Hi folks, never sure where to position a unit like this. Its range covers the whole map and it has an air search radar (no idea how that works in the game)? I tend to put them in areas where they have a good line of sight but is this necessary? Difficult to understand LoS for enemy aircraft - does a unit like this even need LoS to a target aircraft?

Cheers,

Near the back. Should have a decent LOS to the areas it needs to cover. If it is on low ground and there is a high hill blocking LOS to the airstrike target it can't see and therefore can't shoot at the low flying CAS aircraft.

Why does it need a direct LOS? There is no radar on the SA-11 launcher. The SA-11 system is comprised of the TELAR (9A310M1), Loader/Launcher (9A39M1), SNOW DRIFT Surveillance Radar (9S18M1), and Command and Control vehicle (9S470M1). Is it due to the limits of the game engine that you need a direct line of sight for all SAM?

A consideration that the radar is near by and it still needs LOS to engage a CAS aircraft. It's an abstraction until we place air search systems in the game tied to a launcher. Plus some other improvements to the model.

There is one exception. SAMs will engage level bombers that are in range since they are flying at high altitude above flak.

Thanks for the replies this was confusing me as well. Another question and a comment. How does smoke affect the game? If a unit does not have thermal imaging is it totally blind if a target is behind or in a smoke hex? If a unit does have thermal imaging is its chance to hit a target degraded by smoke?
For the comment - I'm playing my first large game as Soviets at the moment (Red Banner Slam) and surprised to see a few NATO 120mm mortars and utility vehicles from other units moving towards me making for easy kills. I'm surprised as the AI seems pretty good on the attack so I wasn't expecting to see anything like this from the AI when it is defending as that is normally easier for it to do. Is this behavior dependent on the the game engine or the individual scenario design?

Cheers,
Chris

Smoke will block LOS across the same elevation if it between two units without thermals. If one unit is in the smoked hex, the visibility is greatly reduced, but units can still be spotted and shot at.

The game AI does a good job attacking and a so-so defending job. Backwards to most games. That is one area for major overhaul in Southern Storm both with better AI and also the new defensive based orders (being able to defend and fall back to a preplanned location). In some cases, utility vehicles can get out of position with respect to their HQ and get into trouble. Also it's possible they planned a move based on seeing other units and "ran into" you on the move. That does happen at times.

Thanks Capn. If a unit does have thermal sights is smoke just ignored or does it have an impact on targetting?

CapnDarwin -> RE: Gadfly (5/4/2016 2:34:57 AM)

Units with thermals see thru the smoke and there is a small targeting penalty.
