Turn 61 (start of turn)

This time the alert is justified.
The German offensive makes little progress against our alerted defenses though.

Turn 61 (end of turn)

3rd shock army is sent North to help out and the Sblina river defenses West of Vyshny are strengthened. It's hard to see the Germans making much progress here.

As expected (and desired) a panzer army does cross the Don East of Rostov.
It surrounds 43rd army. One division evacuates from Azov.

Turn 62

The Germans wisely choose not to press on with their offensive North of Rzhev which yeilds only two rifle divisions and a brigade.

Aerial reconnaissance has played a vital role in this Summer 42 campaign, but there has been a heavy price to pay in terms of aircraft lost. There is now a critical shortage of recon aircraft and only 12 are being built each week so there are parts of the front that I can't afford to recon properly any more.

timmyab -> RE: timmyab (Sov) v Smokingdave (Axis) (10/7/2016 8:32:25 PM)

A lot of the armor from the Rzhev attack has gone missing again. One panzer division and a cavalry unit is spotted West of Tula and with no other clues available this is enough to send 3rd shock army back to Tula.

German infantry has been steadily pushing back our forces in this area for the last two months. We push back at them where possible but they are skilfull at protecting themselves from our counterattacks.

timmyab -> RE: timmyab (Sov) v Smokingdave (Axis) (10/7/2016 8:45:04 PM)

In the South the Axis are busy digesting the Rostov pocket and we leave them to get on with it in peace.

Six out of my eight available mountain divisions have been moved to this front in case they are needed here soon.

Turn 63

It's gone quiet everywhere except South of Tula where the German infantry continue to creep forwards.
This is a typical turn. They push us back in several places and we hit them back once.

This continues to be a great AAR - really nice to read one that is still well balanced into the summer of 1942.

as a clue of what is to come ... wait for WiTE2, lack of effective air recon capacity is leaving both sides pretty blind across most of the front. Some of this may be due to the need to balance out air stocks/production, but it also reflects the new realities of fixed airbases (forcing dispersal and leaving some parts of the front poorly covered).

Its a lot more *interesting* for both players. Much easier to lose all track of the Pzrs which is downright scary (in my current PBEM I don't have a clue where at least 3 Pzr Corps are). While I've just pulled off a major build up on a previously quiet sector and overwhelmed an incautious axis advance.

timmyab -> RE: timmyab (Sov) v Smokingdave (Axis) (10/9/2016 1:27:12 PM)

That's interesting.
For what it's worth here's what I'd like to see. Maybe WITE2 air model will be better able to handle this.

Air recon capability to rely on air superiority. Recon aircraft should find it difficult to penetrate areas that are controlled by enemy fighters. Obviously this would mainly handicap the Soviets in 41/42 and the Axis 43/45.
Units that have not moved to become gradually more difficult to detect.

Soviets to have an extra intelligence source.
Axis units within a certain radius of partisan units (active or non-active) are detected. The closer they are the higher the detection level. Maybe Axis units in Soviet towns and cities could have a chance to be detected also.

I think there does need to be some capacity to detect enemy buildups because weekly turns means that surprise attacks are particularly devastating.

Turn 64 (start of turn)

Again German armor tests our defenses and again the attack is contained.

Turn 64 (end of turn)

Although it will never be admitted publicly, secretly the decision has been made at the highest level to abandon Tula to it's fate.

Air losses are horrible.
My fighters have just started to rack up some kills though.

Turn 66

Tula falls and German armor pushes on towards Ryazan.

timmyab -> RE: timmyab (Sov) v Smokingdave (Axis) (10/12/2016 11:18:59 AM)

Rostov also falls this week.
The Axis show no urgency to push South.

timmyab -> RE: timmyab (Sov) v Smokingdave (Axis) (10/12/2016 11:55:26 AM)

Turn 67

The Germans evacuate the Ryazan salient.

Intelligence reports suggest that the enemy Summer offensive is probably over. They appear to be preparing defenses against a possible Soviet Winter offensive.

timmyab -> RE: timmyab (Sov) v Smokingdave (Axis) (10/12/2016 12:37:35 PM)

Turn 69

The Axis are withdrawing behind the Don at Rostov. Comrade Stalin is overheard singing in the bath after hearing this news.

He orders the Transcaucasus Front plus 1st tank army to pursue and destroy the fleeing enemy.

timmyab -> RE: timmyab (Sov) v Smokingdave (Axis) (10/12/2016 1:37:54 PM)

Axis 42 campaign summary.

Overall I'd say that Summer 42 has been a success. Moscow was never threatened and the Axis advance in the South has been contained behind the Don.
Losses were accceptable at 48 inf divs, 15 inf brigades, 10 armor brigades, 2 armor corps, 2 cav div, 1 cav corps and 1 airborne brigade.

Dave did a good job with the difficult position he had in Spring 42 and strategically I think he made the right decisions. The early Summer turns in particular required very precise play from me to avoid a disaster.

The Axis OOB is very strong and breaking it down is not going to be an easy task. The German armor is still and will remain powerfull and dangerous.

Turn 73

Stalin's pursue and destroy order for the Transcaucasus Front is recinded after Zhukov urges caution. There is now a giant no-man's land between Rostov and Krasnodar.

timmyab -> RE: timmyab (Sov) v Smokingdave (Axis) (10/23/2016 12:06:13 PM)

Turn 74

3rd Shock Army makes a show of strength in the Valdai hills.
This attack is mainly for psychological purposes. Large scale offensives are still well beyond the capabilities of the Red Army.

timmyab -> RE: timmyab (Sov) v Smokingdave (Axis) (10/26/2016 6:21:08 PM)

Turn 76

The Crimea defenses get an upgrade.
Some German units have shown up here recently and I want to strengthen the bottlenecks before the rivers freeze.

I'm not sure why Dave defends the hex circled [&:]

timmyab -> RE: timmyab (Sov) v Smokingdave (Axis) (11/2/2016 6:43:31 AM)

Turn 80

This game has entered a kind of Mexican standoff phase. Dave is preserving his force and I haven't built enough rifle corps yet to take the fight to the enemy.

This week though there is a strong attack South of Tula. The line holds and the newly formed 5th Shock Army (Tolbukhin) is brought in to reinforce the area.

6th airborne corps is also brought in. I usually have these airborne corps in deep defense near rail lines and they are often first on the scene when reinforcements are needed.

timmyab -> RE: timmyab (Sov) v Smokingdave (Axis) (11/2/2016 5:57:42 PM)

Turn 81

The panzer spearhead swings North to trap four divisions from Western front. There will be no attempt made to save them.

timmyab -> RE: timmyab (Sov) v Smokingdave (Axis) (11/6/2016 11:55:31 AM)

Turn 83

1943 is here and our rifle corps conversion program is in full swing. Three or four rifle corps are being formed every week starting with the guards. Where these corps are concentrated they can gain local superiority and push the Germans out of their fortifications.

Here two rifle corps and a mech corps are supported by 1st tank army.

timmyab -> RE: timmyab (Sov) v Smokingdave (Axis) (11/7/2016 10:33:54 PM)

Turn 84

German infantry reoccupy the ground and we throw them out again. This time 1st tank army conducts a follow up attack and Rotmistrov is keen to push even further North, but Zhukov, aware of the strong German armored divisions in the area, orders him to withdraw East of the Don (not shown in this screenshot)

The first attack succeeds (barely) in spite of the intervention of 16th motorized division.

timmyab -> RE: timmyab (Sov) v Smokingdave (Axis) (11/8/2016 12:42:30 PM)

Turn 85

Overview of the whole front highlighting areas of no man's land.

These areas have no defensive terrain or fortifications so neither side feels the need to risk occupying them and I wonder if this is a game design fault or whether in fact this sort of thing happened in the real war?
