oaltinyay -> OT: Linux WITP:AE machine (8/4/2016 6:59:16 AM)

I have a very old laptop : HP 2610p. I got a deal for a SSD disk and will replace its original drive with that one. I'm thinking of also making it a Linux machine.

I want to configure that laptop so that it will only do games and some browsing and maybe some FLAC playing to my DAC.

Can this machine running 1.1 ghz with 4Gigs of ram and some flavor of linux ( I'M open to suggestions here ) power a reasonably fast WITP game ? Any experience on the lowest Ghz speed that witp runs ? On Wine ?

wdolson -> RE: OT: Linux WITP:AE machine (8/4/2016 7:25:49 AM)

That should be fine for AE.

Make sure the laptop isn't too old to have an SATA drive interface. Older computers have IDE interfaces and all SSD drives are going to come with an SATA (though some come with PCIe, which won't work on a laptop).

The main drive is ZIF SSD, I guess this PATA ?

It'll play just WITP, and maybe an Atari Emulator :) My very own WITP machine...

Is the processor at least 32-bit? IIRC the older 16-bit processors cannot handle memory in excess of about two gigs - maybe even less.

Indeed it's a 32bit ULV C2Duo I believe

Lowpe -> RE: OT: Linux WITP:AE machine (8/4/2016 3:56:57 PM)

For an OS try Peppermint 7 first I think.

I succeeded with Linux Mint which I believe is a derivative of that.

Does anyone know a good link how to install witp under Linux using wine ?

Already searched my friend my friend :), but couldnt get a link where it said mission success. I'll check this one right away.

Thx a lot !

ps. I am really surprised about the performance of the machine so far. It doesnt fly but it certinly performs under linux.

oaltinyay -> RE: OT: Linux WITP:AE machine (8/4/2016 6:58:47 PM)

here's another dumb question : can I install on these on special linux versions like arcade / audiophile versions ? I'ld like to make a machine that plays my FLac files to my DAC and at the same time play Stella and also WITP.

oaltinyay -> RE: OT: Linux WITP:AE machine (8/4/2016 7:11:02 PM)

Lowpe : once I install the game - what about the patches ? I need to install two more files. How do I do that ?

Process is almost the same...see post 5 in that thread.

wdolson -> RE: OT: Linux WITP:AE machine (8/5/2016 3:21:11 AM)

The computer new enough to run at least Win 7 x64:
http://www.cnet.com/products/hp-compaq-6910p/specs/

The processor is 64 bit. It will probably scream on Linux.

You have to go back a long ways to find a 16 bit processor. Those were phased out in the early 90s.

oaltinyay -> RE: OT: Linux WITP:AE machine (8/5/2016 7:14:40 AM)

Thank Lowpe ! Works like a P51D , I also run Witp:ae on OsX and this is way better in terms of performance. ( and the OsX machine is a i7 ! ) Only thing is the screen size but the laptop was an ultra portable anyways.

oaltinyay -> RE: OT: Linux WITP:AE machine (8/5/2016 7:27:43 AM)

Hmmm - can it be possible to run WITP:AE on a rasbery pi ? any ideas ?

wdolson -> RE: OT: Linux WITP:AE machine (8/5/2016 7:51:56 AM)

It can manage to run on any computer based on the x86 family of processors (or clones). The raspberry Pi runs on the ARM family of processors. There are versions of Linux for these processors, but AE will not run on them.

oaltinyay -> RE: OT: Linux WITP:AE machine (8/5/2016 8:33:46 AM)

Can we not run it on Wine ? Wine will take care of the emulation ?

Omat -> RE: OT: Linux WITP:AE machine (8/5/2016 11:39:52 AM)

Hello

Maybe this thread is interessting:

Omat

P.S.: Wine does not emulating! Wine = Wine Is Not an Emulator
