Vetkin -> Engineers, wunder infantry? (4/23/2003 10:04:44 AM)

I think engineers are one of the best all-around infantrymen in the SP:WAW game. They are fairly good against infantry, pretty good against tanks, and can lay mines, making an area much more deadlier than it actually seems to be.

There are also a few kinds of engineers, including the FT Engineers which carry flamethrowers that give them a pretty good chance of destroying any tank regardless of its armor. (Or at least forcing the crew out.)

I don't know of a better infantry unit than the engineers of every country pound per pound... Maybe the SS for the Germans?

I agree with alot of what you said, but think the mission itself dictates the best infantry. In a long range fight, or when speed is called for, then Airborne or SS (etc) take the cake. Get in close, in the city, trees, jungle (etc), then look out for those Engineer boys!

Goblin-A Goblin loves his Airborne and Rangers:D

challenge -> (4/23/2003 10:16:46 AM)

also the Rangers for the Americans. The problem with egineers is the cost. For the price of a company of German Pioneers you can get a company and a half of PzGren. If you want to field a sizable force engineers are good support, but you don't get enough for the cost to cover a wide area. And if you're into historical unit mixes, there was about 1 plt for each company or two of regulars.

That said: on assaults I like for the ability to clear building blocks and towns, as well as mines; on defense they are incredable at setting up defenses for the rear VHs. :D

Belisarius -> (4/23/2003 1:14:05 PM)

Engineers are a must-have in just about any battle. :) Since they are a bit pricey, I usually keep them to about one platoon/infantry company. I keep them in the rear areas defending sensitive points. If the battle goes well, they move forward.

I assume "slow down" is relative.... :p :rolleyes: :D

Vetkin -> (4/23/2003 5:18:09 PM)

I have a good experience with conscripts, 2 platoons of them or so holding back a couple of Tigers... :D

Goblin: Engineers can be paradropped too, hopefully not in the midst of some enemy troops :)

True, but they take more suppression. I was actually refering to their ground speed.

Also, the trrops that flame engineers drop on had better get them quick...:eek:

Engineers are great. I usually use them to take out mines and fortifications and for urban fighting. I find the German flamethrowing engineers the most useful since their flamethrowers can decimate inf at close range and even knock out enemy armour.

I also tend to make heavy use of either Waffen SS inf or Commando units (depeding on if I'm playing either my German or Canadian custom campaign) and usually relegate standard infantry as either tank riders to bear the brunt of an enemy infantry close assault on my tanks or garrisoning objective areas that I've captured during an assault or meeting engagement.

VikingNo2 -> (4/24/2003 5:48:49 PM)

Marines !

Mission dependent ofcourse, if you want to take out infantry, then the F platoon or the Raiders

If you want to attack anything else the Marine Assault squad, Flametrower, Bazooka and a Satchle charge whats not to love.

In H2H they also have a regular squad that come with a flame thrower

But I supposed you could call me bias:rolleyes:

MOTHER -> engineers and friends (4/24/2003 7:00:06 PM)

Theres some pretty useful info about these units posted in the few replies above,Thanks for the injection of pluses and minuses about these units that are certainly apprieciated by every player of the game-lots of food for thought.:)

Kanonenfutter -> too expensive (4/27/2003 11:22:45 PM)

They are too expensive and under fire there are a lots of victims. I think the best foot troops are US Rangers with Bazookas or German SS troops with Panzerfaust 60.

Frank W. -> (4/28/2003 1:56:48 AM)

rangers with m9 are among the best units in the game !

Raskolnikov -> Engineers (4/28/2003 5:57:15 AM)

Engineers frequently have lower FC than regular troops, making them less effective for ranged combat. Useful really as assault troops in a specialised role; difficulty lies in getting them to their objective.

I have noticed that the AI will attack Engineers before other Inf units - so even a commander that poor recognises their potential danger.

Vetkin -> (4/28/2003 9:06:51 PM)

To get engineers to their destination, invest in some HTs :D I tried to place them in gun teams once and it took so long for them to arrive (well I mis-deployed them.) and got shot up as soon as they were in range... Kinda cool though, if I remember correctly I was playing against viking, me as brits and him as germans in the desert; he said it looked like a scene from Ben Hur as 20+ chariots rush across the desert hehehe

Belisarius -> (4/28/2003 9:13:57 PM)

I usually don't use engineers in assault, but move them up to the front when it's secured. If they have to be in the first line, I agree with vetkin - HTs are the way to go if you can afford. Pricey, yes, but as previously pointed out, they aren't any use at range. :)

Belisarius -> (4/28/2003 9:16:16 PM)

Ignore my horrible grammar. I stayed up writing a report until 3:30 this morning. :p

challenge -> (4/28/2003 9:39:43 PM)

As the wagons had four wheels, I would think they would appear more like Celtic shock troops attacking the Romans, but the imagery works. :p

Wagons and chariots worked against spears and balista, but for some reason they don't seem to do to well against artillery and machineguns. :D

WhiteRook -> (4/29/2003 3:15:47 AM)

Pound for pound I'll take the U.S. Marines over them all, you want some bodies a** kicked they are the men to call! Uh-Ra! :D

Vetkin -> (4/30/2003 11:57:18 AM)

Some marine units are good, though some (in my experience) actually are crap, namely the Marine Para squad... I have to give the USMC something though, they rarely ever break or fall back and this more than makes up for whatever shortcomings they might have. (very few)

WhiteRook -> (5/1/2003 3:19:03 AM)

Yeah, I have never had experiance with the para squads - I will have to play around with them some time! I mainly use the the normal units and Raiders. (my personal favorite) :D :D

Vetkin -> (5/1/2003 10:50:02 AM)

Oh yeah, Raiders are very good :D What speed and resilience
