Aditia -> Small but nasty bug with automated ground attack routine (7/1/2016 12:20:26 AM)

For some reason I am a fan of letting the AI do the work of selecting airgroups for all air missions, but I was always a bit disappointed with the fact that even if I bomb a target that is within fighter cover (according to the overlay), no fighters are sent.

I found the reason why; it has to do with the automated routine for selecting air groups. Often the AI simply does not seem to select any fighter groups for the mission (except Ground Support). I have no idea if this already well known to the community, but is an unfixed bug anyway..

Example of what happens (I am playing Axis side btw):

- I soften a target with ground/unit bombing air mission: No fighters are sent.
- Next action: Ground attack the target with ground unit: Support mission is flown and fighters ARE sent.
- Next action: MANUALLY fly a ground attack mission on the same hex, lo and behold, fighter groups are available in the selection screen.

I find that the AI only starts selecting fighter groups for missions when I am MUCH closer to friendly airfields.

My Ground Support and Ground Attack values in air doctrine are identical, so that should not be of influence.

Until this is fixed, I highly recommend manually slecting airgroups for missions, especially if the enemy airforce is in range of your target; otherwise you are just feeding level bomber kills and pilot experience to your opponent.

Manually selecting has the added bonus of not flying escort when you know for sure the enemy will not have fighters in range.

Believe this is working as designed & programmed, so would not call this a "bug." It is not an optimum process, though.

Choosing an air base from an HQ group that has escort fighters available is a better approach, as you've found out. Believe air elements for the mission are selected from all the air bases associated with the group.

Thanks for your answer.

Bug or not, I would say that how it is currently, is very ineffective and makes for very detrimental results for unaware players, which should not be desirable for a function that is there to give players some automation; a candidate for a future patch I would say.

But yeah, selecting airgroups manually for missions in 'danger territory'mitigates the issue.

I too find out the routine doesn't select closest forces and likes to fly airplanes from half the map away, which results in no escorts being added (due to them being out of range).

I found the procedure works best when manually selecting airbase hex first.

If you select a close air group, you will get a fighter escort... it's one more left click, repeated hundreds of time...

Agree, this could be improved (through the air doctrine?) => no automantic bombing if no fighter escort

Luckily the days of this system are numbered (even if the number is yet unknown) [:)]

However, today I realized it will take much longer to play WitE 2.0 games because each turn will now consists of two parts [:(]
