NewportGames -> Pirates they suck... (4/26/2016 6:21:06 AM)

Started a new game and I thought I set it for easy in the classical age.

Anyway, I ended up paying off 12 pirate factions sucking the life blood out of my 4 colony empire. They were taking 10% of the states income. It became a full time job just trying to keep them at bay. Wars I wanted to fight could not be fought simply because I had to spread my small fleet around to my colonies to keep the pests away. All I kept hearing was the beep of a ship or base somewhere being attacked by pirates, over and over and over again.

I quit the game. It ceased to be fun.

The only thing pirates add to the game is aggravation.

Venting. Just wasted 8 hours on a very promising game which pisses me off.[:@]

why do you play in "easy" mode ?

from your AAR you seem to me an expert wargamer.. [&:]

and also: if you pay them off (the Pirates) why do they still attack your colonies ???

I pay them off but I still try to clean them out when I can. I guess it pissed them off.

For some reason this game had pirates all around my small empire. I landed in the mist of a nest of them.

Why do I play easy mode? I play to have fun.

Anyway, got out the editor and removed every nest of them I could find and started a new game. What happened right off the bat. Pirates wanted money within 2 minutes of the game starting. Oh well...

I read somewhere in this forum a thread about how to do with that pesky Pirates.

you should easily find it and try their hints in your game thus avoiding the somewhat unfair use of the editor [:)]

Got to get rid of the pirates. They are ruining another game otherwise I am going to quit playing this.

There must be a way to remove them from the game. I can open the editor and delete them, save the game, open the new game and they just pop back up as new pirates.

I do not play games to be annoyed but to have fun. If I wanted to be annoyed all I got to do is turn on the TV and watch the news. This is turning into an annoying game and I think I will quit playing it. Too bad it started out promising but fell flat on the pirates.

The overall theme of the game is pretty good and they do a good job of implementing it. It is basically a empire building game using diplomacy, trading, economics and war to get the job done. Works pretty good too. Pirates are just a distraction to the overall theme and serve very little useful purpose in the game. Smugglers could do what pirates do just as well without the annoyance or the pirate function could be handled abstractly (economics) in the game. I could divert so much funds to policing duties and if I divert to little my economy starts getting hurt. It would remove the annoyance factor and keep them within the grand scope of the game.

I was playing tonight and just about ready to attack another empire except there was this single pirate destroyer rampaging in my backfield just annoying me to death. I almost stopped the war to turn the fleets around and hunt this bugger down. The AI just sat on its butt and let him do what he wanted. I guess they were waiting for him to knock on their hulls to wake them up.

The game AI does a poor job of hunting down pirates. Had a incident tonight. I am stuck in a war and far from the front is this pirate faction in one of my colonies. The AI sends in one ship. They board it and capture it. The AI sends in one ship and guess what they board it and capture it. I am doing the calculations and by the time the war is over and I can get back to dealing with these guys they are going to have one big fleet. I was being forced to divert a fleet from the front lines to deal with one minor pirate faction.

Honestly I don't know why they are even in the game. They don't really fit the grand scope of the game.

PS. The AI finally woke up after arming the pirates and requested one fleet be sent to the colony.

Seemed to have solved my pirate problem. If you cannot get rid of them neuter them. Every time one appears I open the game editor and make them smugglers.

They perform a useful function and stay out of my way.

can work at first, but in the long run - with all this active smugglers - your economy will probably suffer much more than before.

there is a thread on this precise matter somewhere in the forum.

LordMM -> RE: Pirates they suck... (6/4/2016 6:46:59 PM)

They are annoying at first , but i have learnt slowly how to defeat them.

1.Note which systems are being commonly attacked, fit the mining bases of these systems with couple of boarding pods and good number of shields and armor. Before you know it The pirates will be either busying killing the ships you boarded or you will end up getting new ships every time there is a pirate attack..

2.I usually play with "no pirate spawning", so sometimes it helps to go on the offence against their pirate base, when you are being attacked. Getting rid of the pirate base and all the gas mining stations nearby means the pirate ships will soon be stuck in space. You might loose and few mining stations but destroying their base entirely mean you can civilize one part of your empire...

3.Don't pay of all the pirates, every time you meet a pirate faction send an agent to find their territory map and see where they are based at. You only need to pay of Raiders and Mercenaries factions around you. Ignore the other ones until you actually get attacked by them.
