Fall has magic in the air....

Fall colors are always present but the green pigments the others.

Chlorophyll, which gives leaves their basic green color.
Carotenoids, which produce yellow, orange, and brown colors
Anthocyanins, which produce red, purples .

Weather's influence on fall's colors

USAAF B-25 sinks Japanese destroyer Amatsukaze off the coast of Xiamen China 6 April 1945

[image]local://upfiles/55056/F6CD8C1D913545289EF9E3F9C55061F5.jpg[/image]

The DD is misidentified. Amatsukaze was a Kagero class DD with a twin 5" turret forward and two aft. That ship looks like a Matsu class - essentially a DE.

MakeeLearn -> RE: OT Things to ponder (11/19/2016 8:07:14 PM)

A Japanese Kaibokan escort ship

Good catch. seems to be mislabeled in alot of the pics of it. Amatsukaze was in the same attack and was beached.

B-25 Mitchell, nicknamed Ruthless Ruth, pulls up after making a skip-bombing run on Japanese coastal defense vessel No. 134. The plane was flown by USAAF Lieutenant Louie A. Mikell of the 499th Bomb Squadron (Bats Outa Hell), part of 5th Air Force. Japanese convoy HOMO-03 left Hong Kong enroute to Shanghai, consisting of subchasers CH-9 and CH-20, destroyer Amatsukaze, Kaibokan (escort destroyers) Coastal Defense Vessels No. 1 and No. 134, Tokai Maru Number 2 and Kine Maru on April 4, 1945.

No, Toto is a Japanese brand of toilets. I don't know how BBfanboy knows what brand of toilet Lecivius has or what he's seen in it. [&:]

No, no - you guys have it all wrong. I was referring to the pages Toto ate out of the book! No worries though, they will appear eventually.

I like this photo. I like trying to guess where it might be. It's not the American west, given the proliferation of underbrush and hardwood trees. It's a rocky riverbed (not the deep soil of the coastal plain). The larger tree with the pronounced crooks, angled over the river from the left bank appears to be sycamore, which is common in the eastern United States, especially in the Ohio, Mississippi and Tennessee River basins. There is enough relief (hillside) on the left to indicate this probably isn't the bottomlands of a major river or in the prairie regions. There are no pines at all, suggestion (but not conclusive) that this isn't the southern Appalachian region.

My guess would be Ozarks or middle Appalachian region, including Maryland, West Virginia, southeastern Ohio, Pennsylvania.

Aldo Leopold could probably pinpoint the county. I might be half a world off. :)

Very close. This pic doesnt do it justice as the water is usually very green due to the rock bottom. Ridge to the left, rolling bottoms to the right. The river turns north here. Near the Tennessee/Alabama line.

In the center - Grumman Martlet
In the front: Vought Corsair
Up front: Supermarine Seafire

I just had a Thanksgiving experience that may be atypical from what I've heard. Many people present voted one way in this past election and many others voted the other way including in some cases opposite of their spouses. No blood was spilt. We talked about anything but politics and we talked about fun stuff that amused everyone.

Here's a first for me, a Carolina Wren. It's vibrating so much all the pics I took are a bit blurred. The feeder is in perfect focus. That blur on the right is a female House Finch.

I watched the fog roll in this morning. First one streetlight off towards the river, then the next, then the next and so forth.
