A S-400, whose missiles have a max alt of 38km, fired at some Scud's 86nm away that were at 46km and still ascending. When the SA-21b's reached them the Scuds had an alt of 71km. I found that a costly waste of ammo and thought I would report it just in case it isn't WAD. ;)

Hmmmm yeah, the S-400 takes a lead shot against the SCUDs to try to score an early kill.

Are too many cases where this would make sense so don't want to change this functionality I think...

I would suggest you set the WRA for ballistic missiles to not fire at targets beyond 40nm or so [8D]

Tried it here and worked fine.

WRA is a really really powerful tool. Use it! [:D]

Yup, I love WRA, it is really awesome :) It just can be annoying having to "reprogram" units in existing scenarios, but that's certainly not your problem as devs. But at least we HAVE a way to influence the AI, unlike in 99.99% of the other games.

"Re programming" units is not annoying. Its part of the game. Part of the game is about planning and making sure your units are doing what you want. Scenario designers most likely don't want to have to figure out how a user wants to set doctrine for a player. WRA is part of doctrine.

I know for someone who is just looking to find bugs, its annoying. Again, my suggestion is learn how to play the game the right way. Its not a shoot 'em up where you open a scenario and just blast away. It takes as much time setting up display configurations, doctrine, missions, RTBs, and WRA as it does to play the game. If you don'y like "re=programming" units. You are, again, playing the wrong game.

You are right, good point.

I'd guess S-400 thinks that at the time of intercept, the target will be in the envelope for a missile, no? Because actual intercept happens much later than launch? I did observe similar effects when aircraft are engaging inbound targets farther out than missile max range, and by the time missile travels to target, target is already inside the missile range. With the aircraft and AIMs, this works perfectly.

Hi Guys. Go into WRA's and adjust the firing range if you don't like it doing that.

Mike

Yes and yes. That why I was reluctant as first to report it. I assume a RL radar operator would have figured that it doesn't make sense to launch missiles against the Scuds at this moment, but Command simply isn't RL. Fortunately it gives us unprecedented ways to influence the AI, well, at least I would be surprised if there ever was or ever will be another game that comes even close to the level of possible AI customisation. It is simply fantastic.

Couldnīt agree more. My biggest thrill is figuring out how to handle a given situation with the resources at hand, and I almost never use the "standard" WRA and EMCON etc. settings.

I micromanage to the extreme, some like to automate everything, this SIM does it all exactly because it is NOT "pre-programmed" to a set of doctrines.

If I screw up itīs my own fault. Not the devs or the scen designer.

If all units behavior where fixed it wouldnīt be much fun (or realistic), and it would give me the excuse that:

"I couldnīt win this scen because the scen designer/Devs made it this way" and that is just to easy.

Well thatīs my 0.02$

Its not even about micromanagement. Just like in real life, you have to start the game look at your objectives, build a plan, build missions to execute the plan, and then make sure unit orders are set so they can succeed at the mission. In large scenarios especially, its more work than playing the game. And you have to play a leader in several levels sometimes.

ComDev -> RE: [B811] S-400 fires at targets above its missiles max altitude (4/10/2016 6:17:19 AM)

And at some point it is just impossible to write code for AI logics because country-specific and also scenario-specific doctrines start kicking in. Oh and then there's the little thing with player preferences hehe.

I believe the combination of Doctrine options, Event engine, and Lua scripts is extremely powerful and will allow you to achieve just about anything [:D]

You sort of got it backwards :)

I do very much like it doing that. The rest was an explanation of what exactly it is that I like and why is it possible. But, but, I also like very much the WRA and ability to adjust the launch parameters as I want them.

And, while we are at it, thanks guys for all your work. That's just fantastic, despite my nitpicker of the year award :)
