Chuske -> Breakout & Pursuit - How to take well defended ports (eg Calais, Antwerp & Brest) (7/24/2016 1:31:29 PM)

Been playing through Breakout and Pursuit vs AI on challenging. Experience is quite different compared to last time I played many updates a go, the AI no longer pulled back as smartly and I did a semi-Falaise but then got held up by scattered german units and lack of supply.

I reached Antwerp on turn 8 and dropped Paras next to it but the AI focused its forces on Antwerp, wiped out my paras and then I found all my remaining objectives had high def CV, I had low supply and didn't have time to prepare for siege nor the CVs for a frontal assualt.

Looks like if I'd taken any one of Metz, Brest or Antwerp I'd have won.

Any tips on taking ports with high def CV?

I also feel like I'm still not great on the initial attacks on turn 1, still not sorted out in my mind the principles of what order to attack in to get the best breakout or closest to a breakout. In particular I'm not sure when to use my armoured units, ideally I'd break the line with infantry and then breakout with armour but usually the infantry while forcing a retreat from the AI they Axis retreat maybe a hex or two in reasonable order and with the combat delays I can't quite breakout on turn 1. Any help/advice?

I found that moving as many of the TF units offshore as you could really pays off for taking well defended ports. The extra artillery disrupts the enemy and the fleet cuts supply (so few can recover). If you have a TF will low attrition, you can even leave it next to the port in the axis part of the turn as that adds to the problems the defenders have. None of this, of course, helps with Antwerp itself but I've used to clean out Brest and the Channel Ports.

Also a few turns of using LBs on unit bombing can help - you'll need to rotate the squadrons as they will take a lot of losses.

In effect, its all about ensuring that as many as possible of the defending elements are disrupted before your ground attack goes in

Run level Bomber attacks against the railyard.
Otherwise, Heavy Artillery, Engineers, Infantry and amphib support (if possible).

Thanks, I'd forgotten totally about amphib TFs and in this scenario you don't care if they get beat up.

Also think next time I try this scenario, to win I'd have to plan ahead and focus on 1 target (either Brest or Antwerp) and have infantry units prepared for port assault (engineers + SP art) in advance and motorise them to get them to the port in time.

I also need to ignore or use as few troops as possible to contain units in non-objective ports as Le Havre
