You can, of course, void your vote by writing some witty comment about the quality of the candidates, and the election can even be cancelled if too many people do that, however, the required void rates are so high (I think it is something like 66%) that for all purposes it is not going to affect the results.

and actually, some years ago, there was this "election ink" you were supposed to dip your middle finger in. But this was more to avoid fraud (somebody voting multiple times) than to recognize you as a voter. Technology and better times had made this obsolete, at least in Peru [:)]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Election_ink

I saw the election ink method being used in an Arab country (can't remember which) where a woman was proudly showing her purple finger because she had just got the right to vote. I thought - there's a good idea. Young people will see all the purple fingers and know that when they come of age they should vote too.

Then the next day I heard that there were instances of women having their purple finger cut off by Arab men who did not accept their equality or freedom - what a horrible doctrine! After that I was not in favour of the purple ink method. [sm=nono.gif]

Some states have instituted restrictions to keep people from voting. In Alassippi for example, you must show up with a shrubbery. You can see one of their election officials here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIV4KLCmJ98

Big B -> RE: How I Planned to Spend Election Day (11/8/2016 9:36:13 PM)

I voted several days ago (absentee ballot)
I am avoiding ALL media today...well, honestly I do that everyday anyway - but especially today.
I will drink some good red wine tonight, and consider the Gorn's words carefully ([:D])

m10bob - YES! Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes from BBC is THE Best! (I had to buy the entire series on DVD some years back)...so maybe I won't worry too much about seppuku after all [:D]

Voted...went to see my new Gastroenterologist...will avoid the ramblings and self-proclaimed pundits of the media for the rest of the day.

Good time to watch the old BBC Sherlock Holmes stories with Jeremy Brett...(who was just meant for the role.)

JB; why did that guy have to die so young? I think he was poisoned. Maybe someone should look into that.

wdolson -> RE: How I Planned to Spend Election Day (11/9/2016 12:30:28 AM)

I live in a state that is 100% mail in, so I voted with a cat in my lap. I started voting two weeks ago, but didn't finish until late last week. In any case the way Washington does it does make voting easy.

This has been a very weird election cycle. I think we're living the Chinese curse.

panzer cat -> RE: How I Planned to Spend Election Day (11/9/2016 1:28:30 AM)

Held my nose and did my civic duty. The good part of the day was helping my 11 year old son pick out gear for his first hike on the Appalachian trail.

Big B -> RE: How I Planned to Spend Election Day (11/9/2016 3:06:56 AM)

Polls have closed in 48... look at the results so far

panzer cat -> RE: How I Planned to Spend Election Day (11/9/2016 3:15:52 AM)

Kind of shocking.

Big B -> RE: How I Planned to Spend Election Day (11/9/2016 3:24:28 AM)

A look at the House of Representatives votes (individuals) indicates how the Presidential votes should be going...not entirely shocking...let's see how they finish up

warspite1 -> RE: How I Planned to Spend Election Day (11/9/2016 4:39:57 AM)

Woke up this morning here in little old Englandsville and [X(]

MrFreeze -> RE: How I Planned to Spend Election Day (11/9/2016 4:52:33 AM)

Here, on the west coast, it's a shocker, its going to be a hard night [:(]

Orm -> RE: How I Planned to Spend Election Day (11/9/2016 5:15:28 AM)

Well, that went as expected.

Big B -> RE: How I Planned to Spend Election Day (11/9/2016 5:27:02 AM)

It looks pretty solid at 10:25 PST - will there be last minute shenanigans?

The only surprise so far to me is that it doesn't look rigged at this point - give it 12 hours and we'll see

warspite1 -> RE: How I Planned to Spend Election Day (11/9/2016 5:28:41 AM)

When you say shenanigans do you mean something dodgy - or just a few surprise results for Clinton to swing it back to her?

But all the indicators yesterday afternoon were suggesting a Clinton victory.

Big B -> RE: How I Planned to Spend Election Day (11/9/2016 5:51:05 AM)

No - to be totally clear I mean TOTALLY DODGY and UNDERHANDED

looks like that won't happen this year

warspite1 -> RE: How I Planned to Spend Election Day (11/9/2016 5:58:21 AM)

How did the pollsters get it sooooo wrong?

Big B -> RE: How I Planned to Spend Election Day (11/9/2016 6:05:38 AM)

Because (and I'm sure the kool-aid drinking delusionists here will correct me) the Polsters are the Media...they don't report news - they are simply propagandists who try their best to shape opinion... Pravda is more reliable than the Media

Canoerebel -> RE: How I Planned to Spend Election Day (11/9/2016 6:08:51 AM)

My impression is that the pollsters did a pretty darn good job. The inherent difficulty in a close election is that turnout may not match poll results. If one party is jazzed and the other isn't, turnout for the former can be disproportionate, swinging the result by a few percent. That's what happened here in many of the close states like Florida and North Carolina.

The biggest surprise was the "Iron Belt" states like Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin. But both parties knew something was up there and spent an inordinate amount of time the past few days campaigning there. You can say a lot of states were the "nail in the coffin," but I'd say it was Wisconsin. I don't think anybody saw that coming.

Orm -> RE: How I Planned to Spend Election Day (11/9/2016 6:15:39 AM)

Pollsters usually have a large number who do not answer. They do not always follow the exact same pattern as those that do answer.

And some people lie but I suspect those are rather few.

warspite1

Okay, to be clear I mean what we call the 'exit polls'. Do you have them over there?

The ones here got the last election frighteningly accurate (given its such a seemingly small number that are polled). Indeed when the exit poll was announced (right after the booths closed) the talking heads being interviewed were all saying it was impossible and the exit pollsters had got it incredibly wrong!

Big B -> RE: How I Planned to Spend Election Day (11/9/2016 6:23:56 AM)

It means simply - wake the F#*k up and understand what the Media does is - SHAPE news - not objectively report news - for the last umpteen years.
If you can't (not warspite1 - I mean everyone) understand that - you're gonna be dumbfounded by everything you will see happening across the globe in the coming years.

wdolson -> RE: How I Planned to Spend Election Day (11/9/2016 7:53:18 AM)

Much as I would like to let this run, I don't want to get in trouble with Matrix.
