I searched the forums but could not find this particular answer. Is there a way to have an aircraft at scenario start at a particular altitude... currently when I 'add unit' to the scenario my aircraft are starting in flight at 36000 ft ASL Thanks

Use the altitude descriptor (it's in metres) http://commandlua.github.io/#Unit
