I went back in 2011, Amazing place. Bovington also pretty spectacular.

Best wishes

Roger

Also on the list, but I'd love to go with someone more knowledgeable about the armour/arty than I am. There is a small land warfare museum at the IWM in Duxford, and some cool stuff there, but nothing like what I've heard about Bovington.

They did have an IS-2 Stalin which I've not seen, and it is a monster!

That one is from Duxford.....

There is a submarine in San Francicso that is well worth the visit. You can traipse all through it and marvel at how confined and mechanical it is in there.

Untersee boat in Chicago. The US sub used in the movie Red October is up in the Northwest somewhere, Portland or around there I think. I was on it.

Not as crew, mind you.

Went there on my trans USA trip - that was when we had a currency worth anything!

BBfanboy -> RE: OT: Duxford IWM (10/6/2016 12:16:54 AM)

I thought the one up in Chicago was U-505, one of only two U-boats captured during the war? The Hunt for Red October would have featured subs that were a bit more nuclear. Do you perhaps refer to the movie "U-571" which was set in the WWII era?

I was confusing you, which I am very good at. Yes, I do believe the U-505 is on the Chicago waterfront. I was also referring to the sub that played "the USS Dallas" in the movie which is not and was not a nuclear sub in the movie or in reality and it is located in Portland, I think.

geofflambert -> RE: OT: Duxford IWM (10/6/2016 3:44:21 AM)

It appears I've lost my mind. The USS Dallas is still in service and was used in the film "Red October". I remember being on a decommissioned US sub in the NW somewhere and must have conflated it with the Dallas. The Dallas is nuclear powered and the boat I toured was not.

The one in Portland is the USS Blueback, SS-581, the last non-nuclear attack sub.

(A nice pic of it here by someone named Craig Paup).

There's an artillery museum near Ft. Sill that I'd like to go see. It's got all manner of self propelled artillery that I haven't seen elsewhere and it's a day's drive away but I don't get out much anymore.

I've been, if you go check in advance. Last time I went the indoor part was closed and the times its open are rather limited, or by appointment, or something. Although it could've changed again as its been a number of years since I've been. The outside, which has most of the stuff, is of course available.

Hey, just thought of this. I'm supposed to go to OKC in June, maybe we could meet up. I'll PM you when the time gets closer.

Been on her, and the Liberty/Victory ship tied up there too.

Hard to believe but maybe you were victim of an alien abduction?!

fcooke -> RE: OT: Duxford IWM (10/9/2016 1:27:37 AM)

Duxford is awesome. One can spend a day there between all the exhibits. Go on an airshow day and you will be in hog heaven. IWM at Hendon also worth 1/2 a day in my opinion - and reachable by tube. And of course there is the main IWM in London. That could take a few days to get through, but not too far from HMS Belfast, which is also a treat. Have never made it to Bovington. Just got to London tonight so maybe that's my day trip tomorrow.....

And then some... I simply get lost in these places when I'm there, its like time stands still.

And if anyone wants to grab a pint or any other beverage, please let me know and I will buy......the better half is still in the States....
