If you want a unit to stay on or use a specifc aircraft type. If you keep them on manual this would also stop auto-swap function which sometimes uses inferior types.

On Turn 2 or so I look at the aircraft in pools and look for ones that have a large number (like 100) but aren't being used in any units "0" in the last column. Then i'll switch a couple of air units to this type to not only make use of aircraft otherwise sitting, but it will increase the pool of the aircraft available for other units.

for example (off top of my head). Germans have quite a few Ju-86 a/c sitting around and they are a decent bomber. I swapped a couple of units that were flying Ju-88s to Ju-86. Now there are 40 (or so) extra Ju-88 in the pool and the Ju-86 can gets some use (and attrition) rather than sit around rusting.
