Do we need another DOOM? It has been over 10 years since the last...graphically it looks impressive...over 2,000 reviews...looks pretty linear...pretty expensive...[&:] Time will tell...

Peever -> RE: DOOM (2016) (5/14/2016 5:03:10 AM)

It looks nice but no new Doom game will compare to playing the original. I was thirteen years old when I played the shareware version at a friends house back in 1994 and it was unlike anything I had ever played at that point, since I was used to playing side scrolling action games on Nintendo.

Qwixt -> RE: DOOM (2016) (5/14/2016 6:14:45 PM)

Doom II was my favorite Doom. I think all Dooms have been linear. The only things I can remember at this point are opening doors and hearing the roar of a pack of demons inside, and the very last fight trying to kill boss with a rocket gun while going up and down on some sort of elevator.

Hertston -> RE: DOOM (2016) (5/14/2016 8:23:03 PM)

I didn't like the multiplayer beta. People seem to like the campaign a lot, but it also seems to be pretty short at 10-15 hours or so. It's too expensive for that, so I'll just wait for a sale.

From what I remember you could roam around, choose different paths to go from A to B. Doom 3 was ridiculous though. Utterly linear [&:]

ie Level 17 of Doom 2

Pvt_Grunt -> RE: DOOM (2016) (5/15/2016 9:44:46 AM)

Loved Doom II - the first shooter I played through.

After that was Duke Nukem 3D - aaahhh the memories, back in the days when a game session would go all night.

Cant make it much past a cup of tea and 10 pm these days [>:]

Yes, those were the days...exciting and fond memories! [:)] Today's gaming is pretty amazing, no complaints!

Depends when you start playing. I started play Quake 4 at 7 PM or so, and played it through whole night. Had I started it earlier in that day, I would have gone through of it by 10 PM.

Kuokkanen -> RE: DOOM (2016) (5/30/2016 7:44:07 PM)

Game is out. Has anyone in here played it? On another forum someone said that Doom 2 sucked, Doom 3 sucked, and same thing about some other games. Then he got the game and said this:
quote:

I know this is meant as an homage to the original Doom, but frankly, it's better.

What are your opinions?
(I haven't got the game yet)

No, I have not bought it, I'm still on the fence...the reviews have been terrific though!

Ranger33 -> RE: DOOM (2016) (5/30/2016 10:43:08 PM)

I bought it as a way to test out my new gaming PC build. I'm waiting for my new video card to come in the mail tomorrow (I splurged big time and got the brand new GTX 1080) and also waiting for Doom 2016 to download. The PC version requires a 43.8 GB download, which is pretty ridiculous. I feel like my internet connection is decent but it's still taking 24+ hours to download.

I'll definitely come back here and give my thoughts after playing some. By all accounts the single player campaign is great and takes over 12 hours to complete, so it's pretty meaty. Multiplayer should provide some entertainment as well.

I'm also really excited to try out the SnapMap feature. From what I've read it's limited compared to the old games, but on the flipside just about anyone can use it to make a working map and publish it right there within the game. You have to use pre-built rooms and the level can only be so big, but you can go crazy with triggers and basic programming logic, modifying enemies and player weapons, etc. There is already a Harvest Moon map where you grow a garden of sorts, and a tower defense map, and other creative ideas, all in the first week. Besides of course the standard sort of Doom maps. There is a rating system so you can play all the best maps as people make them and get virtually unlimited content for the foreseeable future. I hope they expand on this part of the game and add more options for map building.

In the meantime I've been playing Brutal Doom for the first time. It's a mod which turns Doom II into a more modern shooter with full mouse aiming among many other new features. The "Brutal" part is that monsters get blown apart in all sorts of new ways. Every room you go through is literally covered in gore, including the walls and ceiling, by the time you leave. There are also new weapons, monsters, friendly AI soldiers and even tanks in the included campaign (you can also play it with most WADs). About halfway through the campaign right now and the last mission ended with a battle involving a dozen AI marines and a couple tanks facing down literally 100+ demons of every sort with me right in the middle, it was insane. Highly recommended if you've never played it.

GTX 1080 w/8 gigs...nice. I'll look forward to your experiences with Doom.

barkhorn45 -> RE: DOOM (2016) (5/31/2016 7:40:05 PM)

I like gzdoom.

Ranger33 -> RE: DOOM (2016) (6/1/2016 12:50:29 AM)

My initial impressions after about an hour of the campaign: Awesome! It's all action from the word go, rock music blaring, great gun handling and of course graphics. I took the suggestion from elsewhere to play the game on Nightmare difficulty and I must say it is a real challenge without feeling unfair. You must constantly be on the move dodging attacks and thinking about where you are heading while of course blasting away.

Probably my single favorite thing is the writing, if you can believe it. This is a game that knows exactly what it is and embraces that. At the very beginning of the campaign you activate a console and begin to get the typical "NPC talking to you through the intercom and explaining the situation", instead of listening to the exposition speech your Doom Guy just throws the monitor across the room! I laughed out loud!

Thanks for your observations Joe! Your GTX 1080 must make things very fluid and smooth...it's looking like this game will be a "Must Buy" for me! [:)]

TulliusDetritus -> RE: DOOM (2016) (6/1/2016 3:17:48 PM)

Do you remember the "how tough are you?" screen in Wolfenstein (the difficulty settings that is)? [:D]

Qwixt -> RE: DOOM (2016) (6/1/2016 4:45:34 PM)

Nice on the new 1080 video card.

I think I played on "Bring 'em on!" because I was much younger and testosterone levels would not accept either of the first two in 1990. I remember playing Wolfenstein at my job.

zakblood -> RE: DOOM (2016) (6/1/2016 5:28:29 PM)

the GTX 1080 is going to be an epic card but is already making some previous buyer of the last greatest cards (980 Ti or even the Titan X) sick with Nvidia, as not only is it way cheaper than the last / previous card, it's way quicker, bit overkill for most, but if you want or are using dual cards etc for 4k screens, look no further, one card wonder, low power, fast as a rocket and half the cost of previous solutions, so great news indeed.

premium price atm on launch but once it settles down a bit might grab one in a year or so for my gaming rig[;)]

regarding Doom, looks good, but not really my sort of game either so not played it or seen much apart from online stuff, so enjoy if you have it...

The GTX 1080 is definitely going to be in my new rig! [:)] I don't think it is overkill for graphically intensive games (Doom, Grand Theft Auto V, Fallout 4...), don't you think Zak?

Kuokkanen -> RE: DOOM (2016) (6/1/2016 7:08:24 PM)

About GTX 1080, what does it need? I've got 3,30 GHz Core i5-2500K and 8 GB of RAM. Do I need change processor and increase RAM before I swap GTX 580 out for GTX 1080?

It is overkill for 1080p@60, and potentially 2560x1440@60 in my opinion.

Recommended Power Supply 500W

apart from that your system will be fine, will slow the card down a bit getting data to it, but not enough unless your running a 4k screen on a high setting, then yes more cpu would be needed

http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=627&game=Doom%204

unless you mean for Doom mind you so here's the spec's and test run do be fully sure before hand[;)]

Doom demo is out on steam, free as normal and well worth a try if it's your cup of tea, i quite enjoy it, but wouldn't buy it, as i'd never play it, but maybe getting a free copy with my next GPU anyway[&o]

IntrepidMan -> RE: DOOM (2016) (6/19/2016 7:49:40 PM)

I still play DOOMII every week. I just cant make the sound work yet. [:D]
