I kinda remember reading something about Distant Worlds and 4 gigs of Ram or more..

was there any merit or truth to some code you could type in DOS or add to the game exe to have distant worlds use more than 4 gigs of ram?

I have 16 Gigs of Ram, and i7 2.4 GHz quad core, with a Samsung 840 SSD and 2 gig Nvidia video card 755m..

still Distant Worlds seems a little bit buggy and slow.. Just wondering.

DW is very CPU heavy on larger maps once empires grow. That might be the problem

so are you saying a i7 quad core at 2.4 gigahertz isn't enough for a 1000mb 2d game?

well, I thought I had a good enough CPU. but maybe not..

The size of the game or whether it's 2d or 3d has nothing to do with how much cpu power it requires.
Just look at Dwarf Fortress: it is a 20MB game with ASCII graphics but it can rape your CPU.

The problem with DW, and many games still as it's difficult to program, is that it doesn't split the load evenly between multiple cores. This makes your CPU speed a big factor and the number of cores you have much less of one. And I think the reason that it is so CPU heavy is because its a real-time game that makes massive amounts of computations because of the vast numbers of ships, especially the private sector ships. You could try playing the game with fewer planets capable of colonization as that should make for smaller fleets of ships.

well if I follow that logic, I think the solution for me is to get an Intel "single core" high-end processor..

do they even make single-core now-a-days?

Not necessarily. You can find a good multi core processor it just has to have good single core ability. The best one I found is 300 CAD though :P

No need for a single core CPU as there is nothing about a multi-core that holds you back here and it still helps by allowing your PC to run processes other than DW on other cores. Its just that for this game a higher clock speed is desirable since the game itself doesn't utilize multiple cores very much.

And you wouldn't need a top of the line Intel CPU to run the game well. I'm using an Intel 5820K CPU and it's current top speed is only 3.30 GHz and I only get a bit of slowdown on huge galaxies late game.

Another option might be overclocking your CPU as long as you know how and have good cooling.

So I say again then, my 4th generation i7 4200mq 2.4 ghz Intel quad core seems to struggle a little with it..

Late game and fights especially Shaktur

I have an i5 4670k oc to 4.3 and it smashes everything I toss at it except a huge 1400 star galaxy filled with empires and hundreds of colonized worlds where it starts to lag badly at the end game or even outright crash. This is simply a limitation of the game engine and hopefully dw2 will have better cpu and memory size support. Remember this game was first developed when dual core cpu and 4 gigs was common and quad cores rare with memory allocation over 3.5 gigs still not around.

Pretty sure that ~3½g limit was for 32bit operating system, programs (executables) were/are limited to 2gig if you don't enable LAA (and that has been available at least since XP64 released so from 2005 so they where around when original DW was released). Can't remember was that enabled by default for original DW, but at least Shadows expansion and DW:U both have that already enabled by default (tho to get full benefit of LAA you need to have either 64bit windows or modify windows setting if running with 32bit window with 4gig+ RAM).

Intel Core i7-6700K or Intel Core i7-7700K version is more than enough for most

I need the best custom Laptop PC.. probably only 15 inches.. fastest cpu I can get for laptop though.. with no bells and whistles.. just fast ram, fast cpu, fast SSD... what else is there? (besides motherboard Bus speed..)

I'm running Windows 8.. 64bit



but when I get a new laptop it will be forced into Win10 anyway..

Reason I asked is because I figured out Win 10 defaults to a single processor. I recently had to do a complete re-format, so I loaded 10 from scratch (always the better option). ALL of my games on 8 ran like crud, causing me great annoyance and displeasure, until I figured it out and set it to run on all 8. Ah well, I'll go back to my corner now.

ok well I have windows 8 now, but where and how do I check to see if all my cores are working for a game? the task manager?

or is there something to type in command prompt to set it etc?

I do not believe this game uses multiple cores, but if you have multiple cores the game should mostly "get its own" at least, and not compete with the other tasks as much.

Open the task manager (for instance by right clicking the task bar). In the performance tab you should see a cpu utilization graph for each core in the system.

If the game is struggling, and you only see load on one core (at all), it could be a sign that something is off.

That being said, I have never heard of the "single core only" issue before this.

If you look at those performance graphs in any game that stresses the CPU, you ought to quite easily see if the game is single threaded (uses only one core) or not.

My game runs alright.. I just want to have 300 ship size fleets late-game and fight the shaktur with smooth graphics framerate that's all....

this is my cpu while running the game.. but i'm not that late-game yet..

things to try on a laptop

run it off mains

add more ram

alter power settings to run at max (high performance and turn off all power saving modes) screen savers, and monitors that switch off at a given point / time)

disable all startup items, so a clean boot while playing, kind of like a clean profile maybe just for gaming, where everything that's not needed is disabled or not run on every boot etc, so free's more resources for the game etc.

max sure hdd is defragged, not needed with a SDD

All I have anymore are 10's, so I can't look at 8. What I found on Microsft...

"Open System Configuration (in Win7 it was called MSConfig) and click on the Boot tab then click on Advanced options. Check the box for Number of Processors and below it select the number of virtual processors on your motherboard. By default Windows uses just one processer during bootup. This will direct it to use all of them."

There are other articles as well. Apparently Microsoft OS defaults to the 1st processor. So you can have a super ship PC (I do now, I was upgrading like mad trying to get stuff to run! [:D] ), and still have things run like crud unless you tweak it. There are also Intel accelerators, but they can get difficult to work properly.

The world changed a bit in Windows 10...

Right click the (main) graph and select "Change graph to logical processors" to see each of the multiple cores.

Lot of good info guys. My computer has always run well with DW's and WITPAE, but I think some adjustments to speed up my machine is a good idea. However I can't find my MS Config file. Is it found in the Control Panel?....GP

In older systems in the Run box just type msconfig, the GUI will pop up. It's hidden in System Configuration in 10.

It doesn't matter how godlike your computer is, the game is 32 bit and single thread by default. That's your limit and there is no way around that unless you want to make a whole name game designed for computers that were built in this century.
