Miller -> The unsinkable Raizo Tanaka (4/19/2016 6:03:40 PM)

Has any Jap player ever seen a message saying he is killed after a surface comabt? I cannot recall it ever happening in all my games played as the IJN.

It's bad enough for the Allied player when this guy is in charge of a Jap fleet, but then throw in the fact there is a bug whereby he has an identical twin brother in the game and the fact he never seems to die and you are pretty much facing him the entire game....

Put him on Kitakami, near the torpedo row...

AW1Steve -> RE: The unsinkable Raizo Tanaka (4/19/2016 6:24:23 PM)

I've lost him many times. In fact I've lost him more often than not. [:(]

Lowpe -> RE: The unsinkable Raizo Tanaka (4/19/2016 7:09:23 PM)

Yep, gone, gone, gone.

Lokasenna -> RE: The unsinkable Raizo Tanaka (4/19/2016 7:31:18 PM)

TF commanders have a much smaller chance of dying than ship commanders. Ship commanders seem to be basically 50/50 when the ship sinks. TF commanders, on the other hand... I'm not sure I've ever actually seen one die. At least not a message about it.

BBfanboy -> RE: The unsinkable Raizo Tanaka (4/19/2016 7:36:22 PM)

I don't know if it has changed but when I was playing both sides in sandbox mode (using the version before the latest official update), Tanaka died several times and came back on the available list a few days later.

Dili -> RE: The unsinkable Raizo Tanaka (4/19/2016 8:13:25 PM)

Tanaka is very aggressive so choose the battles he goes on wisely.

John 3rd -> RE: The unsinkable Raizo Tanaka (4/19/2016 8:34:09 PM)

He commands my four Kongo's.

BANZAI!

Both TF commanders and ship commanders have a 50% chance of dying when their ship is sunk. The reason why TF commanders are rarely seen to die is because "their" ship is the flagship which needs to sink. And of course then they are competing with the flagship captain for the honour of going down with the ship.

In practical terms you would need to have the entire TF sunk for there to be a good chance of the TF commander dying.

Alfred this assumes that there is an equal chance of the ships in the TF being engaged. This does not fit with my experience that the flagship is usually the first one the enemy targets and if the ship captain is aggressive, it usually stays in the battle forefront rather than letting the other ships have their turn.
And most often when I check magazine states after a battle the flagship is almost out but some of the other ships of the same type have barely shot any off.

Alfred -> RE: The unsinkable Raizo Tanaka (4/20/2016 4:30:57 PM)

The involvement in combat is not relevant.  Only whether the ship itself sinks for whatever reason.  See last sentence of s.6.3.6 of the manual.

A ship which sinks after hitting a mine whilst transiting has the same 50% chance of the ship commander dying as if it had been in combat.

OK -now I see where I was just thinking surface combat while losses to aircraft, subs, etc. are also likely (I lose very few to mines). I agree that those losses are quite random.
