There is no totally reliable way to know the odds before combat. But there are a few rules of thumb. The obvious is that you compare your total Attacking CVs to the displayed enemy CV. But be aware that the displayed enemy CV is just a guess, the actual CV may be more or less. But theses CVs are just your starting CVs and during combat there are many factors that can effect the final CVs including: 1. Making or failing leader checks, 2. Combat losses, 3. Disorganization caused by interdiction, 4. Loss of fortifications (for the defender only), 5. Reserve unit activations. As you play the game and gain experience you will learn a few of the trick to judge what you need to make a safe attack. But I think you will find that, generally speaking, if you attack with starting CV odds of 2:1 you will win 90% of your battles. A unit displaying 6-12 means it has a CV of 6 and 12 MPs. A unit displaying 6:12, means that it has an attacking CV of 6 and a defending CV of 12. By pressing "z" you can toggle what your friendly units displays. Enemy units always display the attacking and defending CVs.
