bush -> Corsair question (1/12/2017 8:06:04 PM)

What is the date for the original F4U-1 to get drop tanks? I have never been able to get Tracker to work, so that is not an option, nor is looking in the files.

Thank you!

Mike

Look in the editor, Tracker does not have it. It is October, 1943.

bush -> RE: Corsair question (1/13/2017 2:19:38 AM)

Thanks much. Just 2 more months to go!

crsutton -> RE: Corsair question (1/13/2017 3:20:38 AM)

It gets drop tanks at the same time the second generation Corsair goes into production. So you will not get any more F4Us but those that you have will now have drop tanks. And the new plane will be better too. It's a win-win. [;)]

bush -> RE: Corsair question (1/13/2017 8:00:53 PM)

Does the next generation START with drop tanks?

btd64 -> RE: Corsair question (1/13/2017 8:10:52 PM)

Yes, plus it's CV capable....GP

AND the F4U-1A can drop 1000lb bombs (without drop tanks though)

bradfordkay -> RE: Corsair question (1/18/2017 3:31:40 AM)

Does the F4F-4 get drop tanks at the same time? I just started September '42 and it has been years since I was at this point of the war.

F4F-3/4 get drop tanks 10/42. TBF-1 get them 11/43. SBD's get them on the -5 model

bradfordkay -> RE: Corsair question (1/18/2017 4:17:10 PM)

Thanks, Pops!

F4U can carry both 1000 pound bomb and 175 gal drop tank at the same time in the game. 500 pound bomb with tank at extended range. All American second generation fighters have this capability.

Yes, but in Scenario 2, I'm in May 44 and the F4U-1 won't carry ANY ordinance, and F4U-1A won't carry ordinance WITH drop tanks.

The F4U-1a initially had no hard points, but they were fitted with one shackle late in the production run. The planes in the field were updated with a bomb rack made by Brewster.

The F4U-1d had three hard points and the late models had rocket rails too.

The F6F-3 and F6F-5 had a similar difference. The -3 had one hard point and the -5 had three. In the last year of the war the F6F-5 became a strike aircraft. It was the longest range bomber the USN had on their carriers.

It may be the scenario. Playing DaBabes and TheF4U1A does carry both in 11/43. I don't think the F4U -1 ever has the capacity but it does get drop tanks at 10/43. I played a full campaign of scenario 2 but it was a while ago and I can't recall.

bush -> RE: Corsair question (1/20/2017 1:15:48 PM)

As Corsair squadrons came on board the CVs weren't they specifically termed fighter-bombers? Was the F6F-5 longer ranged?

They split the VF squadrons for administrative reasons. It was getting too difficult to manage a giant squadron. In practice the VF and VBF squadrons performed the exact same missions. Some carriers have Corsair VF squadrons and some had Hellcat VBF squadrons. If you look at the USN records for unit compositions for 1945 you will see most of the VFs were F6F, but there were a few VFs that were Corsairs, and about half the VBFs are equipped with F6Fs.

The range of the F6F-5 and F4u-1d were about the same if I recall.
