IdahoNYer -> OT - Good old games site (8/9/2016 6:25:25 PM)

Found a pretty good site for old (ancient to some folks) computer games: http://www.old-games.com

Downloaded a bunch of great old classics including some gems (if you can live with archaic graphics) that still play great and many even have the game manual.

For us WiTP AE forumites waiting for their next PBEM turn:
- Carrier Strike: Reasonably good CV vs CV battles in the Pacific
- Great Naval Battles Series: a classic in its day for tactical WWII ship to ship combat
- Action Stations: probably the BEST ship to ship WWII game ever done....if you can live with the interface and graphics today it still plays just like I remember back in the day.

and many, many others.

Most seem to play very very well on my Windows 10 machine. One game I can't get to work right yet is "Fighting Steel" which is a shame - but I'm still fiddling with it...

OMG [X(]

Rising-Sun -> RE: OT - Good old games site (8/9/2016 6:47:21 PM)

Hmm interesting, is that site safe? There no telling what you are downloading to your pc.

geofflambert -> RE: OT - Good old games site (8/9/2016 6:54:21 PM)

I'm downloading Fighting Steel as I write this. Bismark and Prinz Eugene you better watch out!

geofflambert -> RE: OT - Good old games site (8/9/2016 6:59:54 PM)

I'm the guinea pig I guess. E-SET didn't squawk about it. Windows said publisher could not be verified.

Macclan5 -> RE: OT - Good old games site (8/9/2016 7:01:58 PM)

Yes indeed it is safe.

I have used many times.

I have never downloaded Indy (Independent) Dev studio games; only mainstream "large studio" (even if bankrupt) old game I still love.

It is a "DRM free version" of Steam with most games being older than 2008 ~ now some 8 plus years.

They have Visa Mastercard and Paypal settlement so obviously some bank considers them legitimate. Microsoft security essentials for Windows 7 deemed it safe and since is is DRM free there is no need for active internet connection.

--

All games are / were updated to Windows 7 standards and therefore operated flawlessly; with Windows 10 I am not so certain.

In addition to Carrier Strike I can vouch for:

(1) The Baldurs Gate collection.
(2) Neverwinter Nights collection. Problems with a 256 color switch on Neverwinter Nights 1 but the forums link you easily.
(3) Icewind Dale collection.
(4) Railroad Tycoon 2,
(5) Panzer General 2
(6) Pacific General
(7) and Rollercoaster Tycoon (can't recall which version - my kids play it).

These at least all seem to work on Windows 10 as well with minimal or no fuss. I have not played extended hours on any of these for a few years.

Many of them go on sale for as little as a few (American converted to Canadian + premium) dollars i.e. $ 5-6 CAD vs $ 3 USD

--

I never heard of the Great Naval Battle series so any further game information and windows 10 capability would be appreciated.

Schanilec -> RE: OT - Good old games site (8/9/2016 7:04:22 PM)

Neat Site. Thanks for sharing.

geofflambert -> RE: OT - Good old games site (8/9/2016 7:05:58 PM)

Here's the detail page of the download. Why does it say 7-zip? I have 7-zip, do I need to unzip the file? Pay no heed to that woman in the background.

Oh you been messing around with Navyfield again?

Rising-Sun -> RE: OT - Good old games site (8/9/2016 7:23:43 PM)

There are two games I couldn't find, one is Birthright and the second is Destiny (old strategy game).

Btw they upgrade it to Win7, Win7 is bad. Hopefully they have it compatible with XP and Win10. You can run the game as admin and under XP though.

Lecivius -> RE: OT - Good old games site (8/9/2016 7:27:04 PM)

Sweet Baby Jesus. Great Naval Battles?!? I'll have to give this a go when I get home [&o]

geofflambert -> RE: OT - Good old games site (8/9/2016 7:36:27 PM)

What's this about?

Franciscus -> RE: OT - Good old games site (8/9/2016 7:52:44 PM)

Thanks for the tip.[&o]

A site to keep, no doubt!

I got Civil War Generals 2, and it works. Kind of hard on the eyes on a 27' screen, though [:D]

Regards

Had no problems with GNB 1 running on my Windows 10. old graphics just a bit hard on my eyes...

IdahoNYer -> RE: OT - Good old games site (8/9/2016 8:06:30 PM)

Here's what I've got running so far in addition to the ones I mentioned earlier:

101st Airborne - seems to run fine, but no manual so I'm lost as how to play.
Combat Mission 2 - runs OK, seems a bit sluggish though
Birth of the Federation - runs fine
Kingmaker - runs fine (loved the old Avalon Hill Kingmaker and this does seem like a pretty good transition...)
Western Front - runs fine
50 Mission Crush - Need to still fiddling with graphics - black aircraft icon on black terrain doesn't work.

Have plenty more to check out - subscribed for 30 days.

Most of these games I've had in the past, but haven't been able to play with changes to Windows over the years. Nice to seem them again!

Macclan5 -> RE: OT - Good old games site (8/9/2016 8:17:15 PM)

Edit Update:

https://www.gog.com/

I was referring to Good Old Games.com of GOG dot com...

Now I look closely they may not be one and the same. In fact it is NOT the same...

GOG.com is what I am referring to.

Cool, I will have to check that out.

geofflambert, that errors is related to DirectX. So you will need to find the right version for that to work.

That Birth of Federation is a good popular game, if you like Star Trek. I still have it on CD as well Birthright. But, Birthright wont install unless I made a WinXP OS drive.

Gog is a good site, but you have to pay for it. I got some good games included the Falcon Series, love that Falcon 3.0 and 4.0.

Macclan5 -> RE: OT - Good old games site (8/9/2016 8:38:42 PM)

True Rising... ....my comments were about paying for it..

I was stunned to see "old games.com" comparatively. Very interesting.

GOG is 'inexpensive' by most standards I would say; especially if you wait for a sale. Its also DRM (digital rights management) free which makes its library of games superior to Steam for example (opinion). In fact there are some games that cross over both sites I believe but I have never done the analysis.

This other site is equally impressive albiet I can only imagine what Civilization 2 or Warlords 3 will look like on my 5 year old rig...

Hurt eyes may be a classic AE forumite understatement [8D]

Lecivius -> RE: OT - Good old games site (8/9/2016 8:40:23 PM)

IDC, but do you need to pay for access to this site? GOG you need to buy the games. I'm just curious about how this site works.

<edit>

Oops, nm, just answered my own question [:D]

Now Fighting Steel is supported by NWS team, the creators of Steam and Iron naval simulator of the dreadnought era.

Reminds me of that old (word meaning black people) spiritual by Louis Armstrong:

Well, Helloooo, Halley
This is Louis, Halley
Its so nice to see your ***** where they belong!

geofflambert -> RE: OT - Good old games site (8/10/2016 2:07:52 AM)

BBfanboy, I like you a lot, I'm not sure whether you should edit out your post or not. When in doubt, edit it out.

szmike -> RE: OT - Good old games site (8/10/2016 8:18:43 AM)

Those old games made me think, are there any strategy games with ASCII graphics, Dwarf Fortress style?

KenchiSulla -> RE: OT - Good old games site (8/10/2016 10:34:20 AM)

It has the original warcraft games [8D]

dr.hal -> RE: OT - Good old games site (8/10/2016 6:16:27 PM)

I'm a bit confused as to what they have done to these games to make the workable on more recent operating systems (I have windows 7 Pro). I For example I have the original Silent Hunter, I also have Silent Hunter 2, 3 and 4. I can get none of them to work on my current Windows computer. When I got back to the publisher of the games, they tell me that they can not support games on my system and that there is nothing they can do (yet I KNOW others with a similar operating system do have the games running). SO my question is has this site done something to the game code to allow it to operate on more recent operating systems (as they say in their link at the bottom of the page)??? Hal
