Aditia -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn23 (8/17/2016 9:48:19 PM)

All I am doing these snow turns is preparing for Blizzard:

- Getting as much rail converted as possible using FBD and auto repair (Army HQ's). The Army HQs will go to a town close to the front on the last turn of snow.
- Spending AP to move support units to areas of the front where I think they will be needed most. All 88mm FlaK (LW mixed Bn.'s) will be concentrated where I see his concentrating the BBC.
- Spending AP to give infantry corps in important areas better commanders
- Moving mobile divisions to towns close to the front for rest and act as local or strategic reserves.
- I have increased infantry to 100% for all infantry divisions south of Oka. This way, I will have as much strength as possible everywhere, while I not yet know where is main pressure points will be. As soon as he attacks during blizzard, all TOE apart from critical areas will be dialled down to 70%. Edit: I actually dialed TOE back down on the last turn of snow, as manpower pool was running dry and I wanted enough to be able to reinforce the critical sectors during logistics phase after enemy first blizzard turn

I should add: Before this game I had never played past turn 7 as Germans in 1941, so everything but summer weather is all new to me. I only have some mud experience in the 43-45 campaign a few years ago, but at that point all you doing as Germans is dig in and slowly withdraw.

This turn, auto repair fails me and my reserve Corps at Rhzev can still not utilize the North-South line:

It is a bit of a disaster really, as this is also causing supply issues east of Moscow, and thereby delaying fort building.

Aditia -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn23 (8/17/2016 9:52:20 PM)

Karelia-Oka:

I decided to keep the weakest of the 5 excess infantry Corps in the north as a local Strategic reserve. The other 4 are either on or close to converted rail, waiting for repairs to be completed.

To guarantee that I will be able to use that crucial piece of rail in at max. 2 turns, I railed the FBD that was converting rail towards Kursk/Voronezh here, as I cannot keep relying on these moronic Army logistical staff officers.

Aditia -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn23 (8/17/2016 9:56:57 PM)

Oka-Stalino:

The main reason why I am desperate to get my reserves moving, is because I currently have Rumanians holding the critical hinge in the line (outlined in blue). They need to be relieved before I finish the first blizzard turn.

I have moved 2 Corps worth of fighter squadrons and the Rumanian airforce here to counter his air grouping in this area (outlined in black).

I will hold near Voronezh while I can, but as soon as there is a break I am willing to pull back to my stop line.

Aditia -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn23 (8/17/2016 10:00:02 PM)

Final screenie for this turn is the supply situation in the deep south:

Oh yeah, keeping track of enemy recon flights is a good way of gauging their intentions. Of course, recon flights can be part of Maskirovka [8D]

Aditia -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn23 (8/17/2016 10:05:09 PM)

More turns will be posted later this week, and you'll witness how I will be improvising myself through my first Blizzard :)
Next turn is the last turn of snow.

Edit, during mud I accidentally left Cherkassy ungarrisoned for 1 turn (as Rumanian units could not rail through the Hungarian garrison). To prevent partisan disasters I have kept the Hungarian/Italian airforces in the area on night missions, and Army HQ's loaded with construction Bn's are in the area. to get more completed redundant lines over the Dnepr.

chaos45 -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn23 (8/17/2016 11:04:48 PM)

You would be better served sending those extra infantry back to europe so they dont take winter attrition if you dont need them in Russia.

Probably good advice. But this point in time, I don't know whether they are needed :) Also, at the moment I have motorized forces holding the front that I want to relieve.

Aditia -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn24 (8/20/2016 7:24:28 PM)

Turn 24, last turn before the blizzard starts.

Karelia-Oka:

There is not much enemy concentration north of the Oka. Heaviest concentration is due east of Moscow and Opposing Yaroslav. Lines here are weaker than I would have liked due to slow fort building (supply issues causing that).

Manstein's Pz Corps is in reserve mode with 1 Pz Div. in Moscow as operational reserve.

Aditia -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn24 (8/20/2016 7:32:05 PM)

Oka-Stalino:

3 Pz Corps are in the Tula area to deal with the expected push there. I no longer have regiments holding the line. Weakest point in the line are the Romanian units on the major river at Voronezh, but it is not yet completely frozen so they should be allowed to dig another turn. At the southern end of my stop line I a have not yet been able to relieve the Romanians.

Instead of helping the Romanians dig I decide to use the bulk of 2 Pz Corps in the area to launch a spoiling attack. This must come as a surprise to my opponent as he has been complimenting me on my restraint during snow. Because of my passiveness during snow, his positions were not setup to deal with a sortie and I manage to displace a couple of fully loaded airbases.

Because this is a spoiling attack, instead of cutting supply I focus on routing out as many units as possible.

I think this will sufficiently delay any push in this crucial sector at the cost of attrition in my mobile units.

Aditia -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn24 (8/20/2016 7:34:45 PM)

Overview of the southern end of the line.

I realised rather late that the Romanians holding the entrances to the Crimea have been suffering really badly and I belatedly send a German light division to shore them up.

Aditia -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn24 (8/20/2016 7:37:20 PM)

TOE settings:

Almost all infantry divisions are set to 70%, to preserve manpower during the next logistics phase.

The objective is to make sure I can direct manpower next turn to the areas where the Soviets direct the axis' of their blizzard offensive.

Aditia -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn25 (8/20/2016 7:40:41 PM)

Turn 25, blizzard is here.

This turn an overview of the different sectors so you can see my defensive setup. I should have highlighted unit mode so you can see reserve setups.

I have spent most AP this turn to do the first replacements of Infantry Corps commanders in sectors that I suspect will be pressured.

Going North to South.

Aditia -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn26 (8/20/2016 7:49:19 PM)

Turn 26

Darbymcd launched his Blizzard attacks.
He is probing for weak spots in many areas and some breaks have occurred, but nothing too serious. Actually, when I check the battles when opening the turn, I see a lot of Holds:

Note that in some areas he received very high AFV losses.

Aditia -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn26 (8/20/2016 7:53:09 PM)

Next 3 screenshots show an overview of the front. Small Red Arrows are offensives that I judge to be limited in scope or of a diversionary nature. The big red arrows are offensives that he has committed significant weight to, with Calvary Corps in the vanguard and tank brigades/divisions ready to exploit.

Karelia-Oka:

Note that I have railed 3 Inf Corps South. I Corps is staying put on rail, as the only real OKH reserve to respond to any real crises.

Aditia -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn26 (8/20/2016 8:00:49 PM)

Oka-Kharkov

Some breaks at Tula. But because I expected a push here, I am not yet willing to withdraw. I counter attack the units that moved into the contested hex, reinforce the shoulders, and occupy the 2 hexes behind it with strong units to dig.

I think counter attacking certain hexes, with as much force as possible, is important. It denies easy follow up attacks next turn, inflicts damage to men, materiel, morale and fatigue, and in the best case routs units out. I do have a hold here and there, but these holds teach me valuable lessons on the initial CV ratios I need during blizzard for a comfortable attack.

Aditia -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn26 (8/20/2016 8:03:43 PM)

Sea of Azov

Quite some pressure at Stalino. But I finally was able to rail my reserve Corps across Russia, and I have 2 arriving here.

I think I can get them into the line before it breaks.

At the Crimea I was 1 MP short of moving the last light regiment into the line :(
Defensive value at Perekop is 7 CV =/
Because I assume a break out by Soviet forces there I have moved the Pz Div that was refitting at Z-town down here.

Aditia -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn26 (8/20/2016 8:05:51 PM)

A close up of the critical sectors:

Tula:

These lvl2 forts are a real pain for the Russians and I want to keep them.

Aditia -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn26 (8/20/2016 8:08:50 PM)

Stalino:

Here I do occupy a contested hex north of Stalino to give reinforcements time to arrive.

4 hexes North-West of Stalino there was a critical break in the line and the Elite 1st Mountain Div. and a Pz regiment are moved in to plug it and dig.

Finally production.

Vehicle attrition is real.

Aditia -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn26 (8/20/2016 8:13:09 PM)

Oh, one more for this turn.

A testament to how hard I have been hitting the Red Army in the summer: Very brittle units are committed by STAVKA this winter:

[image]local://upfiles/37963/EB16ADC3DE8A42E5A822D443DD7C7C84.jpg[/image]

Icier -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn26 (8/20/2016 11:37:09 PM)

A word of warning...early January the Romanians are very brittle.

chaos45 -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn26 (8/21/2016 1:39:15 AM)

The soviets are to weak to do much damaged----you can look at the counter strength numbers and see how weak his units are.

The German 1942 offensive should be brutal.

Aditia -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn26 (8/21/2016 2:24:27 PM)

What would be the counter strength you'd expect for Soviet units in this time in an average game Chaos?

smokindave34 -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn26 (8/21/2016 2:55:45 PM)

I would say an "average" Soviet division would have a CV of 2. So you would be seeing CV's of around 6 for a stack of 3 divisions.

Aditia -> RE: Aditia vs. Darbymcd Turn27 (8/21/2016 9:54:58 PM)

Turn 27 (Darbymcd has turn 33)

When I open the turn I see the joys of blizzard attrition (and this is mild winter rules):

Most of my casualties are from the elements. Soviet casualties are from combat.
