed out of the affairs of the galaxy have come to our aide and the Grand Alliance has reformed as more powers join in the war.

The fate of the Galaxy hangs in the balance.

I have found the game absolutely addicting.

Served during Vietnam era.

I just bought over 600K in credits for more ships and I have been doing this over and over just to keep even with my loses against the Shakturi.

Glad I got a hefty computer. I doubt a lightweight could handle the game.

Now I am over 600K in the red but my cash flow is 1,017,745 without the bonus income so I will be in the green shortly.

Thoughts on this war of attrition against the Shaktur.

I have been at this for about 4 years of game time currently it is 2214. Micro managing the war is out and it is strictly let the AI on both sides fight it out. My job is to keep the ships flowing, and to keep the AI from starting a war with someone else. One galaxy wide war at a time.

I am judging success on what military strength the two main protagonist have and my strength has gone up while the Shaktur have gone down. At some point the slow downward spiral should accelerate. Plus, I keep track of how many colonies the Shakturi have. They are down significantly. Put the two together and you have a slow recipe for victory.

One thing I do not like is that I have become the primary armorer of the Shaktur. They seem to be able to board my ships almost at will and capture them. Without that ability this war would probably be over.

Shakturi have been eliminated by 2220 if memory serves me correct. Their last colony was a tough nut to crack so I gave it the old planetary bombardment from my capital ships to finish them off. They may have a fleet lurking somewhere but I haven't seen it.

Now the Ancient Guardian's, my former allies in the Shakturi war, have decided the galaxy is not big enough for the both of us and I am in another war of attrition. Again my job is to shovel out the ships and let the AI manage the fighting. I did make peace with all of the Ancient Guardian allies so it is just him and me.

I have been checking the number of colonies and military strengths to get a feel on how the war is going. The Ancient Guardians number of colonies are up but so are mine. The important thing is the military strength of both of us. The Ancient Guardian's are down about 25% while I am up about the same. I got over 6 million credits in the bank and plenty of income.

Keep playing as long as you find it fun. Judging by military power does probably make good sense, although in at least "early" game it can be misleading by having lots of firepower on medium+ spaceports at quite some distance from the front.

About the second to last post, I believe what you can do to defend against boarding is upping your own boarding strength. Habitation modules and boarding pods is what should increase this measure, so that would be the stuff to add.

The game was won after about 47 years had passed but I played on.

Shakturi were a tough bunch but with the help of the Ancient Guardian's and the rest of the empires in the galaxy they were defeated. I subjected their last colony to a planetary bombardment but unfortunately the Ancient Guardian's sneaked in and claimed the planet. I was to pay dearly for that later.

Later the Ancient Guardian's decided the galaxy wasn't big enough for the both of us. They ended up being exterminated which changed my reputation to Evil but I was so powerful now that others were seeking to be protectorates.

Most of the galaxy is mine now and no one is a threat anymore so the game is over. Had a blast...

PS.

Started my second game and I am about ready to drop it after playing it for a couple of days.

First I was randomly started in the middle of the galaxy surrounded by just about every other empire. For some reason the colony ships were almost all constructed at one place and since I had 14 colonies to expand into it I was getting ships drip by drip. My only hope of getting out of the box I was in was to expand between one of the other empires but every system eventually was occupied while I waited on my drip by drip colony ships.

Now it is fight if I want to expand or quit the game and since I do not play this to fight wars (at least this early in the game) I guess I will start over.

Next time if I see that I have a couple of empires within 2 systems of my home system I am going to drop the game right away.
