101Man -> ARD-Floating Dry Dock (7/29/2016 2:53:29 AM)

Ok, it's May '43 and I received one in Seattle. Reading the history of the first one it was towed to Espiritu Santo to work there. The version in the game has a speed of 5.

1. Do I need to tow it?

2. How does it work? (Join together with damaged ship in a TF or in a port or what)

I understand it can only repair flotation damage, just want to know how it moves and repairs.

Thanks.

It can move in it's own TF but I normally give it a couple of escorts & stage it across to Pacific due to fuel/range. It will take a long time to move from WC to SoPac/SWPac places. Disband it in port & it acts like an AR so you'd assign a ship needing the repairs to the appropriate repair type (repair ship instead of pierside or shipyard) w/ max ship size benefitting = to it's tonnage (ARD tonnage size), I'd also team it w/ an AR in a larger port.

Thanks.

It works by disbanding it in the port.

When you are looking to repair a ship with flotation damage at that port the text to assign the repair to a repair ship will be enabled.

ARDs come in varying sizes with varying capacities up to 30k tons (IIRC).

One with 3k ton capacity is only good for repairing small craft and destroyers.

There is one that can handle around 50,000 tons that I have noted in the game by late 1943. Or at least it can in DaBabes. The big dry docks were not built intact in the US, but actually built in sections and it was these that were towed to Pacific locations and then welded together. My understanding is that there were two designs-one of seven sections (55,000 ton lift) and a larger one that could handle 90,000 tons. Don't know if that will show up later in the game. So the big ARDs that arrive on the West Coast and need to travel to the Pacific are really an abstraction.

Lazy question, as I can probably find the answer in the manual:

Would a ARD fix all float damage? or is it only capable of fixing minor damage and 5 points of major damage?

m10bob -> RE: ARD-Floating Dry Dock (7/29/2016 3:08:20 PM)

ARD will fix all flotation damage provided they are large enough for the damaged ship.

They are considered to move by imaginary tugs ergo the speed of 5 kts.

As stated above, they are rare and vulnerable so be sure to protect them and have protection with them, in and out of port.

In port, they work very well with AR and AG type ships.
It also helps to have engineer land units there as well.

what would the engineer do?
I guess repair port damage in case of bombing?

Would lots of naval support be more important than engineers?

The LCU type engineers will keep expanding the port. The larger the port, the bigger the capacity.
I do not know what the ratio is between floating support and land support.

As far as the ARD goes I don't believe it gets assistance form either NS devices or the port. Check here...
