That's really something.

I hope it never prompts comparisons to Polish cavalry versus German tanks.

There's probably quite a few ww2 ships still floating around in active foreign service - Adm Belgrano (ex Phoenix) comes to mind though it was sunk during Falklands

You have to look really close. I had my magnifying glass out to check out the wonderful tail end and beautiful lines and I aimed it wrong and was wondering what all the chrome was about. I pulled the glass back and saw a chrome wheel marring a wonderful picture.

Which was only 35 years or so ago [;)]

I believe almost all WWII ships have been retired by now.

Mexico had ARM Manuel Azueta, ex Edsall class DE-250 USS Hurst in commission until last year.

ARM Netzahualcóyotl, ex Gearing class DD-863 USS Steinaker has been decommissioned in 2014.

ARM Manzanillo ex LST-602 has been decommissioned in 2011.

The Philippine Navy probably still has some ex PCE and minesweepers in active service, as well as BRP Rajah Humabon ex Cannon class DE-169 USS Atherton.

Maybe some auxiliaries remain as well.

Oldest ship still in service seems to be the Russian submarine salvage vessel Kommuna - commissioned in 1915.

Not exactly WW2, but laid down in 1939

the last gun cruiser and last ship with armor

JohnDillworth -> RE: USS Cutlass SS-478 Still in service! (1/25/2017 10:34:45 PM)

No, there is a t least one WWII ship still in service. In fact, I am on her a couple of times a year when I am headed to New England. LST-510 is a cross sound ferry between Long Island and Connecticut. This one saw some action....June 6th, 1944 Omaha Beach

I know she's just a cruiser, but she's kinda cute. Do you have her phone number?

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: USS Cutlass SS-478 Still in service! (1/25/2017 11:11:54 PM)

Classic strategy. Put extra weight in the rear to make faster cornering and traction. Helps the driver maintain his momentum and direction. [sm=innocent0009.gif]

The Wikipedia article said the tubes were sealed before being sold to Taiwan. Without functional torpedo tubes, what is her combat capacity?

Clearly YOU have let YOUR subscription to "Low Rider" magazine lapse if this is a surprising layout for you.

It says that they were sealed, but the article clearly states she's on a near-warfare footing. My guess is-after the sale to 'look right'-the tubes were unsealed and made functional again.

kaleun -> RE: USS Cutlass SS-478 Still in service! (1/26/2017 3:02:46 AM)

Taipei times said that they tried to reactivate the tubes but it didn't work so it is a training vessel now.

USS Constitution, launched in 1797 is listed as active duty.

Correct. She's a great ship. I've been aboard her 4 or 5 times. If you visit, take the tour. It's worth every penny....GP

A few years back she was going to sail {towed probably} through the harbor. I won a place on her and was so stoked. But life happened and China told us to come get a little girl that needed a family. I couldn't leave my little girl on her first 4th of July.

wdolson -> RE: USS Cutlass SS-478 Still in service! (1/28/2017 7:12:23 AM)

The USN has started using the Constitution as a training ship. Candidates for top level chief have to do a class on her where they learn how to sail her. The idea is these chiefs will be training up the next generation of sailors and they give them an opportunity to learn all new skills so they remember it when they start teaching.

If weather permits they sail her around Boston Harbor as part of graduation.

Bill

rockmedic109 -> RE: USS Cutlass SS-478 Still in service! (1/28/2017 3:08:54 PM)

They had a drawing for a place on her for the trip around the harbor. I learned about the drawing form this forum. I put my name in and forgot about till I got a letter informing me that I had a place. A missed opportunity. Visiting Old Ironsides is still on my bucket list. If the family ever gets anywhere near Boston, we'll go.

rustysi -> RE: USS Cutlass SS-478 Still in service! (1/31/2017 9:04:12 PM)

Was on her many years ago while stationed up at Ft. Devens.
