bobman0330 -> Victory condition question (5/22/2016 9:58:05 PM)

I am just wrapping up my first game as the Soviets. My goal is to Save Moscow, while my AI opponent has opted for Military Independence. On October 4, Rostov fell to the Germans. Both Sevastopol and Kharkov were already under German control at that time. On November 5, the Soviets captured Warsaw and destroyed the AGC HQ. (Future historians will find much to criticize on both sides of this conflict...) The final adjusted scores are German 43, Russia 52. Who wins? The computer scores this as a Russian minor defeat. The rules are quite unclear, but it seems like the Soviet sudden death victory should trump Germany's minor victory.

Follow-up question: if this is the correct answer, does the answer change if the Soviet player drives down the German player's score some before capturing Warsaw?

EDIT: I've dug into the post-game report, and Rostov did not actually fall until October 16th, so the 30-day clock did not run! What ruling now?

Hi bob,

The sudden death victory condition should have kicked in the turn after you took Warsaw and AGC HQ. You didn't get a message declaring you victorious?

Sounds like a very unusual game. The Germans took Rostov but you captured Warsaw in Nov '41 ???

How did you manage such a feat?

Cheers,
Cameron

[edit] I checked the code and it's possible that you've wriggled through the logic gates with your unusual result. I'd award yourself a decisive win and it'll become official if you can repeat the feat after the next patch. [/edit]

It was kind of wild. The situation on the southern front was probably not that interesting. I held off pretty well in the south in the first few weeks, so I reassigned one HQ to central to bolster the defense of Moscow, which wasn't going well. Then my defensive line got breached, I fought a bit too hard on that plain north of Crimea, and ended up getting my southern armies pretty much shattered. What is interesting is what happened in the middle. I set up a defensive line along the Polotsk-Vitebsk-Orsha-Mogilev line. The Germans were pushing pretty effectively and took Polotsk and Vitebsk.

Then, out of the blue, the 4th Panzergruppe moves in north of Polotsk and starts slashing in east of Smolensk! Fortunately, I had just deployed 2 army HQs in Smolensk, and was able to push north with 2 fresh armies and cut in behind 4PG. There's a running battle, but I eventually manage to encircle almost all of 4PG, except for the SS foot division. So that's a big win, but what's even better is that the running battle induces the AI to pull the 9th Army, which was holding the line opposite Orsha, to pull north. At the same time, the AGC panzergruppes and the 4th Army are trying to make a big flanking maneuver to the south (from Gomel to Bryansk). This leaves a big hole along the main rail line to Minsk. So I redeploy to meet the flanking maneuver and also push an army out towards Minsk. Long story short, the 9th Army also ends up getting surrounded, and the rest of the AGC forces are way off east. I end up with three armies more or less unopposed pushing into the German heartland and cutting off AGN.

Hell of a game you guys have put together here! [:D]
