DamienThompson -> Monte Cassino First Battle Campaign Game (5/11/2016 2:01:14 AM)

Hi All,

Here is a campaign game for you all.

The Battle Represents the First Battle of Monte Cassino. The advanced elements of the 34th US infantry Division have just crossed the Rapido River and are struggling to make their way inland. There are several divergent objectives for the Americans

1. Establish a foothold on the Western Banks of the Rapido

2. 168 Regiment: Push Northwards into the Mountains to capture the town of Cairo and then on to the Summit of Monte Castelone.

3. 135 Regiment: Push Southwards and Capture the town and important crossing and push west along the Railway (paved Road) to seize the highway to Rome.

4. 133 Regiment: Push Westwards into the Mountains and then swing southwest along the line of Hills towards the Monastery

I would like to say it's pretty close to being finished but I think its just about impossible for the Americans to survive

OK File is uploaded now,

A bit more info on the Battle.

The Game starts 24th January 1944 with the elements (roughly one company) of the 168 infantry Regiment coming across the river to the North of the Town. Later in the Day the 135 Regiment will arrive to the south of the 168, followed by the 133 Regiment.

The Germans have heavily fortified the Mountains blocking the advance. They have Self Propelled Guns, Artillery Support and on board Mortars and AT guns. Reinforcements in the form of a Panzer Grenadier regiment and a Parachute regiment are expected to arrive in the next few days

The Game will go for 120 turns.

I have played a few turns as Americans and been slaughtered each time. This seems quite historical but am considering several alterations.

1. Placing footbridges over the river and allowing the Americans to get organised on the far bank shielded from direct fire.

2. Moving some of the German positions further up into the Mountains

3. Delaying the arrival of some reinforcements

4. Reducing the calibre of certain German weaponry

5. Giving the US player some Tank support

6. Adding some extra terrain to help the US player get a foothold.

Historically the actions of the 34th Infantry division at Cassino has been called the finest feat of military arms of World War 2. I hope that this campaign can somehow capture the incredible bravery of the American soldiers.

This is the First in the series I will be producing covering all 4 battles. Next up will be the New Zealanders and the Indians, but I want to get this one done first and fine tune it. Some feedback would be greatly appreciated.

(by the way, things like minefields, barbed wire, Marsh hexes, Level 5 and 6 hills, Amphibious crossing rules, Pillboxes would also be helpful.)

great looking map and scenario , must say though, by the end of turn 2 as the Americans I was wishing all of my units were broken and there was something in the new patch that allowed me to rout across water . Brutal :)

Hi All,

Definitely going to try and rebalance the game a bit by toning down German defensive positions and altering US set up a bit, but am still going to try and keep it as historical as possible.
