Anyone know the difference between a Soviet Separate Sapper Battalion and a Soviet Separate Engineer Battalion?

My wild ass guess is one is combat engineer and the other is construction engineer.

That's not what I am seeing in trying to figure this out. I see both performing construction tasks. It seems like the Sapper units are more defensive/mining oriented but the Engineers maybe more technical to include demolitions. I just can't find the magical explanation on why these two units are named differently.

May be of interest: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sapper_army (and more detailed ru version).
They may have used the general sapper term for both types but in 42 they split them into more specialized combat and contruction engineers.

There was basically no difference. Sappers could mine own territory during defensive ops and clear mines during offensive. Both of them played only auxiliary role during assaults, while assault sapper-eng bns (appeared in 1943) had their own striking capabilities.

That is what I am seeing as well. I just can't get over the fact that the Soviets had two distinct and different names for units that performed the same functions.
