Thank you to all vets, both here and in freedom-loving countries around the world.

My grandfather fought in WW1 and as part of the war for Latvian independence. My uncle was drafted into the German army at the end of WW2 and was wounded on the Eastern Front. My father served in the US army during the 50s, though never in combat. My wife has a family history going back before the American Revolution, with ancestors in almost all of America's wars, including the youngest general in the Union army.

Remember seeing something somewhere else that is related to 11.11.11 and it was a bad omen. Not sure what I saw that at, could be something else.

Thanks for starting this thread, Warspite. My father was a World War II vet, was wounded three times while seeing action in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and France--where he was captured--and was a German POW for the last six months of the war. Dad's three brothers were also in the Army during World War II but only the youngest one saw any action and was killed during the Battle of the Bulge. As wings7 posted about his father, I think mine and my uncle are smiling down on us, too. For what it's worth, I served with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam.

Happy Veterans Day everyone!

Thanks for posting this Rob.
That poem... really haunting.

We used to celebrate 11/11 as "Armistice Day"(the end of WW I), it's now a holiday called "Veterans Day" to encompass the veterans in peacetime and in all our wars, for they all mattered...

My uncle was with the 328th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division and died just south of Bastogne--he was wounded 24 December 1944 and died two days later. My father's unit was attached to Patton's 3rd Army according to a newspaper clipping I have from 1944, but I don't remember which unit he was in; I'd have to look at his discharge for that information and I don't have the time to look for it right now--my old files aren't easily accessed.

Chickenboy -> RE: 11th Day, 11th Hour, 11th Month....... (11/13/2016 3:45:12 AM)

I just attended the funeral of my uncle. Near as we can figure, he served in the 28th signal company with the 28th infantry division. He marched through Paris during its liberation. He served during the Hurtgen campaign. Later, he was present during the division's decimation during the 'Battle of the Bulge'. He related to my father the stress of the event, firing his carbine into a truck full of Falshirmjager near Wiltz and seeing his buddies cut down beside him. His column ambushed, he had to ford a frozen stream to escape while his buddies perished.

God bless you, uncle. You did your duty and I am immensely proud of you.
