We can't celebrate July 4 in the South. Today is the 153rd anniversary of the surrender of Vicksburg and of the day the Army of Northern Virginia commenced its retreat from Gettysburg.
But...since my dad was a US Army veteran...and since his great-grandfather was a Confederate veteran...and since some of them further back were Loyalists during the Revolution...well, it's confusing!
But like all proud Americans, today is a day to celebrate. For us Forumites, the meaning, the words, the ideas behind Independence Day are often in our thoughts.
