rbilheimer -> Supply & Support in Guadalcanal Scenario (9/12/2016 3:13:44 AM)

I’m progressing on my learning curve on this great game and I have moved on from the Coral Sea Scenario. I’m having quite a bit of trouble with the logistics aspects of the game.

1. In short, what’s the basic approach to getting supplies forward to Lunga and Tulagi, and even to the rear areas of Noumea, Efate and Lugaville? Do supplies automatically arrive from the West Coast USA and or/Pearl at Noumea? Seems like the only area that has an abundance of supplies is Australia. I started an automatic convoy system from there to Noumea, but it seems a little awkward. Plus, I’m not at all clear how I will be able to move supplies forward from there (in Noumea) without shorting Noumea and the other bases’ needed supplies also.

2. “Support” is also confusing. It seems like all my front line LCU units and bases are short of needed “support” points. I guess I could move a base force unit forward from Noumea or one of my other rear bases, but that would short them. Again as above, do I move something in from Australia? Again, seems a bit awkward. I see that HQ units provide tons of support, but the prime candidate to move to Lunga would be Douglas MacArthur in Brisbane. I’m not even sure I can move him and his HQ unit there and it seems highly unhistorical to do that. I don’t think any top level HQ’s moved onto Guadalcanal during the campaign there. There has to be another way.

3. Along these same lines, I’d like to start repairing/building the airfield at Lunga. I don’t see where I can get any construction & aviation support units forward from some of my rear areas without cannibalizing them and rendering them ineffective for ongoing operations. Perhaps this is the essence of the US problems early in the war (nothing available in any quantity anywhere)!

4. I took Lunga early on and I want to finish the job by expelling the Japs from Tassafaronga. However, I cant’t get my LCU’s to go over to either “Deliberate” or “Shock.” They are fully supplied, but short of “Support” points. Is that the reason? I seem to remember seeing somewhere that short supplies or support will keep them from offensive operations.

Thanks in advance, everyone.

ad 2) In WiTP:AE, units have inadequate support by design, almost all of them. The units can still function without the needed support, you will just see some disabled squads. It is the same for both Japs and Allies.

Only HQ units have a surplus of support squads. If your unit is very badly disabled you can "park" it in the hex with an HQ unit for faster undisabling.

ad 4) Strange. In order to conduct Deliberate or Shock attack, the unit must be a proper combat unit. Base Force, artillery, HQ, anti-aircraft, construction unit cannot attack, they can only Defend or Bombard (if they have proper artillery devices).

Inadequate support or supply still enables units to attack, though lack of supply means you assault value will be reduced drastiaclly.

Hello, and welcome to the game :)

ad 1) Supply and fuel are rare in this scenario (as was IRL) - IIRC there are two bases where supply and fuel are getting "created" automatically at the end of the turn (besides the usual Resources-LI-HI) - these should be Brisbane and Noumea. When you open the Base screen you may notice that on the left you have something like "Supply: 7434/500" - that means a total of 7434 supply is on hand and 500 is being generated daily.

ad 2) Support is actually short in most combat units as Yaab wrote. You can have a unit in combat for some time, but for full recuperation you need Support - thus moving unit to some better supported base could be required - as IRL was quite standard. But for scenario of Guadalcanal length it is not so necessary unless you have some unit down in 30s/40s with morale. Disruption and fatigue tends to be lowered by not being in combat and training/rest.

ad 3) Guadalcanal operation was codenamed "Watchtower", but it was called "Shoeastring" - and not for want of reason!

ad 4) Are your combat units in the Tassafaronga hex already? If no, you have to march/land them there. All combat in this game occurs "within" hex, not between two adjacent hexes.

Thanks Yaab and Barb. This is helpful. I guess I had a senior moment with the Tassafaronga question... as you suggested, Barb, I weas not in the hex. I was still in Lunga. Hence, no ability to change to Shock.

In addition to HQ units for support, look for any USA BF. These have 200 support squads (but no engineers). Support squads represent medical staff, cooks, admin staff, supply staff, etc. that make life so much easier for guys living in foxholes.

The marines have some engineer squads and will repair the airfield when not busy fighting, but you really should get an engineer unit or BF there that has more engineers. You need to build the AF to level 2 to conduct offensive air operations and you need some air support to keep the aircraft flying. But everything needs supply so get that to the island first!

Lotsa luck!
