My Uncle George was killed by a guided missile carried by a HE 177 while in transit on the RMS Rhona. The plane was in use for some time and that missile was optically guided and also used against Italian battleships being surrendered to the allied powers. http://ww2today.com/26th-november-1943-troopship-rohna-sunk-over-1000-us-troops-lost Roughly 1977, the Military Book Club sold me a book called I-Boat Captain in which the Japanese author claimed a Japanese battleship, (the Mutsu) IIRC blew itself up while handling a new type of shell which was very secret, a shell meant to be fired high over enemy fleets with the ability to "sink the entire enemy fleet." The Japanese governments' "official" investigation: http://www.ww2incolor.com/forum/showthread.php/8425-IJN-Battleship-Mutsu-Sinking True or not, who knows, but the author claimed it was very secret and covered up by the Japanese due to the disastrous results. If true, it sure smacks of a limited nuclear device as we had in the EARLY fifties.
