Soviet airborne troops in WWII did that without the net. Snow was sufficient.

When I was a kid, there was a weatherman on the local news who was a skydiver. One day his chute torched. Quoting him, the local paper said he frantically twisted and pulled on his risors, but no joy. So he hit his chest and skinned his harness. He was a free jumper and knew about body aerodynamics. He dived to get control and lifted up. Dive, lift and repeat. Until there was a fruit grove right underneath. At about 100', he pulled up hard. Who knows what momentum vectors he had, but he dropped like a stone, from 100', right onto a big grapefruit tree. A few internal injuries and several broken bones later, he was back on the news and skydiving again. An inspiration to a young lad. Matt

A friend of mine used to skydive. He got married to an older friend of mine and took her skydiving. She loved it. They had a regular club they jumped with. They were elsewhere when their friends went up, had a mid air collision and all died. Adrenaline junkies. Not me.

Former army jumper here and never jumped with anything but "round silk". I have known fellas with hundreds of civilian jumps who lost their lives in jumps so it matters not what experience level you are at. I anticipate an increase in jumpers' deaths when folks imitate this guy.

I know I'm not a thrill-seeker (far from it), and I will probably never make a jump, but IF I had too, I really expect to have a backup chute.

Only an idjit goes up without a reserve. I have a great scar on my right hand, and a great story, to back that up. This guy did it by the book. He didn't just jump & hope for the best. He was vastly experienced. He planned this out. A lot. He practiced it running a series of HALOs, and only after getting special dispensation to run HALO's (and that's not easy to do in this Feel Good society anymore). And to turn your back at the last second...man, THAT was the ballsey moment. That is the instant where even though you have done everything right, you know what's going to happen, you still put your life into the hands of Fate.
