Looks like M&M Enterprises had successful sales of captured war material. There are British helmets and Bren guns in the pictures too! [:D]

Several western nations had enclaves in Shanghai before the war and it would not have been unusual for them to have a stock of military uniforms and light weapons there. I think they could have been looted by the Chinese before the Japanese got to them or the pictures may have been post-war when all war surplus would have been for sale cheap.

Germany was actually quite friendly with the Kuomintang before the war and supplied them with many things (including those helmets). Read about that in Tuchman's book on Stilwell.

I've also seen period newspapers/magazines misidentify photos of Nationalist Chinese soldiers as being Japanese. Apparently photo editors assumed Asians wearing German style equipment had to be serving on the side of the Nazis, therefore they were Japanese.

Great website, BTW. Its a new one to me and I'm a fan of WW2 photos.

Chinese had some german-trained divisions, maybe they got german equipment too.

Hello,

That would be a Czech ZB vz 26 light machine gun, chambered for the 7.92 x 57mm Mauser cartridge, provided by the German economic and military development mission to China. From 1933 to 1937 (first under Hans von Seeckt, then Alex von Falkenhausen), the German Mission organized, equipped, and trained 8 divisions for Chiang’s National Revolutionary Army. 12 more were in the pipeline, organized and partially trained, but equipped with a mix of German and other Chinese acquired weapons, when the 2nd Japanese War erupted.
