Milman -> Mining (12/18/2016 7:00:52 AM)

There are at least two msg in game which tell me that i should mine enemy ports. Is that posible or that is something for future versions of game ?

Yes, in the future.

EDIT: Oops, I didn't realize this is functioning now. See Bill's response below for the correct answer [:)]

Hi

The messages relate to the ports off Canada and the US coast, as if you place naval units in the marked hexes it will reduce supply and income from their resources.

It's mentioned under Raiding Locations on page 19 of the Manual, though the accompanying image is on the following page.

I too wondered if the mining of ports feature was implemented or not...

The statement in the manual is still somewhat vague in this regard as I would expect only the U-boats would be able to lay the mines.

The manual states:

"Raiding Locations – place naval units on these
locations to damage your opponent’s economy".

Does this refer to the fact that any naval unit could damage the opponent's economy?
And what about whether the unit needs to be in raiding mode for a surface vessel and whether a sub needs to be in hunting mode?

I would expect that for laying mines, a sub would be able to do this submerged, as was the case, and therefore able to do so while in silent mode.

Finally and if this really does apply only to mining ports, why are the ports off Canada and the US coast the only ports that can be mined - i.e., what about Axis ports and waterways?

It appears it is abstracted.
Units do not lay mines. They just block the port to reduce supply and resource points.

BillRunacre -> RE: Mining (12/18/2016 7:20:27 PM)

The type of naval unit or its raiding setting doesn't affect this, placing the unit in one of the hexes will trigger a loss of enemy income. But they will likely come hunting for you within a short period of time!

It seems much more risky than just visiting the convoy routes ... so is there any advantage in doing this instead of just raiding convoys?

BillRunacre -> RE: Mining (12/19/2016 4:41:59 PM)

This could be useful if you feel that the enemy fleets are a long way away, at the bottom of the sea, or you want to set a trap.

Ah, ok. [:)]

having a mine laying option for uboats would be nice, when in port select a mine laying option, (load mines instead or torps) then the subs could lay mines but not shoot ships or interdict convoys.

sPzAbt653 -> RE: Mining (12/22/2016 3:43:53 AM)

I tried mining with a U-Boat at Halifax, and the resources of Halifax and Springhill Mine both took losses each turn, which seems to work as expected. However, both resources took hits at the end of each sides turn, which I think means twice a turn, and I don't know if that is what is expected, so I thought I should mention it.

BillRunacre -> RE: Mining (12/22/2016 4:51:12 PM)

That is right, your presence impedes local shipping, and is effective in both side's turns. This does make it more useful to do, but whether it is a good thing to do depends on other circumstances too, such as the likely enemy reaction to your doing so.

sPzAbt653 -> RE: Mining (12/22/2016 7:23:44 PM)

Yeah, I am hotseating a playtest so there is no 'enemy' reaction [;)]
Thanks for the confirmation that it is supposed to work that way !

Edit: Are these Naval Mines not mentioned in the manuals? I searched all three for 'mining' and 'mines' and didn't see anything.

Those words aren't used, but the concept is mentioned under Raiding Locations on page 19 of the Manual, with an accompanying image on the following page.
