Randy -> Feedback on 5.0!! (5/7/2001 4:31:00 AM)

While I'm waiting for my mega Campaign disk in the mail, those of you who have been able to download the 5.0, what do you think? What are the new graphics like? How are the OOB's? What are some of the new scenarios? For those of us waitinng for the mail, please wet our appetites!! :D Also, do you need a zip drive to down load? Thanks Semper Fi Randy

Paul Vebber -> (5/7/2001 6:47:00 AM)

I guess they are too busy playing it ;) Hopefully a few will come up for air before too long!

Alby -> (5/7/2001 8:27:00 AM)

only thing Ive seen about it so far is side armor slope on Ktiger is 0 instead of 18, what it should be. easily fixed. [ May 06, 2001: Message edited by: Alby ]

One quick question that I cant find an answer to in the manual. In the purchase screens I've noticed some units when clicked on turn yellow. Whats this mean? Sorry just rememered a second question ... When I've purchased a unit and it turns red after, signifying that the unit is now "out of stock" and I change my mind and remove it from my core it remains red in colour. Shouldn't it have reverted back?

Don -> (5/7/2001 10:21:00 AM)

No, McGib, they don't come back. I encountered this in testing and I guess it's intentional - but it makes it so you have to know what you want, and many times I don't!

Yes, Don is right; look at this(5.0 new features list): 106) Units Rarity Ratings are now rechecked after you purchase each one of them. Note: if you delete a formation that is rechecked and now no longer available, you cannot buy them back, so be careful!

skukko -> (5/7/2001 3:35:00 PM)

Don't know about you, but I do like that rarity thing. This will change some pbems very much. Have you noticed GE Wurfies cost? Shall we complain about it? :D There is many things that seems old, but are in fact redone and better. And there is lots of changes, so I suggest that before asking too much, go to, for example, Tankheads site and read the list of changes. Might be that Matrix has same list, I never bothered to check :D mosh

Warrior -> (5/7/2001 3:40:00 PM)

5.0 is SPECTACULAR!

Wolf -> (5/8/2001 12:49:00 PM)

Randy.....I can't even believe you don't have the MEGA CAMPAIGN yet!! Hop to it, recruit! the wolfmeister

Peregrine Falcon -> (5/8/2001 3:29:00 PM)

Just got 5.0 yesterday. So far, looks very good. I tried all new features, including melee & overrun...Nice. Rarity-factor is also good, if little unforgiving sometimes. But map editor....These new buildings and features are really something... :D I can see some tasty cityfighting (PBEM) ahead soon :D OOB's look good. But why are some of the names changed?? Panther A? Tiger E? Konigstiger? :( Not seen any other big bugs around. Yet. Hopefully there is none... :) [ May 08, 2001: Message edited by: Peregrine Falcon ]

Rarity-factor is at the moment one of the most annoying features. It works very well with tanks and other vehicles, but with infantry it doesn't work that well in my opinion. Good thing rarity factor can be toggled off... :) One thing that is still there and that I do not like at all, is mortars. Why the multipliers are still there? IMO it's one of the most stupid way to represent several mortars (especially because two mortars fires the amount of grenades one mortar should fire in reality). I've sent several posts about this in the past but still looks like I'm the only(?) one that it bothers. Maybe I just should give up and modify OOB's even though I have to give those OOBs to my opponents too... Otherwise the game seems to be very nice. Good work Matrix!! :) Colonel von Blitz [ May 08, 2001: Message edited by: Colonel von Blitz ]

So far I love it! I just need to know what to do with the rest of my butt being handed to me on Omaha Beach???? Excellent!

Mikimoto -> (5/9/2001 1:45:00 AM)

Hello. I have played a little, now. Only one word: WONDERFUL!!!! :D

Charles2222 -> (5/9/2001 2:09:00 AM)

Colonel von Blitz: I believe I'm in agreement with you on the mortar issue. I'm not a big mortar fan, but there's times where I'm down to 50-60 core points left, and then I want an artillery piece or two. With those points I can but a 75mm FH, but cannot buy a mortar team because they cost 60 or so since they only come in teams of twos (or more).

Paul Vebber -> (5/9/2001 2:13:00 AM)

We left them in becasue they tended to be used in integal units of that size that had a single radio and would be concentrated together on teh same target. All the rounds are fired, it just fires them in "salvos" of 2 or 3 that land in the same place and are shown as one single "event" - but the game resolves the salvo as 2 or 3 rounds for kill and suppression purposes. Seperating them all out as indivdual barrels gives the player more flexibility targeting them than we felt appropriate based on how they were used. As well as cutting down the time it takes to display them by a factor of 2 or 3.

Only thing I see about the rarity factor that I dont like is in some scenarios/campaigns where a specific type of unit is called for and its unavailable. Aside from that I dont have any complaints in the least ... oh yeah ... where's the MC?? :D :D :D

Don Doom -> (5/9/2001 3:26:00 AM)

All I got to say is "OUTSTANDING". Now you have your work cut out to top it. :D :D :D :cool:

skukko -> (5/9/2001 4:21:00 AM)

Feature I do like much: Tank-panic. Now I can pin up whole convoy of infantry with Tiger by just driving thru it without a single shot from my Cat :D And it is everytime as funny when trucks drive away from tank. Think this like I do: When playing with C&C On, this can give to attacker slight advantage when enemys troops are spreaded around. And I don't have to say that this is great game, you'll know it. mosh

Mark Ezra -> (5/9/2001 6:11:00 AM)

It's been a year or more since I bothered to mess with the Editor. The improvements there are great. So much more to do. I'm busy now working on a 1930 US v USSR meeting with Cossacks, Cavalry and FT17's...I'm having a ball making a river crossing for the horse drawn arty and mule pack ammo and mg teams. Just have to say this editor is so much better and so much fun. V5 is terrific, and the Mega Campaign is now just days form my door!

Stukadawg -> (5/9/2001 10:26:00 AM)

Since I started with version 5.0 I can't note any differences to previous versions. What I can tell you is that its nice to play Steel Panthers the way it was meant to be played. Messages in the message window are accurate. When I look at the speed of a traveling tank, the value seems appropriate for the amount of distance it covered. With SPIII (which will always harbor many fond memories) I could send a tank halfway across the battlefield and the speed would still read around 12 mph. I like the reduction of movement points after firing and the way vehicles can take damage instead of combat being an all or none deal. The graphics are incredible, I spent an hour and a half in the encyclopedia noting the slight differences between different variants. The camo schemes are really nice too. I only played two battles so far. The first, and still unfinished, is the first battle of the WW2 campaign (in the campaign generator), I'm playing as the Germans and I really like the field gray on my tanks. The Polish tanks look really nice too (if they'd just stop exploding). The second was the first scenario on the list, I forgot it's name but it involves the Russians storming a German town on route to Berlin. The Russian vehicles looked great. I spent many days painting GHQ miniatures (am I bringing back any memories for anyone?) and the choice of color was exact to my own. So to describe with a single word: Impossible. So here's four: Easily my favorite game. Unseating Age of Kings, SPIII, and Civ. Thank me? Aye, thank you. Sincerely, Le pup tethered to the back of a JU-87 screaming, "Who let this happen to me!"

SPWAW 5.0 is Fantastic! Want to take a look at the new graphics? Flashfyre -> (5/9/2001 11:03:00 AM)

To answer the question of the "yellow" unit selections, it appears that these are "historically" obsolete, but are still available to purchase. For instance, I started a scenario in the editor (just to play around), US vs GE, 1944. In the US OOB, under armor, I selected Lt Tank Sec. Offered everything from M1917 to M24 Chaffee. But the earlier models (like M1, M2 "Mae West", M3 Stuart, etc.) were all yellow. In 1944, only the Chaffee and the M5 Stuarts were "available". But I could still buy the M1s, anyhow. Hope this is correct, and answers the question.

Wild Bill -> (5/9/2001 12:06:00 PM)

It is the Steel Panthers I have always wanted! Through the years I've watched it develop and mature. This is about as close as it will get. And it's close enough for me! :D Wild Bill
