I can see how to fill in the boxes on the LOS box that comes up . A bit cumbersome as I would prefer to just click on a hex and see what they can't see greyed out perhaps. However, I have noticed that when you do select a friendly unit you can see enemy units with a red hexside around them when you have LOS selected. Not sure what this means (FOW disabled). I only ask as I am in scenario 1, on easy, and absolutely everyone is Broken by turn 5! I thought I was hiding behind the orchards! (I've read up on that now hence I am a interested in LOS mechanics)

I believe the red hex side indicates that it is the line of sight of at least one enemy unit (during enemy turn) or in the case you describe in the LOS of the friendly unit you selected. It does not necessarily mean however that it is in the range of fire of that unit. With FOW (Fog of War) disabled you can see all units even if not in any LOS but the red hex sides will appear when one is.

Here's a nice video to help you visualize what some of the terrain looks like from it's map icon:

The actual ASL rulebook has very helpful line drawn images showing what each hex looks like in profile.

The TotH manual has text descriptions of the terrain hexes under the Objects section of the manual talking about the editor and a terrain effects chart in the appendix, but no images of what the hexes look like "for real".

As Yogi says there are two LOS tools. The LOS Tool is the one that when you click on a hex it will highlight possible target hexes in red for you.

The second is the cumbersome popup where you have to remember the two hex IDs and type them in to get another cumbersome popup telling you if there's LOS or not.
