WOW! :eek:

I'm in awe.

Btw.... is... that....a.... MAUS.... hiding...behind...it. :p :eek: :p

Kaakao -> (4/10/2003 2:09:18 AM)

I don't know what that is but I can tell you it'll do some sick damage! :eek: :eek:

And Belisarius seems to be right, looks like that's a Maus behind there.

M4Jess -> (4/10/2003 2:29:25 AM)

WTF!!!??? IS THIS???

Belisarius -> (4/10/2003 2:38:03 AM)

Dang, can't remember it's designation, but that is a prototype HEAVY mine-clearing panzer. (see the PzII turret on top?). It's supposed to use those pads for blasting the mines. Rear wheel steering.

It's kinda obvious why this never saw active duty.... :p

I remember it now. It's a NK-101. :cool:

The first picture is a SP 60cm "Karl" Mörser. Think the Russians calls it a "SU-600".

M4Jess -> (4/10/2003 2:42:45 AM)

The top pic is a German 60cm Heavy Assault Gun SU600? Karl Morser?

Belisarius -> (4/10/2003 2:48:39 AM)

Heheh now I know.

These beauties are at the Kubinka armor museum outside Moscow. Aberdeen in all it's glory, but the Kubinka probably dwarves it, by size of collection and not the least, the condition of it's displays.

Or at least it looks like it, when I found the site. :)

Voriax -> (4/10/2003 7:17:26 AM)

First pic: Karl mortar indeed.

2nd: Yup..Maus. hull from one vehicle and turret from another, afaik.

3rd: Alkett Minenraumfahrzeug/Raumgerät

:)

Klinkenhoffen -> (4/10/2003 8:44:05 AM)

from the picture of the mine clearer you can see where George Lucas got some ideas for the Imperial walkers in the orginal series of Star Wars.

Come Jess, join the power of the dark side.

Wolfleader -> (4/10/2003 9:08:17 AM)

That's the "Karl" 600mm Mortar from WW2.

stevemk1a -> Karl SP Mortar (4/10/2003 11:17:18 AM)

Cool, as a kid I built a 1/72 scale model of that beauty along with it's ammo loading vehicle (on a PzIV chassis) ... I am amazed to see one still exists and a Maus along side it too!!:D I'll have to add Kubinka to the list of places I'd love to visit (so far I've only made it to the Imperial War museum in London ... wish I could have spent more than only one day there :( )

Griefbringer -> (4/10/2003 4:38:32 PM)

Wow, Karl 60cm. I have never seen a picture of one, but I have read of them in a book. I think only a small number (6 at most) were ever built, and each one needed a couple of ammo carriers to keep it supplied. Must have been jolly good time loading one of those - I guess there is crane somewhere for it.

I think they went to use somewhere around 1942 or 1943 in eastern front, not any better idea of their achievements or later fate (I guess they were pretty slow and prone to mechanical troubles - like everything heavy and experimental).

I want to see those available in SPWAW too - any ideas for technical specifications?

Griefbringer

Klinkenhoffen -> (4/10/2003 4:41:32 PM)

I would hate to be on the receiving end of one.

How much would the projectile weigh?

Griefbringer -> (4/10/2003 4:54:30 PM)

I guess the rate of fire was not too good, which would make them a bit less deadly - but it would still be pretty nasty to be on the receiving end.

60cm must be a freaking big shell - I guess it is about the size of a 500 lbs bomb or something like that. Great for blowing up whole buildings!

Voriax -> (4/10/2003 8:22:33 PM)

And mind you, that Karl is a _self propelled gun_. Now perhaps that could be included in the next oob patch? ;)
Warhorse, gonna make us an lbm????
Pretty please?

That would be great...I think my ol'M4 could take him!!;)

Voriax -> (4/10/2003 8:32:12 PM)

I actually have a short movie clip about Karl in action, but darned if I remember where I found it...bit over 1MB in size, so if someone wants to put it up somewhere drop me a line....

Voriax

ps. Check this site: http://www.geocities.com/ssvong/morser/karl_main.htm

for Karl info and some *very* fine photos of Karl models.

Wolfleader -> (4/11/2003 6:06:22 AM)

IRT Willy

Dragon Models released a 1/35 scale model of that Karl Heavy Mortar a few months ago if your interested. It should be available from your neighborhood hobby shop now.

I'm planning to pick up a copy for myself as soon as I finish my exams and have some vacation time, it'll nicely compliment the 1/35 scale Maus I already have. :D

AbsntMndedProf -> (4/11/2003 8:33:21 AM)

Btw, the Karlgerat, of which 6 were built, 4 of 60cm and 2 of 42cm, were named after General of Artillery Karl Becker, who worked on their design.

Eric Maietta

Karnaaj -> (4/11/2003 11:07:33 AM)

Mmmmm, 60 centimeters...

"Herr Major! Ve are taking heavy sniper fire from the building ahead!"

WHAM

"Uh, vow... how about ze von next to it? Just to be sure?"

WHAM

WhiteRook -> (4/12/2003 11:20:40 AM)

Wow wish I could have seen this when you first posted it, one I actualy knew the answer to for a change. ;)

Voriax -> (4/12/2003 2:40:22 PM)

WhiteRook -> (4/13/2003 9:58:37 AM)

Great site ! Thanks for the link!

Karnaaj -> (4/15/2003 1:02:45 PM)

Aaahhhggh! The guy I got the link from posted abpout it already! Sat up 'til 2 AM last night leeching all the video off panzerlexikon... too bad it's all silent. Wonder if there's an authentic sound-file out there somewhere for that 380mm rocket-gun on the Sturmtiger? It certainly left an impressive *visual* signature.

And how many people watched the Goliath clip and thought, "Ahhh, Hans und Fritz are really enjoying their new Christmas present..." ?
