avers246 -> any games that include the battle of the Atlantic (7/12/2016 3:11:29 AM)

hey guys, im very interested in naval history especially in world war 2 as well as the European navies. So, are their any games that are like Gary Grigsby's WITPAE's naval involvement?
Or is there a game being made by Gary Grigsby or being made in the style of Gary Grigsby that has a naval war at sea in the Atlantic?

Great Naval Battles series comes to mind

Perhaps the incoming Gary Grigsby's War in Europe but not even sure. CEAW Grand Strategy's battle of the Atlantic gameplay, also high level, is fun to play.

In the dawn of computer games, there were several dealing with the cruise of the Bismarck, but I don't think there's been any new ones for at least half a dozen years. . .

Simulations Canada produced "Battle of the Atlantic" for the Apple II, but it was very crash-prone. (And boring after the first three or four months.)

My favorite: Aces of the Deep

Wish there was a remake of this one!

+1 Aces of the Deep replaced Silent Service II as my favorite sub sim. I don't know why it isn't available even in its original form today; the Silent Hunter series is.

Yes indeed, it does look compelling and it has a battle editor to boot...

It was in this thread:

The ultimate goal seems to be War in Europe if this has not changed.

Got this from steam for $10 - great deal. It's a fairly simple game to start - choose ships, choose gun, select elevation then fire! But the graphics are very good, the ship models are fantastic. Very well researched with every ship available.
I am fully engrossed in the battles as there is no level repay in the Campaign (or else I'm too stupid to see it) so if you lose a precious ship its GONE [:(][:(]

And I cant begin to explain how gratifying it is to watch the enemy ship SLOOOOWLY sink with the underwater cam.

For $10 it's highly recommended.

Have not seen anything like it, Though about making a board game of the Atlantic Campaign. Once I finish up the Pacific first, but still I gotta do a lot of research on the Atlantic before I work on that project. Most of my knowledge is based in the Pacific during WWII.

You may also want to take a look at Victory at Sea.

Another possibility is Warship Combat : Navies at War.

The Witp AE engine could very well handle this. Convoys, escorts, raiders, BBs, CAs, armed merchants AMC. Air patrols (land or CVEs). And of course the submarines.

+ the daily turns + the intel. Everything is there (except the tactical part).

ezzler -> RE: any games that include the battle of the Atlantic (4/10/2017 6:36:17 PM)

Would like to see that. WITP-AE turned to WITA-AE.

as a much earlier poster pointed out, the old Sim Can game did run the battle of the Atlantic. and it was good. And quite realistic for its day. A bomb hit on a cruiser could put it into dock for days or even months.

But it was quite boring. The Germans did not have the resources. So making a single bold commerce raid once a year wasn't enough to keep you at the screen.

The ship models look great. Here is the Prince of Wales targeting CA Hipper with BB Valiant in support.

Don't forget the forthcoming Order of Battle: Kriegsmarine. While not a sim, neither are some of the other games mentioned. And OoB is turn-based so there's that (positive!).

Yes. The WiTP:AE engine could be-seemingly-well adapted to something like this. I think the convoy system would have to be more clearly fleshed out and-perhaps-more flexible to player-derived actions. Either that or have tonnage goals and just give you the ships and let you do it as you see fit.
