Just a hunch. Last two steps are sound and directx. So maybe update the sound driver and reinstall directx and see if it helps?

By reinstall do you mean rerun DXSetup.exe, or uninstall and download another one from Microsoft?

Bingeling -> RE: Game never loads after the Loading Splash Screen (The bit after you click "Play Distant Worlds") (9/24/2016 7:40:49 AM)

I would rerun the one provided by the game.

Whalelad -> RE: Game never loads after the Loading Splash Screen (The bit after you click "Play Distant Worlds") (9/24/2016 9:04:09 AM)

I've rerun the DirectX Setup, didn't work. I'm going to try the microsoft version.

Bingeling -> RE: Game never loads after the Loading Splash Screen (The bit after you click "Play Distant Worlds") (9/24/2016 11:52:42 AM)

I am not sure how far you got, btw. Do you see the intro movie? If not, disable it. How to should be easy enough to find on this forum.

edit: Bad typo :)

Whalelad -> RE: Game never loads after the Loading Splash Screen (The bit after you click "Play Distant Worlds") (9/24/2016 12:16:33 PM)

I get to the splash screen, and the game just closes there. No intro, no menu.

I've restored my PC to factory settings and am trying again to set it up.

Bingeling -> RE: Game never loads after the Loading Splash Screen (The bit after you click "Play Distant Worlds") (9/24/2016 1:08:07 PM)

In the main game folder, file startup.ini.

Change: playmovie 1
To: playmovie 0

And see if that helps.

Whalelad -> RE: Game never loads after the Loading Splash Screen (The bit after you click "Play Distant Worlds") (9/25/2016 2:45:14 PM)

Nope, didn't work.

zakblood -> RE: Game never loads after the Loading Splash Screen (The bit after you click "Play Distant Worlds") (9/25/2016 3:02:34 PM)

you need to run the DirectX Setup that comes with the game as admin, disable your antivirus or at least check the event logs

aprezto -> RE: Game never loads after the Loading Splash Screen (The bit after you click "Play Distant Worlds") (4/18/2017 5:59:52 AM)

So I appear to be having the same issues here.

Fresh install of Windows 10 Home
Run install - upgrade to latest patch.
Only get to first splash screen and games stops.
DW-Crashdump file says I don't have directX directsound
DXdiag says directX is version 12 (where game installs 9.c) dxdiag states all hardware and software has passed test

try reinstall of game - note it will not install .net 4 as a later version is already installed.

Mediaplayer is installed and I'm able to use it.

try running game in compatibility of windows 7.

so - stuck now.

VPaulus -> RE: Game never loads after the Loading Splash Screen (The bit after you click "Play Distant Worlds") (4/18/2017 9:50:09 AM)

Open the game installation folder, find a subfolder named "redist" and open it. Inside you should find a file named "DXSETPUP.exe", please run it as administrator (click with right mouse button over the file, and selected "Run as administrator from the drop down menu).
Start the game and check if the issue is persisting.

Vpaulus

thank you for responding - much appreciated.

Success!! So it appeared to be the .net versions that weren't installed - and that by following your advice were forced to install.

Other points to note. I have turned on Windows 7 compatibility on the main distantworlds.exe - not sure if this is strictly necessary - but it works now so not changing it.

regards

I am having the same issue. Game runs fine up until I patched it to 1.512 then it you get to the 'filling black holes" ..."inserting orbital motion" and then nothing. It fails to launch. Anyone got an hunch?

UPdate: I uninstalled, reinstallled updated to 1.9152 and it worked. I was using improved ai mod and I think that was why I was crashing.
